Started at Red Bridge and Hiked up north up the NCT side (west side of river); crossed over at the foot bridge near the dam; and hiked south on the MRT side (east side of river). Parking and primitive facilities near the trail-head at both Red Bridge (southern end) and Seaton Creak Campground (northern end). Google North Country Trail and Grand Traverse Hiking Club; Lots of great places to hike near Traverse City.
easy to follow. NCT office in Lowell has a great trail map. The trail is well marked and a well traveled path visible 99% of the time. Only risk is wandering off on side trails to the river if you miss the blue blazes on the trees.
North Country Trail office in Lowell, Michigan (east of Grand Rapids); can web order also. Great maps of the NCT through Michigan. Ask for the specific map for the loop MRT loop. Lots of detail (water, elevation, camping). Also, check out "Backpacking in Michigan" by Jim DuFresne. Just got back from 3 days canoeing the Manistee with my boys, it did not disappoint! Enjoy!
Thanks. 1st time I took my 11 yr old (15-20 lbs pack) we did approx: Fri 2mi; Sat 17 mi; Sun 5mi. I let him set the pace and rest whenever he wanted; he did great. 2nd trip my 8 yr old came also (about 10lbs pack). second day was very difficult for him even with 10ish miles. we stopped for a nap at lunch. Funny, but its really nice to talk a nap in the middle of the day on a high bluff above the Manistee! Good Luck!
was just up there earlier today. near T.C. never thought to go hiking like that. sounds fun, where did you start and where did you finish?
