I respect both Peter and Christopher equally. Both either hold or held ideas I didn't agree with. As an atheist, I don't automatically find someone obnoxious because they're a Christian. I found Christopher's championing of the 'war on terror' obnoxious and believe his Christian brother's objection to the war on terror noble. I find the atheist/theist debate is becoming intolerable with extremists in both camps increasingly entrenched. This hardline attitude is coming from the 'secular' US.
@outofthegreenmist He didn't find Peter obnoxious because he is a Christian. He doesn't find him obnoxious at all, or at least he never says he does. He finds his values obnoxious. Quoting the video: "I found — and still find — Peter Hitchens's views obnoxious. One of many repugnant strands has been his consistent championing of special privileges for some christians to act out their prejudices in professional and official forums, on the grounds of religious freedom."
I first listened to Christopher Hitchens speak here, on YouTube, a little less than 2 weeks after his life came to an end. Quickly, I took in all of the Hitchslaps, many of his debates and interviews, and many tributes to him. I felt like I had simultaneously found, and lost, a kindred spirit, a brother. Hitchens was erudition and wit in the service of true, humane concern; he exposed BS everywhere, exhibiting huge tits. As Mowgli would have mourned Baloo, so I mourn Christopher Hitchens

@calmreason There's an entertaining debate between the brothers to be found right here on youtube ("Hithens vs. Hitchens"). They're both eloquent, funny and smart. I'll leave it to you to form an opinion on Peter.
A masterpiece of a tribute video. Now I am thankfull I had the completely reverse experience. I only found out about Peter few seconds ago. That really sets some new perspectives. Indeed Hitchens is irreplaceable.
I never write to people I admire. I dislike the subservient feeling of being one of thousands who suck up to an individual in the vain hope of acknowledgment even if said individual does deserve it. It says something, then, that I had intended to write Hitch and thank him for inspiring me and others to have the courage of conviction even when that conviction is at odds with the majority. And then, suddenly, it was too late.... :(
Hard to call someone a humanitarian who writes articles like "In Defense of Endless War." I'm having trouble posting for some reason with the link but try googling it.
His views on the "war on terror" were foul. It needs to be said. He wouldn't pull any punches and neither should we.
Love the thumbs up against pete, bias no less Jesus is the way of our future...to swear on the bible is the truth, truth be blessed Amen, peace to you amen.... Love god and he will give you an eternal life.
I guess i'm lucky, my brother and his girlfriend are both atheist like me (tho i'm a bit anti-theist as well). My mom, who is catholic, doesn't let that change the fact that she loves us and she is happy for our independent thought. Christopher Hitchens helped me to "see the light" if you will.
This is a great tribute, Theramin. To a true humanitarian: sharing with us what we need to know, not necessarily what we desire to hear. The commodity of truth is a currency not exchanged everywhere, but to some it is golden. And Hitchens paid more than his fair share to the human race.
@DorakoftheHillPeople "there is no afterlife after death", "binge drinking and ciggys are good for you", "fuck all people that hold a religious belief they are nutjobs".. " I have no respect for others with a belief on god" shall I go on ?
@PETE4REALITY You sir, are an idiot. Your ignorance is appalling. Atheism is not a belief, it is a LACK OF BELIEF in a god or gods. I suppose you sir, as well, are an atheist, I just go one god further than you. When you understand why you dismiss all other gods(IE Zeus, Apollo, Hades, Allah(even though he is the same fucking god as the christians), etc...) then you will understand why I dismiss yours.
@TheProphetless Atheism IS a belief system. That doesn't mean I basket it into the "nasty bucket", segmenting ideas, thoughts and beliefs helps us to cut through and clarify the essence what your looking at, providing us with incontrovertible truth. The unknown is what appears to keep mans very existence in good order. It appears he needs a belief in something more than just nothing, so to stop him chain smoking to avoid the cancer.
@PETE4REALITY "Atheism IS a belief system." - PETE4REALITY
We assign the 'atheist' moniker to those with a position contrary to the specified beliefs of others. The position is a negative argument, not a positive philosophy. What could possibly be said, with any certainty, regarding the beliefs held by an 'atheist'?
@PETE4REALITY "It appears he needs a belief in something more than just nothing, so to stop him chain smoking to avoid the cancer."
It's evident from your messages here that the way you arrive at conclusions is flawed. What you wrote above is ridiculous. You now seem to be obsessed with Christoper chain smoking! WTF?
@LAnonHubbard I'm not concerned with the "claims" religion makes, it's obvious they are designed by man, it's the unknown of the afterlife and the meaning of life that intrigues me, what keeps humans going is the unknown, having some sort of faith prevents them from chain smoking like Christopher.
Hitchens was against tyrannical regimes of all types, this is why he supported the removal of Saddam Hussein. However from what I have seen he disagreed with the general foreign policy of the Bush administration as well as the general handling of the Iraq and Afghanistan theaters.
@PETE4REALITY Evolution does not say the egg preceded the chicken - I'd recommend reading some of Prof Dawkins books on the subject. Agnosticism essentially means 'not knowing' but there is no excuse for not knowing when the knowledge is freely available.
As for eternal life... well, nothing lasts for ever, not even the stars. I'd take quality over quantity any day.
Atheism, although a balanced belief system for the living, gives no real hope to people that want "eternal life", interesting subject but true, this is why I reverted back to agnostic, it makes sense to me. After all how did we get here in the first place?, what came first, the chicken or the egg?, evolution will say egg...As the old saying goes, theres NO atheists on a perishing aircraft... Back to the drawing board for me and maybe you? Big smiles from down under...
That's a hook that religion uses to reel people in. There's no evidence one can survive death, so to want it and believe in it is unrealistic. Perhaps even childish, and egotistical?
"NO atheists on a perishing aircraft"
Isn't that just a silly saying not based on evidence? I've been in perilous situations before (crashing motorbike) and didn't once think of God.
@LAnonHubbard "childish, and egotistical?", I don't think so, how do you know what happens after death?, you don't... your not dead yet, what if you come back? what makes you? do you have a soul? is there any such thing? interesting thought, Ill never say the earth is 6000 years old, that's stupidity, but what if? ... I mean wouldn't you like to think your coming back? Kerry Packer, once said after being dead once, "ive been to other side & there's fuckin nothin there!", boring to me..
@LAnonHubbard "NO atheists on a perishing aircraft", in your final seconds, Id put money on it you would say it, if you want to try ill make a bet with you.
@PETE4REALITY ""NO atheists on a perishing aircraft", in your final seconds, Id put money on it you would say it, if you want to try ill make a bet with you."
@PETE4REALITY I went to Iraq and got shot at everyday, not once did I even think about this God character. The argument that there are no atheists in foxholes isnt an argument against atheists, its an argument against foxholes. You seem to have an issue with smokers and atheists, and you say we hate others?
@PETE4REALITY Atheism, at least the way I subscribe to it, doesn't give hope for eternal life. However, I see it as the truth. What is true, what is real, has no obligation to give anyone anything. It can be ugly, scary, hopeless, beautiful, fascinating, or even boring. The point is I can accept it for what it is.
@PETE4REALITY Atheism is not a "belief system" just as "not fishing" isn't a hobby. The ONLY thing all atheists have in common is a lack of belief in god(s). As for the old "no atheists in fox holes" nonsense, good luck trying to get that one to stick...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@TheProphetless shut the fuck up, I've heard this argument a zillion times, if atheists wa a lack of belief, atheists wouldn't constantly attack everyone who has different opinion from theirs
and do you know that atheists hate asll religious people and only respect their own belief?
@gogolplex74 Some atheists will argue against views that are different from their own, some theists will do the same. You have no point, you're just being confrontational for the sake of it.
"atheists hate asll religious people and only respect their own belief"
All atheists do this? Do theists never do this? Have you any evidence and/or real point to make? Or are you just trying to pick a fight?
@gogolplex74 Perhaps if you knew why us atheists attacked religions you would be less ignorant and hateful with your comments. We believe religion is a disease. It causes war, hate, slavery, etc... Now that you are slightly more informed, please run back to your corner and shut up with the ignorant comments.
@gogolplex74 Oh, and atheism isnt a belief. Its a LACK OF BELIEF in a deity(s). So to say atheism is a belief is to say clear is a color, being healthy is a disease, and not collecting stamps is a hobby.
@gogolplex74 You make three wrong assertions: 1] Atheism isn't the absence of a belief in god(s) and 2] Atheists constantly attack all non-atheists and 3] Atheists hate all religious people. The first one is simply factually and empirically untrue and the next two have zero evidence to support the outrageous claims. For example, they don't apply to me [an atheist] so that's gotta count for something, right?
@TheProphetless lol... yeah... and actually one might argue that there are only atheists in fox holes -- if you were a truly believing theist you would either be celebrating that you are nearer to heaven or simply believe that the all mighty-god will save you and not be fearful.
@TheProphetless I'm slightly confused. If Atheism is not a belief system, can it still be seen as a "religious view" or "religious belief"? I think the three terms mean the same thing. Atheism to me isn't a religion, but a religious belief/view.
@ohwellwhateverr Atheism is not a belief, but a lack of a belief in a theistic God.
It asserts nothing more, in itself, though many atheists do make assertions regarding WHY they lack a such a belief. Assertions may appeal to an understanding of physical processes in the light of scientific evidence, to ethical objections regarding specific theist formulations, or to other arguments.
Being ideologically pro a lack of belief in a theistic God, might be called atheismism.
No, agnosticism is the admitted absence of knowledge. There isn't such a position as "lack of belief" because nobody believes nothing at all.
Atheism is just one of two mutually exclusive and exhaustive positions with regard to the belief in the existence of a god, specifically the one of not believing. Everyone is either an atheist or a theist, although one may not know which they are.
Not necessarily. An agnostic can either be 1) Someone who isn't sure whether a god exists, or 2) Someone who believes that you can't ever possibly KNOW whether or not a God exists.
Not exactly. I'm saying that everyone either believes there is a god or doesn't believe there is a god, meaning that everyone is either a theist or an atheist. Someone may not know what they believe or don't believe on the subject but that's not not knowing "which one better suits them" because it either suits you or it doesn't at all. Those who don't know what they believe must necessarily be agnostic but they'd still be either an atheist or a theist.
I know it would be a lie, but I wish that cigarette was not part of the picture. Although, it is better to learn and understand why, then to wish it to be any other way.
Please people, understand Christopher may have been with us much longer if the cigarette was not a part of his life, and it can be said he himself did not want to regret life's choices, but he did, we will, and we should understand and learn from this, I hope.
@Fastlan3 I absolutely want it to be well known that Hitchens' early death was related to cigarette smoking. I applaud the inclusion of the cigarette. Only stupid people will assume the cigarette was somehow partially responsible for his intelligence, as opposed to existing in spite of it. So if stupid people take up smoking because of it, that's a bonus because it culls the herd. And if smart people stop smoking because of the harsh reality of his death, then bonus the other way.
It is more of an unconscious meme, rather than a purposely driven idea that one would think themselves to be or seem more intelligent for acting like those whom people believe to be intelligent.
My original comment fully acknowledges it was a WISH(meaningless) in the light of extending Hitchens life and others. We both clearly accept the inclusion of the cigarette, and I hope that those who cared about the man, will think twice about there choice to continue smoking.
@6musky He was only rude, arrogant and nasty to rude arrogant nasty people. He was always polite, humble and kind to people treated him as such.
That makes him an honest person not a bad one. Tit for tat, be rude be treated rude, be arrogant get treated as if you are beneath your opponent, be nasty get nasty back.
But I've seen excruciating videos where people are trying to be courteous and respectful to him and he's just sneering at them and calling them stupid, 'unlettered' etc, like a pompous supercilious arse.
@zippythewildone Good points. I'm always searching for these videos and comments where Hitchen's verbally assaults people for no reason. I can't find one because they simply don't exist. Those people who bore the brunt of a full on Hitchen's assault put themselves squarely in Hitchen's sights by their actions and offensive ideas, not by the mere fact that they were theists.
@gogolplex74 What precisely did you hope to accomplish by writing this comment? I have provided you with no reason to believe I am a "moron" unless you consider anyone who defends Hitchens to be a "moron." But even if this is the case you must know that a comment which only consists of a an insult would never convince me that I am a
"moron" or that Hitchens-defenders are "morons." So your comment was written with only one intention in mind: insult.
@6musky Arrogant is a word sorely abused by lesser intellects. Some people actually are smarter than the rest, and the display of their intellectual prowess is dismissed as arrogance. This is merely a defence mechanism. "You've hurt my feelings so I don't have to respond". In other words "It's not ragging if you can do it". Hitchen's and Dawkins and Harris routinely demolish the very basis of strident theist philosophy, and since the theists have no response, they whine about arrogance.
Actually, I talk of arrogance because Hitchens is a supercilious, boorish vulgarian who snarls at and sneers at and abuses those who disagree with him. I am an atheist, but I can't stand bad manners. Not when the other person is trying to be courteous, anyway, as frequently happened with Hitchens, and he just sneers at their 'unlettered' speech and tells them they're stupid, if a company director behaved like this you'd say he was a shit, why is it different?
This was so well done. I think what I loved best is that he never took any conversation or debate too seriously; you noted that well. I can't say he taught me too much except that anything humorless is probably the wrong side.
The quota that Christians bring forth to take on Realists in a epistemological and metaphysical fashion, by pulling the "commen sence" fallacy. What can be asserted without evidence, can be decarted without evidence". In theistic logic, empiricists can never entartain the notion of Realism, by their own standards of evidence, other then appealing to common sence.
My reply is usually this: "When you grew up as a christian, was this - the methaphysical structure, what made you a theist?"
Wonderful! Humble and astonishing! I wish videos like these could have been shown to the Hitch before his passing. Our appreciation for his persona and the sobering warmth to be cast upon future generations to be enlightened by his legacy. One of your best videos.
Hitchens one said on his disdain for afterlife that why would he want to meet Shakespeare in heaven when i can meet him in him works today? Well Christopher, we meet you now and wel meet you everyday, in your works.
In my short life, I don't think I've ever been more bummed out by the death of someone I've never met as much I have by that of Christopher Hitchens.
everybody dies, religious or not, theist or not. Don't be disrespectful of our tributes. Btw, a very cool and beautiful one, theramin. hope you can find more time to awe us with your pieces of art.
To me he was always like the fictional character Dr. Gregory House, undoubtedly very skilled in what he did, but essentially a prick you'd rather watch from a distance. By his own admission, he loved to argue, and vehemently so. I never enjoyed witnessing that in debates.
@GregQzag I'm talking about the style of debating, about tactfulness. Hitchens justified his occasional lack thereof through the target (person/idea) of his criticism. Some might call this being "passionate", but to me it often made him the least appealing character in discussion panels. The term "Hitchslapped" might hint at the mindset of his fan club, and why they like his style.
@HiAdrian Exactly the point! Hitchens was never there to entertain a pleasant discussion. And he never offered false reverence to people and their stupid opinions and beliefs when clearly they neither had earned it or deserved it. The term Hitchslapped is not a mind set. it is a way of using a one or more succinct or terse statements to shred an opponents stupid position. Like, yours.
@GregQzag Hence my comparison to Dr. House. If someone's opinion is considered stupid, ignorant etc., it justifies throwing cultural norms of conversation out of the window. I cannot and would not wish to separate reason from conduct in this way. Sam Harris can be quite critical of others' ideas without trampling on the feelings, and so can TheraminTrees for that matter.
I think we've established in what way we disagree; in the end, to each his own.
@HiAdrian And again, you are wrong. He just didn't "consider" someone's opinion to be stupid. But would go on to demonstrate and explain just exactly Why what they had expressed was stupid, in no uncertain terms. For example One of Christopher's Greatest quotes is "That which can be asserted without evidence, can be dismissed without evidence" You probability consider this to be rude.
You can't separate reason from conduct. While he could never give respect to fairy tales.
While I love his quotable quotes and his debates, I always found it strange that his political views were hand in hand with the neo-cons, while decrying them.
I certainly wish he hadn't brought his speaking abilities to support and give a pretense of intellectualism to the war monger cause. His were the most touted of arguments for going to war in Iraq, and the rest of the middle east.
He certainly is a gentleman, but I am not so obsessed with atheism to base my opinion of someone on that one item.
I agree with his brother on the Iraq War. Chistopher argued poorly using emotion and exaggeration for the Iraq War, specifically claiming America will look back at the decision to invade Iraq as "it's smartest choice in the century" or something close.
You can find the debate in youtube. Hitchens vs Hitchens, I believe.
That is a twisted way to look at things. I don't look at Stalin and say, besides the genocide, he did build a lot more public roads and hospitals in Russia.
The point is, we don't need to prop up someone just because they were right on one subject. He was a great orator, no doubt. He just didn't strike me as extremely unique or a thinker outside the box.
He was an atheist. Yes, but atheism doesn't really need a defender, just like we don't need defenders of heliocentrism.
And to be pushing the war propaganda is not an "outside the box" or brilliant way of thinking by any means.
America is bankrupt, and over 50% of the US budget is military spending. Our bankruptcy and disruption of the economy has sent a ripple, causing world economic problems felt everywhere.
As far as I can tell, Hitchens was too arrogant and blind to see the eminent results of spreading wars to every middle eastern country.
My Stalin comment my have jumped the shark a bit, but just trying to may it apparent why we don't blindly make heroes out of people for one good thing they accomplish or speak out against, while ignoring all the bad.
A more relevant comparison (since we are talking about atheism) is holding up a priest for all his humanitarianism and "saving of souls" while blatantly ignoring his buggering of little boys.
@brendanmcwilliams ""He was a great orator, no doubt. He just didn't strike me as extremely unique or a thinker outside the box."" And this is where your side of the conversation ends. This comment is so fractally f**ked, that I can't even begin to imagine the limitations your mind must have to even think of uttering it. I can only imagine that the level of your thought capability is so far below mine, that it would require brain damage for me to understand you.
@oliethefolie@amaroclaro@Hyperplaterine --- Incorrect. Hitchens was not very well intelligent, and his arguments were not sound. Just like his banging the drums for war in Iraq year after year, arm in arm with the fundamentalist Christians, on Rupert Murdoch's right wing propaganda machine, Fox News, and he never once admitted that Iraq did not have WMD's and was not a serious threat to the USA, and had nothing to do with 9/11
Hey folks, I am an atheist too but please stop sucking Hitchens' genitals. He got what was expected, a lung cancer due to smoking and booze. As a conscientious atheist I have to maximize my chances and don't lead a reckless life like Hitch because it's the only life I'll ever get.
@RegelNeue Trying to extend your lifespan by a few inconsequential years at the cost of a leisurely activity you enjoy greatly is hardly what I would call 'maximizing your chances'. I'd rather enjoy my time, you know. Hitchens' enjoyed his time greatly, and we enjoyed knowing we exist in the same generation as him. So you can just kinda stfu.
That was a great piece of writing, Theramin. As someone who has followed Hitchens for almost a decade, and has read countless tributes and obituaries for the man, yours ranks up there near the top. If you haven't already seen it, Hitch's defense of free speech is probably my favorite of his speeches, and I recommend it highly. Cheers.

This is a great tribute, Theramin. To a true humanitarian: sharing with us what we need to know, not necessarily what we desire to hear. The commodity of truth is a currency not exchanged everywhere, but to some it is golden. And Hitchens paid more than his fair share to the human race.

@PETE4REALITY "Atheism IS a belief system." - PETE4REALITY
We assign the 'atheist' moniker to those with a position contrary to the specified beliefs of others. The position is a negative argument, not a positive philosophy. What could possibly be said, with any certainty, regarding the beliefs held by an 'atheist'?

LAnonHubbard 1 month ago
@LAnonHubbard I'm not concerned with the "claims" religion makes, it's obvious they are designed by man, it's the unknown of the afterlife and the meaning of life that intrigues me, what keeps humans going is the unknown, having some sort of faith prevents them from chain smoking like Christopher.

WolfriksWorld 2 months ago
@WolfriksWorld Well the chicken came from an egg. The egg came from something that wasn't quite a chicken yet. That's how evolution answers it.
GrieverBJB 2 months ago
@GrieverBJB agree.
PETE4REALITY 2 months ago
Atheism, although a balanced belief system for the living, gives no real hope to people that want "eternal life", interesting subject but true, this is why I reverted back to agnostic, it makes sense to me. After all how did we get here in the first place?, what came first, the chicken or the egg?, evolution will say egg...As the old saying goes, theres NO atheists on a perishing aircraft... Back to the drawing board for me and maybe you? Big smiles from down under...
PETE4REALITY 2 months ago
@PETE4REALITY "to people that want "eternal life""
That's a hook that religion uses to reel people in.
LAnonHubbard 2 months ago 2
@LAnonHubbard "childish, and egotistical?", I don't think so, how do you know what happens after death?, you don't... your not dead yet, what if you come back? what makes you? do you have a soul? is there any such thing? interesting thought, Ill never say the earth is 6000 years old, that's stupidity, but what if? ... I mean wouldn't you like to think your coming back? Kerry Packer, once said after being dead once, "ive been to other side & there's fuckin nothin there!", boring to me..
PETE4REALITY 2 months ago
@PETE4REALITY "I don't think so, how do you know what happens after death?, you don't"
Exactly! So the religious people should not make claims to know about this!
LAnonHubbard 2 months ago
@PETE4REALITY
"...how do you know what happens after death?"
Happens to what exactly?
Your body and brain? It is known exactly what happens to those.
"what makes you?"
All evidence suggests your brain's function makes you.
And damage to the brain changes you.
"I mean wouldn't you like to think your coming back?"
Wishes don't make it so.
Personally I would prefer a harsh reality to a pleasing fantasy any day.

What's your point?
"As the old saying goes, theres NO atheists on a perishing aircraft..."
That isn't true, and even if it were it would have nothing to do with whether atheism is correct or not.
VannahWilson 2 months ago 2
@PETE4REALITY Atheism, at least the way I subscribe to it, doesn't give hope for eternal life. However, I see it as the truth. What is true, what is real, has no obligation to give anyone anything. It can be ugly, scary, hopeless, beautiful, fascinating, or even boring. The point is I can accept it for what it is.
GrieverBJB 2 months ago 3
@PETE4REALITY Atheism is not a "belief system" just as "not fishing" isn't a hobby. The ONLY thing all atheists have in common is a lack of belief in god(s). As for the old "no atheists in fox holes" nonsense, good luck trying to get that one to stick...

@TheProphetless shut the fuck up, I've heard this argument a zillion times, if atheists wa a lack of belief, atheists wouldn't constantly attack everyone who has different opinion from theirs
and do you know that atheists hate asll religious people and only respect their own belief?
gogolplex74 1 month ago
@gogolplex74 Some atheists will argue against views that are different from their own, some theists will do the same. You have no point, you're just being confrontational for the sake of it.
"atheists hate asll religious people and only respect their own belief"
All atheists do this? Do theists never do this? Have you any evidence and/or real point to make? Or are you just trying to pick a fight?
kevinscales 1 month ago
@gogolplex74 Perhaps if you knew why us atheists attacked religions you would be less ignorant and hateful with your comments. We believe religion is a disease. It causes war, hate, slavery, etc... Now that you are slightly more informed, please run back to your corner and shut up with the ignorant comments.
mvan4310 1 month ago 2
@gogolplex74 Oh, and atheism isnt a belief. Its a LACK OF BELIEF in a deity(s). So to say atheism is a belief is to say clear is a color, being healthy is a disease, and not collecting stamps is a hobby.
mvan4310 1 month ago 2
@gogolplex74 You make three wrong assertions: 1] Atheism isn't the absence of a belief in god(s) and 2] Atheists constantly attack all non-atheists and 3] Atheists hate all religious people. The first one is simply factually and empirically untrue and the next two have zero evidence to support the outrageous claims. For example, they don't apply to me [an atheist] so that's gotta count for something, right?
zerobeat18 1 month ago
@TheProphetless lol... yeah... and actually one might argue that there are only atheists in fox holes -- if you were a truly believing theist you would either be celebrating that you are nearer to heaven or simply believe that the all mighty-god will save you and not be fearful.
earthypig 3 weeks ago
@TheProphetless I'm slightly confused. If Atheism is not a belief system, can it still be seen as a "religious view" or "religious belief"? I think the three terms mean the same thing. Atheism to me isn't a religion, but a religious belief/view.
ohwellwhateverr 3 weeks ago in playlist Uploaded videos
@ohwellwhateverr Atheism is not a belief, but a lack of a belief in a theistic God.
It asserts nothing more, in itself, though many atheists do make assertions regarding WHY they lack a such a belief. Assertions may appeal to an understanding of physical processes in the light of scientific evidence, to ethical objections regarding specific theist formulations, or to other arguments.
Being ideologically pro a lack of belief in a theistic God, might be called atheismism.
Inannalu 3 weeks ago
@Inannalu Thanks for clearing that up. So Atheism isn't a belief, but a lack thereof. And Agnosticism is a complete lack of belief.
ohwellwhateverr 3 weeks ago
@ohwellwhateverr
Quintinohthree 3 weeks ago
@Quintinohthree So everyone is either an atheist or a theist, and those who have not decided which one better suits them are agnostic.
ohwellwhateverr 2 weeks ago
@ohwellwhateverr
Not necessarily. An agnostic can either be 1) Someone who isn't sure whether a god exists, or 2) Someone who believes that you can't ever possibly KNOW whether or not a God exists.
Beandude202 2 weeks ago
@ohwellwhateverr
Quintinohthree 2 weeks ago
I know it would be a lie, but I wish that cigarette was not part of the picture. Although, it is better to learn and understand why, then to wish it to be any other way.
Please people, understand Christopher may have been with us much longer if the cigarette was not a part of his life, and it can be said he himself did not want to regret life's choices, but he did, we will, and we should understand and learn from this, I hope.
Fastlan3 2 months ago
@Fastlan3 I absolutely want it to be well known that Hitchens' early death was related to cigarette smoking. I applaud the inclusion of the cigarette. Only stupid people will assume the cigarette was somehow partially responsible for his intelligence, as opposed to existing in spite of it. So if stupid people take up smoking because of it, that's a bonus because it culls the herd. And if smart people stop smoking because of the harsh reality of his death, then bonus the other way.
zerobeat18 1 month ago
@zerobeat18

@gogolplex74 What precisely did you hope to accomplish by writing this comment? But even if this is the case you must know that a comment which only consists of a an insult would never convince me that I am a

That, my friend, makes you a troll.
zippythewildone 1 month ago
@6musky Arrogant is a word sorely abused by lesser intellects. Some people actually are smarter than the rest, and the display of their intellectual prowess is dismissed as arrogance. This is merely a defence mechanism. "You've hurt my feelings so I don't have to respond". In other words "It's not ragging if you can do it". Hitchen's and Dawkins and Harris routinely demolish the very basis of strident theist philosophy, and since the theists have no response, they whine about arrogance.
DeaconShadow 2 months ago
@DeaconShadow

To me he was always like the fictional character Dr. Gregory House, undoubtedly very skilled in what he did, but essentially a prick you'd rather watch from a distance. By his own admission, he loved to argue, and vehemently so. I never enjoyed witnessing that in debates.
HiAdrian 2 months ago
@HiAdrian You never enjoyed witnessing an argument in a debate? I can imagine you have absolutely no clue how stupid this sounds.
GregQzag 2 months ago
@GregQzag I'm talking about the style of debating, about tactfulness. Hitchens justified his occasional lack thereof through the target (person/idea) of his criticism. Some might call this being "passionate", but to me it often made him the least appealing character in discussion panels. The term "Hitchslapped" might hint at the mindset of his fan club, and why they like his style.
HiAdrian 2 months ago
@HiAdrian Exactly the point! Hitchens was never there to entertain a pleasant discussion. And he never offered false reverence to people and their stupid opinions and beliefs when clearly they neither had earned it or deserved it. The term Hitchslapped is not a mind set. it is a way of using a one or more succinct or terse statements to shred an opponents stupid position. Like, yours.
GregQzag 2 months ago
@GregQzag Hence my comparison to Dr. House. If someone's opinion is considered stupid, ignorant etc., it justifies throwing cultural norms of conversation out of the window. I cannot and would not wish to separate reason from conduct in this way. Sam Harris can be quite critical of others' ideas without trampling on the feelings, and so can TheraminTrees for that matter.
I think we've established in what way we disagree; in the end, to each his own.
HiAdrian 2 months ago
@HiAdrian And again, you are wrong. He just didn't "consider" someone's opinion to be stupid. But would go on to demonstrate and explain just exactly Why what they had expressed was stupid, in no uncertain terms. For example One of Christopher's Greatest quotes is "That which can be asserted without evidence, can be dismissed without evidence" You probability consider this to be rude.
You can't separate reason from conduct. While he could never give respect to fairy tales.
GregQzag 2 months ago

6musky 2 months ago
While I love his quotable quotes and his debates, I always found it strange that his political views were hand in hand with the neo-cons, while decrying them.
I certainly wish he hadn't brought his speaking abilities to support and give a pretense of intellectualism to the war monger cause. His were the most touted of arguments for going to war in Iraq, and the rest of the middle east.
brendanmcwilliams 2 months ago
He certainly is a gentleman, but I am not so obsessed with atheism to base my opinion of someone on that one item.
I agree with his brother on the Iraq War. Chistopher argued poorly using emotion and exaggeration for the Iraq War, specifically claiming America will look back at the decision to invade Iraq as "it's smartest choice in the century" or something close.
You can find the debate in youtube. Hitchens vs Hitchens, I believe.
brendanmcwilliams 2 months ago
@brendanmcwilliams So his incorrect stance on the war is more important to you than the massive gift he was to atheism. Good for you, have a cookie.
Rytzch 2 months ago
@Rytzch
Yes, but atheism doesn't really need a defender, just like we don't need defenders of heliocentrism.
brendanmcwilliams 2 months ago
@Rytzch
