  • "Laws are no longer made by a rational process of public discussion; they are made by a process of blackmail and intimidation, and they are executed in the same manner. The typical lawmaker of today is a man wholly devoid of principle — a mere counter in a grotesque and knavish game. If the right pressure could be applied to him, he would be cheerfully in favor of polygamy, astrology or cannibalism." ( H. L. Mencken - May 1930)

  • Even if the protesters are violating laws, it is absolutely illegal for the police to escalate to violence without a clear, credible threat to their safety or the safety of others.

Every officer who has pepper sprayed a non-violent protester posing no threat to the safety of another has committed assault and battery with a deadly weapon, a very serious offense and a felony, and they should be tried in a court of law. At the very least, they should be fired and have their pensions revoked.

  • Well to have an effective rally u need a lot of people. And thoose people need a place to stand/sit. So really wen i see this i think "wow so really as long as a small amount of uneffective people are trying the police and gov. Dont care. But wen we become a large number..thats wen its a problem wen there is a large number of ppl whp call for change"

  • The cop who sprayed people acted more like he was spraying weeds, with about as much apparent emotion.

For decades, "Administration" has replaced the original relationship between Students and Faculty, the actual EDUCATIONAL relationship, with their egregious self-importance. This Katehi woman epitomizes this perversion of university life.

  • Katehi has now entered into a realm of infamy where she joins such past lowlifes as George Wallace, Lester Maddox, and Bull Conner! Bullies never come out looking good in history!

  • I like how Louis is instantly game with doing guerrilla-journalism:D

  • Because of the abusive use of pepper spray at UC Davis, indiscriminate use of tear gas and flash grenades in Oakland and severe beatings with batons elsewhere, several friends have finally gotten off the fence and are supporting the OWS.

As the police become more aggressive, with the approval of city officials, and hate speach from politicians like Gingrich escalates, there will be a shooting. Remember Kent State.

The OWS must be doing something right, the whole word is watching.

  • UC Davis could learn a lot from it's cousin up there, Stanford University, where professor Philip Zimbardo conducted the now-famous Stanford Prison Experiment showing in horrific detail exactly how cops go bad. While famous in academic circles, this study is unknown in police circles, in which the use of new and more inhuman tactics supersedes any kind of understanding of the human psyche and how it can go bad when left unchecked.

  • Sorry Dave Louis has got this one right.

  • MidweekPolitics, keep up your good work! pressure these people!

  • : - ) She skerred.

  • Silence is golden.

  • David looks like a professional with dat hair.

  • There are rules governing use of force. As far as I know that wouldn't be acceptable anywhere in the US.

I'm glad the chief is taking the hit on this. It's obvious to me that this is a systemic problem, not a rogue actor.

  • you should try again and set up and interview with her. i think its possible to email her and tell her that you will treat her fairly as your other interview guest no matter what religion what they did etc.
