  • This is a great video

  • This video is clearly fake. The guys on the scooters always look back at the incoming traffic before starting, which scooter riders in Taiwan NEVER do. I live in Taipei and speak out of experience. Also, Bin Lang girls are not particularly easy. Girls you meet in some (not all) bars that cater mostly to foreigners are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay easier than Bing Lang girls (who are, after all, at their workplace doing their job).

  • This clip has brought back so many happy memories.

  • I'm no expert but I think there is more respect for women in Taiwan because most are raised by dominant mothers. The fact that there is controversy over girls wearing provocative clothing selling beetle nuts shows how far away they are from strip clubs on every corner. Good for them.

  • LO LAT

  • taiwan people put " Ho " on the end of santence....?

  • is this any different from vietnamese coffee shop here in the US? LOL

  • @YGGD4eva: Ur mum?

  • All Taiwan girls are pretty, not just betel nut girls.

  • 我一直奇怪,为什么不卖香烟或者口香糖

  • shy cas 831.

  • Scantily clad women sell betelnut....Big deal.

In Japan, you got some crazy shittttt

In the USA, everyone in LA is related/or knows a pornstar.

  • @georgehenryhsu everyone??? I think that's a overstatement...

  • @polychronio only a slight overstatement. what i mean is, in asia this is fairly explicit but if it was in the west, it wouldn't even be mentioned

  • wow the professor dude has good English

ANYWAYS, I'm a Taiwanese American and I will say that most betelnut girls in taiwan don't really want to do that job but are forced to because their family doesn't have much money.

  • @guitarhamster102 - Yes Professor Bien Chiang was Visiting Professor of Ethnography at (I think) UCLA , and before that he also lived in the US for some periods.

Re your "most betelnut girls" comment - what do you base that assertion on?

  • @YGGD4eva

Only the poor ugly ones are.

  • Dont eat them!!!!!! But they are almost like drug!

  • those things are disgusting, ppl just spit on the road when is done chewing and leaves a red bloodish mark

  • Is this finished yet? I am interested in watching this.. haha

  • Cute drive through.

  • Wow very excited to see this!!!! super interesting.

  • They ban beetlenuts from Taipei and Gaoshong to hide it from tourists.

  • @demonatemu thats not true, on the mainstreets u can see them always in the late evening

  • I feel bad for the girls

  • dislike the taste

  • what are betelnut girls? what do they do? I don't understand this video. whats a betelnut?

  • @tinfoilandy: google is your friend: Just try to search for "Betelnut Girls Taiwan"

  • @tinfoilandy so retarded. watch the video. if u dunt unds. u fail.

  • @tinfoilandy It... was like... right there... The girls work for the little beetlenut roadside shops (beetlenut is like chewing tobacco) and look pretty and just sell the product.

  • @tinfoilandy is a kind of nuts that is like a tabacco have exciting recipes and he betelnus girls is FOR captare the costumers attencion using girls wearing seexy clothes.

  • Comment removed

  • @tinfoilandy it` s like gum . it`s typical product in Taiwan

  • @tinfoilandy i don't understand it as well. but betel nut is what we call nga nga in the philippines. it's what ancients used to chew that stains the teeth to either black or red, & it also strengthens the teeth. now only old people in rural areas use it. they also had this in taiwan (aborgines), japan, & the pacific islands. not sure about the rest of se asia. why do you need girls in skimpy clothes selling betel nut? & why would people still use it, it tastes horrible actually

  • @tinfoilandy They sell betelnuts . Betelnut is a distant cousin to the coconut fruit . It tastes a bit bitter and you eat it with what we Malaysians call it the "Sireh" leaves . We Malays in Malaysia , especially the older generation still serve betel nut and the Sireh leaves to anyone that comes to our house as a way to welcome them

  • @gicole 1. what are u implying by 'girls like this'? 2. u can by red bull from girls like these -->bzorch.ca/pics/Red%20Bull/redbullgirls3.jpg

  • LLOVE TAIWAN ! GOOD FOOD GOOD DRINK GOOD LOOKS !

  • "The prices for the betelnuts must be costly if they can make good money."

it costs NT$50.00* per box or US$1.61.

the box will contain, depending on the season, 6 ~ 20 betel nuts. Most habitual chewers go through 2 or 3 boxes per day.

"NT" = New Taiwan Dollar, the current exchange rate is around 31: 1 with the US$.

    I like bing-lung, it's a nice buzz.

They say that being a regular chewing betel nut (Bing-lung) increases your chances of mouth cancer by ten times, more so with smokers.

  • I want my own betelnut girl......

  • 醫生.......

  • Sure a not just selling betelnut can earn lots of money...?!?!?

  • Note that there was vigorous demand for this "nasty shit" hundreds of years before it started getting sold by pretty young girls - or old binlang aunties.

  • its a dirty buisness betel nut is....especially using girls to sell some nasty shit.

and its not always girls selling betel nut--it could be a guy or a old woman

  • The prices for the betelnuts must be costly if they can make good money.

  • i don't know about betenut, but girls are nice!

  • "The bad part is that people in Taiwan have a bad impression and think betelnut girls are 'easy'"

-Really? What on earth would give them that impression? Dressed like that waiting for cars to drive up to exchange money and a few words? I don't see how anyone could get the wrong impression... :P

  • The whole time I thought they were using these girls to dress sexy and sell drugs...haha i

  • beautiful video!

  • Ok, I watched the whole video and still have absolutely no idea what this is. Drugs? Sex? Rock and roll?

  • @ekovv It's about the marketing of the betelnut industry in Taiwan. The concept of the "betel girls"...

Betel nut is hardly a drug, more of a mildly addictive stimulant. It's not that bad, provided you don't over do it, cause it'll mess up the colour of your teeth.. Other than that one shoud have fresh betel nuts, if it has/had a fungus on, it can give oral cancer...

I feel bit sorry for the girls, they should at least let them dress a lil more appropriately.. :\

  • 在中国大陆好像没有摈榔西施 ? 但有人间天堂,

  • @cwa7984 檳榔在台灣對喜好的人來說就像是嚼口香糖一樣....不過吃檳榔是會導致癌症的...

  • I wondered what those girls standing in front of shops were all about !

  • Great job, Tobie. I'm looking forward to seeing the full documentary!

  • Comment removed

  • Yes, yes, now I remember. If I was in Taiwan long time ago, the people were chewing it almost all the time. Always love Taiwan.

  • i live in taiwan... and some betelnut girls... let you touch their breast for as cheap as 100 NT dollars or 3 USD.... ITS TRUE... i have done it myself :p and some even let you have sex for around 2000 NT dollars.... i have also seen semi naked from top in Taoyuan Northern part of Taiwan...

    P.S ---> i dont eat betelnut !

  • LMAO If you're going to dress like that selling stimulates, you are obviously going to get sexually harassed. It's all part of the job.

  • I'm not really sure how much money they make, but it is probably better than the 'minimum wage' there. These stands are everywhere and from what I have seen, most transactions are just that. The girls just come out and hand the betelnuts to the customers who remain in their vehicles or on their mopeds. By the way, they also sell cigarettes and drinks.

  • nice video

  • What is the music?

  • Poor betelnut girls get harrassed :( must be worse than a life of prostitution.

  • Absolutly not worse than prostitution...sorry, respectfully say to you, maybe you're too conservative...or maybe i haven't gotten very well, but they aren't offering sex, or yes?...anyway, if I got it well, my opinoin is you should travel more...I must clarify that I am not supporting this kind of thing, just giving my opinion...thanks!

  • sounds like tiwann version of chewing tobacco(nasty shit!

  • How sad ! Seems like this guy is very proud of this industry. Is Taiwanese women carrying the national pride by wearing less ? Is that the only thing Taiwan can offer and attract foreigners ?

  • wow someone seems kinda ignorant. guess where the computer came from that you used to write this poor comment.

  • Comment removed

  • Oh shush. I think its a good job to have... Easy money, no stress, no responsibility...

  • I don't think this is meant to be a "national pride". If this were the case, then wouldn't the same conclusion be reached about USA since Vegas is "Sin City"? Sex sells, unfortunately, people in Taiwan are not immune to this concept.

  • Not sure if you follow news from Taiwan, there are brochure about traveling in Taiwan. One of the highlight must see is to visit the Betelnut Girls. The news is in the past two weeks.

Even in Vegas, you don't see girls bare most of their skin next to the sidewalks trying to sell a merchandise.

  • @userkc

True, but they do have people handing out postcard/pocket sized ads of strip shows and even escort services ;)

Travel Guides in Toronto for example has advertizement about Church St. and Annaul Gay Pride.

My point is there are people who sell these type of things as "highlights" but they do not represent the opinion of the nation.

  • Dude what Vegas do you go to? You see hookers everywhere, even magazines and business cards strewn about the streets. These girls are dress like Go-Go dancers, and making WAY more. Go-Go dancers make a hundred bucks IF THEY ARE LUCKY. I have booked them so don't think I'm making that up. And these girls are prob making $100+ with a bout 7X exchange rate I don't see why everyone is making this out to be such a negative thing.

  • WTH ius a betel nut anyway??? type of yuky coffee??

  • @trx1961 its some kind of cancer causing nuts ppl put into their mouth to chew like gumThe difference is eater spit them out instead of swallowing them.

  • LOL i go to taiwan every year to visit relo's and every single time i drive by i always peek to see if there pretty(no homo) xD LOL and if there betel nut stand is nice lol, iuno lmao must be a girl thing >.>

  • Taiwan for the win!

  • I visited Taiwan a few summers ago and I saw the Betel Nut stands. When I asked my relatives about it they were all talked about it as if it was this highly immortal thing. I don't see why it's so bad other than it's sort of like drugs but it could be a coffee stand for all it's worth. So what if there are girls in skimpy outfits? They're not nude and they're not really doing any sexual favors. Are the Taiwanese just that prude?

  • i'm a taiwanese. away from the Taipei city, many betel nut stands in order to compete to each other and sell more betel nuts, sometimes those girls have to show their tits or let the costumers grab their breats. in the midle of Taiwan they even dress themselve half naked. and u can have sex deals with them in some of the betel nut stand( they do it in the room in front of the stand.)OMG....and u kno wat? most of us taiwanese feel shame about it. i dun kno why we developed this culture.....

  • nothing goes well together but oral cancer and aids.

  • I agree with jc914michaelj ! Those women don't have well education and have not other employment skill, they are lazy to do some hard working job, they just want some easier money and work slightly. Shame on those slut bxxxx!

  • @jc914michaelj why i d=never get such infomation from TVBS asia....ROC legalized prostitution?

  • but ppl will keep buying and selling it...here r many grandmas n grandpas who have nothing but a betel nut field. they worked hard their whole life planting the betel nut but not actually earn alot of money...

on the other hand ppl who do heavy works like driving truck or building houses, they've addicted to the betel nuts. some ppl got cancer becuz eat too much betel nuts. sigh...

  • @MrXentrix

I'm a Taiwanese.Althought Betel Beauty brought some problem to the society. But I think it's only a way they live.

  • @MrXentrix There are not many IMMORTAL things we humans can do, so why not. ;-)

  • good stuff, they look hot in their skimpy out-fits

  • I was born in Taiwan.Betenut is pretty much like chewing tobacco except you spit out red

  • What's the name of the documentary?

  • I visited my aunt and uncle in Taiwan last summer. While I was there, I went to the movie theater with some of the locals. In the lobby, there was a sign that said 'No Betelnut Chewing in the theater.' I had no idea what it meant until now.

  • That girl looks so cold!

  • this is so fucked up from my perspective of course.

  • You can find similar girls for sex, yes. But probably not these particular girls. Why do you ask stupid questions you already know the answer to? Trying to sound funny? Instead say "I wanna fuck those betelnut sluts." and you'll better get your point across.

  • No,they are selling betelnut, not sex, your brain is so dirty.

  • Maybe them can?

  • where can i watch this full movie???

  • no they can't

  • No, they are selling betelnut, not sex.

  • @Bignosetw they may as well as b selling sex, would u want ur mother doin what their doin?!

  • I was looking for betel nut info and came into this. An Indian programmer shared some of it with me a few years back. It is kind of like bits of wood or coffee beans. It came in a tin. Sort of like a couple of cups of coffee as far as stimulation goes. The girls that perform the sort of services you guys want work in Taiwanese "barber shops" a coworker who lived there told me. Also U.S. guys go there to "teach English" to girls. They put ads in papers offering English language lessons.

  • when you go online, and find stuff to respond to and then write stuff, ...have a point.

  • they should be Sympathy

  • why subtitling people who have a proper english ? O.O

  • well because their pronunciation is not always clear, and many people watch YouTube videos with the sound low ...

  • because they speak like my grandpa.

  • I remember how on my first trip to Taiwan I kept seeing those girls in the booths along the highways and had no clue what they were selling.

  • Betelnut girls are like im considering like people who work at walmart, not very high in education but will pay.

  • 38......

  • ha ha, 38. yeah

  • I really miss Taiwan. Some of the people I've met there are the best friends I've ever had, the food is fantastic, and the place always feels alive. I always wish the best to the people of Taiwan. They're a great culture. I hope they maintain their path and don't adopt the Western culture here in the US.

  • Too late in many respects about adopting "Western" (media) culture, but Taiwan fortunately still has a charming culture of its own.

  • @jtomasik you right

  • @jtomasik - sigh...me too....

  • @jtomasik What's wrong with Western culture or American culture?

  • Over 600 000 views :)

  • gross nut.. chew it like tabacco.. really icky.. makes ur teeth yellow and gross.. only reason ppl buy is cuz of the girls luring and they get addicted to it

  • I have never tried chewing tobacco but I have tried betel. I think the people that seem to be getting cancer from Betel chew are really getting it from the tobacco they mix into it. The betel I order online doesn't have any notable effect so it is harmless but a waste of money.

  • In taiwan, it is not customary to mix tobacco. And no, the Areca nut is very high in carcinogenic copper. If you're not getting an effect from the stuff you buy it's either gone stale, or you are not preparing it properly. It needs lime or similar as a catalyst.

  • u dont get sex or anything. they dress like that to attract customers.

  • I don't think "selling sex" is any worse than selling any other service so these crackdowns are very anti-libertarian and sexist.

  • That's not entirely true. I know people from this business and I know second handedly that in some betel stands in certain areas through special "procedure", sexual bargains are still available. It's just not openly commercialized or advertised due to legal and cultural reasons. As I understand, it is both immpossible and unnatural to completely outlaw or boycott the sex related business in most urban cultures. These betel stand have sometimes become a convenient medium.

  • this is actuality world...

someone have to do it as a job...

  • betelnut girls aint gonna do it with u, the clothes they wereis to promotethe product, theycant just stop working for 5mins to suck ur cock there always working and get payed quite decnet compared to other jobs, it is becasue the industry is so comptitive that they have resorted to this kinda of selling technique the main consumers of betelnut are truck drivers and odler males therfore the girl is ther to attract them to ur store.

oh yeah and it gives u cancer i just buy for the girl lol

  • Allright maybe one evening and we will see. Too bad you don't live in Hsinchu, it would be easier to do it if you live here :).

  • I don't think my wife would like that idea. 4 years ago I would say Let's go.

  • My point is actually that you woun't get very lucky, so your wife has nothing to fear :)

  • You can come to Taiwan with your wife, welcome!

  • I believe the number of girls willing to do "extra" are high, actually looking from the way they dress up I say 60% if not 70% of them look like prostitutes, only few of them dress decently. They won't do it in that small box, There are many cheap hotels and motels available in Taiwan. I have seen many fancy cars stopped by these beetle nut booths and who knows what they were chatting about.

Maybe iam just too old fashioned.

  • Yes, maybe. You are welcome to come with me one evening, we can take a drive around and stop at random booths and ask, and see how lucky you get?

  • thats true

  • Someone told me that these betle nut girls can earn moreless NT 40.000,- a month maybe much more if they are willing to do "extra" with the customers. And the government had set a new rule for the gurls to put on their bra's with them because in the past some of them had been selling the nuts topless.Damn !

  • Yes, although the number of girls willing to 'do "extra"' with the customers is quite low... and there's not much place to do it on a lit street in a glass box.

  • hmmm? by watching this clip, i wonder if all of the vietnamese woman who got sold into taiwan might work in some of these bars.

  • Ok firstly these are not "bars" - they are booths by the roadside. And no - mthe vast majority of the girls are Taiwanese. But yes, I have met one betelnut-girl who was a Vietnamese child-bride. She's lived here with her husband and two kids for about 7 years, he's a taxi driver and she runs the stall - and she's very happy with her life here.

  • they sell betelnuts which are sort of like the cherries of a certain kind of palm tree in that part of asia. the betelnuts are chewed as a stimulant. a bit like chewing tobacco i guess. truck drivers are frequent consumers of betelnut. when i first went to taiwan i saw red stains on some streets which are the result of spitting out the betelnut after chewing. they dress like that as a marketing gimmick, as betelnut users are mostly male.

  • Excuse my ignorance, but what they sell? o what kind of service is that?

  • Where can I buy this documentary?

  • It's not finished, goofball. I need funding. So if you give me about NT$500 000 and a broadcast contract, I'll finish it just for you :)

  • oh, I'm so sorry! I heard that someone had seen it and I assumed it was done and out on the market. Well, shoot! Good luck on it. I teach film and could really use it in my classes.

  • interesting

  • I tried this Betel Nut once and it was actually a pleasant, mildly stimulating experience. It is fun to make the little pouches and mix the lime and nut. I would order more on he internet but I'm sure the quality is less than a fresh one.

  • I wish some wealthy producer would provide the funding so you could complete this project before the phenomena disappears.

  • Thanks blue, yes, it would be great to finish this thing properly...

  • I'm a taiwanese actually...this thing is pertty bad in taiwan i don't like but have a lot taiwanese guys like it,cuz they can see some girls wear so sexy...but i think this is our culture be peculiar to in taiwan. And i don't eat Betel Nut cuz i still want to have my owe Healthy.

  • Taiwan is an interesting place. And It seems to be changing very fast. Seems like North America's 1950's, 60's, 70's......2010's all rolled to one. Therefore the seemingly sexist behavior. I meet all kinds of characters daily. Many of my of my Taiwan friends are Psycho (they call themeselves that). I agree.Term of endearment. Self-deprictaing humour is common here.

  • People won't like to hear this, but the Taiwanese culture is unique in that the women in that country are viewed, by all Taiwanese, as objects of pleasure for men.

This can actually be quite shocking for foreigners (especially westerners) to learn, who are used to women being independent and self-assured.

  • in your statement "all Taiwanese view women as objects of pleasure for men" certainly not all because 5 of my Taiwanese friends in my room right now disagree.

women can bring men pleasure, we agree, but they are not objects.

and in Taiwan, although it's hard to make a living, it's still their choice. yes because by doing this kind of jobs they have more income.

  • You asked some Taiwanese about this? They're the last people to ask because they have no reference. Everyone who grows up in their own country naturally thinks that what happens there is normal.

A foreigner however, can easily compare the Taiwanese culture with their own, and will discover lots of differences...

  • ...One of these differences is that the Taiwanese people are very quiet, shy, docile and subservient. They easily follow orders. In a marriage, the woman acts as a slave, to serve the man. This is the norm in Taiwan.

The so-called "Betelnut culture" is simply derived from this attitude, where girls are formed into pretty window-dressing toys to please the men.

  • You sort of brought this on yourself by making such definitive statement with word such as "all" without any credible source(s).

  • "the Taiwanese culture is unique in that the women in that country are viewed, by all Taiwanese, as objects of pleasure for men". Wow. That's quite a statement. How many Taiwanese have you actually met? Three? If you honestly believe they ALL think so, then this says more for the company you keep than for the people of Taiwan.

  • Having said that, I also reckon that the fact that SOME men (Newsflash: Including Westerners), think so of women is hardly "unique"... so I'm afraid I can't agree with ANY part of your first statement.

  • You then go on to say, "Taiwanese people are very quiet, shy, docile and subservient. "

My friend, all I can say is, you REALLY need to get out more. I'll introduce you to some of my Taiwanese friends (including women) who don't fit ANY of those labels. I think it's time you stop generalizing, stop looking at this place through your distorted Western eyes. You obviously don't have a clue, and broadcasting that fact for all the world to see isn't very smart either.

  • You can see this happening at any trade show where 3-4 models dressed in miniskirts, bras and heavy makeup entertain the large ogling crowd of men while promoting computer chips.

All I'm doing is explaining rationally WHY the betel-nut culture exists, but unfortunately it seems that people here, like I said in the beginning, don't want to hear this.

  • hooters?

    w/e makes money

  • Caucasoid men exploiting Asian women ? We all agree that prostitution is the obvious example here. Clients in any one country come from the local populace. However in parts of Asia Caucasoids are also integral to the problem. Consideration should be given to the opposite - why aren't there hordes of Asian sex-pest tourists in say London. Answer: maybe the cost of a long-haul flight! My message to "Asian" Londoners: never put up with Caucasoid cows who maintain double standards.

  • It is obvious a white man living in Taiwan posted this video. It is not enough white men have exploited women from Asia for the past few centuries, now they have to continue by sharing their fetish online. White man only see Asian women as objects. Western media have conditioned American and European men to think the way they do. Sick.

  • Did you even bother watching it before you went on your rant? Its a clip of a DOCUMENTARY on the Betelnut culture in Taiwan.

  • Yes I am a white man living in Taiwan, but watch the trailer to my film again, with a little attention this time. Totally missing the point is one thing, but then broadcasting that fact to the whole world is beyond stupid. Almost as bad as having a lame name like "CIAisgreat". The time when that may have been true is long gone.

  • Welcome to Taiwan. Here is a free country. Don't blame on these girls, whose purpose is to make money but not selling sex.

  • korean here.

why do girls in taiwan where those sexy outfit, when they r u just selling betelnuts.

    i dont get it -_-"

  • Why do people complain so much, at least they are working. Ads use revealing outfits to sell products too. At least these girls are not prostitutes, I hope...

  • I know a lot of people in Taiwan bag these girls, including my wife who is Taiwanese.

However, they do add a bit of colour and character to the place especially with those lurid lime green and pink fluoro tubes. They are no more badly dressed than girls I see everyday in Australia.

They are also a good source of information if you need directions when lost.

    And they are employed.

And lets not forget this is only a small part of Taiwan.

  • no offense to the girls, but from many taiwanese that i know, they are not really considered high class, or respected. a taiwanese friend of mine told me that they are akin to the provocative women that you might find here in America, in the trailer parks. Usually less intelligent, and not very well off. Many of my taiwanese friends, even men, say that this business should not represent taiwan as a whole, just an important subculture.

  • For sure it is a subculture and not representative of Taiwanese society as a whole. I never suggested it was. However, I would say that your friend's easy labelling of a broad group of people as "not really high-class" is perhaps more telling of prevailing attitudes in Taiwan. :)

  • My message has always been that among betelnut girls I have found some that I guess could fit that "trailer trash" label, but I have also met many who do not fit that mold, who are perhaps studying to improve themselves, who are aware of the moral ambiguities of what they do, and who are very adamant about where their boundaries are.
