J.T....wow...that was amazing! Your Dad would be so proud. I remember when you were little and you used to straddle Brownie and pretend you were playing it....never doubted you wouldn't.
LOVE YOUR PLAYING...my wife plays bass and the first time she saw this she was blown away so i told her I would look for something on youtube so she could learn...i couldn't have gottten a better hit.......i loved your dad ..awesome player..we all miss him...
This is one very nice comment, thanks so much for writing! I appreciate all kind words on me, and my father or grandfather's playing. If you guys ever want to see anything specific song wise for a learning purpose or anything feel free to post a request on here or leave me a message!
While Bluegrass audiences seem to like that style of bass playing, other Bluegrass musicians seem to NOT like it. As a Bluegrass bassist myself, I can take it or leave it, but I believe it is best used sparingly.
Very nice playing , you said you use supernil nylon strings? Are they all nylon or just the D and the G string? The reason I ask is because that is how mine are, which is great but the E and the A is steel and I find it harder to slap.
. . . great job on a great sounding bass. I listen a lot to your father and grand father, they were outstanding upright bass players . Once I met Roy Jr. in the Station Inn, Nashville, what a great nice guy ! ! !
well, to each their own...id rather think you can slap a bass to any style music if you put your mind to it wether be rock, blues, bluegrass, hip hop, pop, anything...even a waltz, which is very aggravating to most people ha ha ha...
It doesn't matter of putting someones mind to it, I didn't say you couldn't slap to Bluegrass. I said slap is not Bluegrass Style. Your a very good slap bass player, but when you slap to Bluegrass, It's no longer Bluegrass, it's like adding drums to Bluegrass. I't doesn't fit in the style you slap. Once its added now the music is no longer Bluegrass. Like the music they call today country. It's not country its pop.
AS you said to each their own. I find this very irritating and would rather hear a quiet snare, and cymbal. This makes me nervous and it is sloppy and has no quality of a clean bluegrass bass .Noise y
But you are extremely talented. Just not bluegrass, the pure stuff.
hello loved the song and the sound of the bass what kind of stings are you using ? i just started playing upright bass and just ordered weedwackers rad red to put on have heard a lot of good things about them. if i don`t like them think i`ll go to gut strings on my romanian bass awesome job
Hey nightmagic, in this video I was using some old gut strings that were on the bass for about 13 years, but since they're so exensive I couldnt afford to get a new set of them, and I looked around for a while and Found That Labella Supernil Nylon Strings work really really well, and are very cost effective, around $75 for a full set, and they last between 6-12 months for me, and i play around 20-30 show hours a week, so check em out sometime, theyre really worth a try!
Thanks much for the kind words, I'll be putting up some new videos at the end of the summer, a couple of which I will explain on how to do a few techniques I know... They're not formal training techniques, but they work for my own personal style. See ya again soon!
Hey JT! That bass really sounds great . If it could talk and share some stories,oh boy! And u sure look like your father-a lot. Thanks and take care...
What a freakin coincidence. I stumble across this link for some pointers and see Skyline Drive being played by Don Reno. I was there when this album was cut. My father was playing fiddle on this. Don had great bass players from John Palmer, Ed Ferris and even his son played quite a bit. Great form. Like to see you try Lady of Spain. Don and John Palmer did this Banjo/Bass only. I think I will stick to my guitar and mandolin.
Hey J.T. I tried to find the music you are playing to. It looks like "Skyline Drive" is a pretty common phrase on Google! Please let us know what CD this is on... Thanks MUCH, James.
Thanks for posting this FINE example of slap Bass! You got me fully engaged in the music and I will probably watch this clip MANY times. Great Job...from another upright Bass player

@condemned72 Theyre nickel plated E and A strings, with nylon cores.
Theyre not too bad with the thickness of them, and stretch well with the pulling of tone.
