The Halulite material is an alloy and imho is better than Ti as it does a better job of transferring heat, so you get shorter boil times and need less fuel per/meal.
Do you have the new teflon lined one or the old halulite one. Does it make a difference. Being able to heat over open fire is deal breaker for me. I can make a lid.
The boil time isn't great but I added a home made wind screen and that seems to help a bit. I like the fact that the Raptor is stainless steel and feels very sturdy. Overall, I'm very happy with it as a stove. I have a video up with my windscreen on it if you'd like to take a look.
It's a good product. I used it on a backpacking trip in the Adirondack high peaks. There are some issues, the pot is really high so if you are cooking any food and not just boiling water it can be difficult to stir and the food can burn and stick to the pot when using a pocket rocket or other stove. Also the insulating band soaks up liquids and are hard to dry, it becomes nasty to drink out of after a couple of days. So I still carry my own mug .
I've looked at the set a few times, but am actually leaning more towards the Gourmet Backpacking Cook System which is of the same line. I may still get this yet for lighter camping trips.
As for the aluminum thing, it's from a Canadian study in the 1970s that basically said they found high concentrations of aluminum in Alzheimer's patients. Further studies have not been able to show this as a cause of the disease, but merely a symptom of it.
As it's the most abundant metal, and third most abundant substance on Earth behind oxygen and silicon, you actually ingest a lot more of it naturally in plants than you do from aluminum cans and cookware.
Hi Sean, I was wondering if you could make a video showing this system in use. I have a penny stove that I made for camping, and I wonder if this pan would be good for cooking over it. I basically just want to see how the system holds up to the amount of heat produced by outdoor type stoves. Thanks for the review.
Markesbery is recognized as a pre-eminent researcher of Alzheimers disease. His pioneering research discounted the once-popular theory that an accumulation of toxic metals such as aluminum play a role in the development of Alzheimers disease. Markesbery found that beta amyloid peptides promote neurodegeneration by inducing a free-oxygen radical process called lipid peroxidation in nerve cell membranes.
My husband and I have this cooking system and love it. We used it on our AT trip and will use it this year on our Everglades trip. This is a great system. We've just purchased a dehydrator and look forward to now going really ultra-light with our food. This is a great product and for the dude who keeps posting crap about aluminum and Alzheimer's - GET A LIFE!
Get a life? LOL, what ever, I have a life, enjoy your aluminum, go eat led paint chips... whatever I don't care, I was letting the people who give a shit about there health know. (NOT dumb asses like you)
Great product... i will be buying it soon, I would also like to comment that i called the company adn this alloy contains NO ALUMINUM! Don't listen to the moron talking about making things out of aluminum foil. (as if i even needed to tell you) LOL.
Hey... thats great if your into Alzheimer's , but me.. personally, I would like to remember my family friends and children... i don't even use deodorant that has aluminum oxide in it.. i use TOM'S with hops deodorant instead. The aluminum pans may be acceptable to the FDA, but there are studies that show otherwise... NEVER COOK WITH ALUMINUM!
That's nothing pal. ALL beer cans are lined with plastic that contains BPA AND other nylons that when heated release cancer causing particles. These particles are absorbed by the body and not released. When you point this out, forums like backpackinglite and alcohol-stove sellers and their troops/friends censor it! They encourage kids to cook in these beer cans. Would you line your kitchen pots with plastics?
Same with cooking in freezer bags, known as freezer bag cooking. These sites make money and they don't care about people in plastics since it hurts their profits as they sell these products and books.
They believe there is no continuity of consciousness after death so giving disease to peopel and kids for profit is not a problem to them. They are the ultimate victims. Sad.
Great review. Looked even better in person. The website showed that it was supposed to come with collapsible cutlery, but it looks like you got gyped. I'll give you an extra LMF Spork in super pimp yellow if you want!

Picked mine up at Bass Pro for $30. I really like this cooking system, I use a Brunton Raptor canister stove with it.

How is the Raptor, I've heard the boil time is kind of lacking.

Have you tested the anti-cooddy technology of the GSI dualist?
I hard rumors of Anti-Coody 2.0 coming out in 2009.
Gotta love the marketing in the western world, give it a name, hype it up and people will love it. =)
I just learned a Hemi engine is nothing more then a unreliable, gas guzzling V-8 engine. Boy do I feel foolish.

I have the GSIs.
Then I discovered Snow Peak titaniums.
Good part, it doesn't melt if I put it on a grill, hot coals, or in the camp fire.
It will also last 100 years.

Supposedly, this cookset is made from Halulite and is described as an alloy of some sort. There could be aluminum in it, but I don't know.
Seanwins 3 years ago
@freckles527 This theory has since been disproven, or is at least no longer believed to be a significant factor in alzheimers disease.

for open fire can make a round brimmed lid from (in order of soft-to-hard):
- alum foil
- heavy duty alum foil (Reynolds)
- baking pan
for a knob, can wire through a paperclip in the middle (wrap a thick thread around it if your fingertips are of the sissy variety)

Compared to plastics, an alum lid is nothing.
