When this song was out. They were my neighbors livin in Los Angeles right across the street from King Middle School on Bates Ave. I was in 8th grade. They is koo as dudes to kick it with frrl..
Do you think Black Eyed Peas watch their old videos on youtube from the 90s and say "Wow I forgot how dope I sounded on some real Hip Hop shit!" Ahhhh well I'm a fuckin millionaire....and I gotta feeling...that tonight's gonna be a good good niiiiiiight!
Seriously what happened? I remember seeing and hearing this in '97 or '98 and i thought it was a pretty cool song. And then came Where Is The Love... *barf*
You people are smoking some BAD crack. This is NOT a new song from BEP! The original version came out in the 90's, and like the song says "that; the joint, thats the jam
This is when black eyed peas were good.. Then fergie came along and turned everything to shit ! Fergie's hot though.. Thats the only good thing about them now haha
@JackWMS14 I wouldn't call them mainstream R&B. Wouldn't that make them similar to Usher and Trey Songz? I would just say they are straight pop music like Lady Gaga and Beyonce.
@JackWMS14 Eh from a commercial and ideological standpoint they may not be much different from the mainstream R&B on the radio, but they still really aren't R&B at all lyrically, musically and thematically speaking. Stylistically they are pop music fueled by an eclectic mix of mainly electronica, techno, alternative rock, and hip-hop. Despite this, they are still, as you said, shit.
Now that it looks like that pink-toe is about to step out dolo, I hope that they get away from that wack ass Pop shit and back to some real Hip Hop like this shit!
Man, they reminded me somewhat of The Pharcyde back then. Sadly, everything has fallen victim to the proverbial "machine" these days. Miss the good ole 90's.
@egorja My whole family revolves around music! So you can't say nothing until you actually know me!!!! And they had to change abit or else they would of died out. If they stuck to the samed routine, then they would get boring and no one would listen to them. They had to change so they can still stay on top and be around longer.
Well if any of you were one of the many who illegally downloaded their early albums on Napster I don't think you should really be allowed to btch about them selling out...
Even after this they remained good ! Fergie was not the blame cuz Elephunk and Monkey Business were also amazing but its this techno mainstream shit that they took up later and made them suck
...AND THEN THE WHITE MAN HAS ARRIVED ... WITH SUITCASE FULL OF MONEY AND WHITE GIRL NAMED FERGIE... THEY SIGNED AND THEN NOTHING WAS THE SAME ... : )
Dude I am black and it has nothing to do with race and all to do with money. Its as simple as they were not getting money being a underground rap group. They added a pop singer with commercial appeal and thats that.
@CZEZ187 I beg to differ. They didn't have to sell out.THEY sold out.It doesn't matter who influenced them.Just another black person blaming the WHITE man.Get a life.
Waaaaaaay better than "That's The Joint", the new version of this song. I seriously love all their music, but I can't listen to That's The Joint. I can't STAND it. This is so much better! <3
give them a rest. they've contributed to the hip hop community enuf. they've left, but they also left a dam good mark on the hip hop community and wat we listen to. BEP left an enormous influence on real hip hop and many bands have tried to replace them (must unsuccessful to replicate their prowess) but still. u gotta admit that BEP, although sellouts, have done some amazing shit for underground hip hop.
i seldomly use the term sell out but yeah if i had to describe the word to someone and had to use an example i'd have to go with black eyed peas for real. i mean these dudes used to be all about the underground hip hop ethic of "friends vs. endz." im sorry but changing format to be more pop sensible, and regardless of what you think... but also aiming for a specific target audience ie adding fergie to your group? c'mon who you kidding with that bep did not sell out mess?
Black Eyed Peas did NOT sell out. they still make dope music thats all bout peace love and partying. they've drifted away from their hip hop beginings but the music they put out is still unique and true to themselves. they arent just following mainstream trends. just because YOU dont like the new music doesnt mean they sold out
@kalpal67 i did. i bought 2 of their cds when they first came out in 98 and 2000 respectively, and had both of them ever since. not everyone's a casual fan, i know i'm not. i don't buy albums off mainstream popularily. i only buy them if they're at least good, and those 2 albums were great. i refused to buy elephunk when they brought in that annoying skank from a lame failed girl group and that shitty disney music show from 84. i don't blame the originals, i blame that bitch.
@RadDacey thats a great concept to have but it goes the other way as well! You can't not buy it just because it IS mainstream. Elephunk had some good cuts on there! Didn't like them all but i wouldn't say they sold out! Its just like even in the 90's era they were doing crossover songs like "request line" that sound just like the stuff they doin now. but nobody says anything about that because they only hate when you make it.
@thespursareadynasty I agree. I liked the music back then(even if I wasn't born when they first came out but my cousins introduced me to their music at an early age) and I think that they are still good. All of their songs old and new, you are able to dance to and of course there is always a song or two about peace and love and coming together. I have only 4 of their cds and still looking for the other 2 before Fergie.
Back in the day when these dudes had soul and there really were the jam... I miss the old group, feel like they have lost it over time:( still like them but it isent the same..
Holy shit! I'm not a big fan of Black Eyed Peas because I only knew about them when they had their Album Elephunk out in 2003, and Other than "Where is the Love" I didn't like that album at all. But damn son, this is off the hook! This is way better than their newer stuff. If only I knew about them back in 1998, I would've bought this album for sure. Stupid Fergie. "My Humps" is a shit song!!
now this is when the black eyed peas were outstanding, and this is coming from someone who's been a fan from the mid-90s until 2003. they had kim hill who was not only talented, but also had meaning.
@RadDacey then came fuck faced fergie, a then-uknown pop singer who ruined the black eyed peas. sure she has talent (sounds like an idol contestant), but her lyrics are fucking pointless. she tries so fucking hard to act like sweet innocent good girl. i know some of her stans on here are gonna defend her and say she was awesome in kids inc and wild orchid, but who the fuck knew about her then? not many, only the disney channel viewers did.
I miss this Black Eyed Peas and FERGIE MUST DIE!!!
@DizzyXD No a stan is a reference to The eminem song where the guy named Stan was obsessed with eminem. When someone is called a Stan it means their ready to defend that musician to the ends of the earth. The person is basically a ridiculously dedicated fan to the musician. Stan is used on some music forums to describe these kinds of people.
@mike12jrw1111113 Meh, I like mine better. Anyone who is willing to defend something to the bitter end without seeing both sides is a moron anyway. Or maybe I'm just too open minded.
wow. the black eyed peas sold out BIG TIME! this used to be one of my favorite songs, and now that theyve sold out, i dont even know if i can listen to it anymore. this was back when music was real, back in the 90's. im just amazed at how much theyve changed, and not in good way. people who love them now probaly have never heard this song and if they did hear it they would probaly say something like "this is back when they sucked" because people today dont know real music.

All fergie does is sell their records, flashing her ass! Black Eyed Peas Sold out big time. This was sooo soulful and real. Shame! Money changes things and now they have both cut their dreds. The Media pressured them to conform in order to make money!
@KoldMannDamm I'm glad I'm not the only one w/ this view. I remember when they first came out w/ this & I thought they were going to be the next Native Tongue type hip hop group. Wah wannnn.
@KoldMannDamm lol i only discovered the older stuff once fergie joined the peas - and have found a few songs that and fukay - this is one of them - <3 it
Remember back when Black Eyed Peas were good? Back when this song came out? Back before Fergie? Think of this song the next time you hear "Boom Boom Pow"
I just laughed hysterically, "WHY IS FERGIE BLACK!!!??" Cuz they used to have more soul... but like a jack in the box, they went POP, and forgot to listen to early KOol and the gAng, or Mandrill, or Fatback, to inspire and have socially educated content and music to their shit.... I believe that to be Kim Hill... who brought a good element to BEP
that girl may be replaced on fergie coz she dont sing much in the vid thats what will i am wants....fergie was always on monitor 1st on BEP...dmn itz all weird whos the part bep...=o
@misticbrew lol why u telling me this. tell this to black eyed peas. they stop making good hip hop music for commercial shit. shit that sells records.
This is the Black Eye Peas I know. I have this song on one of those Source various artists albums. Anyways, why did they get rid of that lady for Fergie? Unless Black Eye Peas didn't have a lady in a group. I love this song this is my joiint & jam.
They got money now like everyone esle ha just look at snoop busta jay-z compare their 1998 cds to their 2009 cds the only way you sayin their shit is hot now is if you just got one of their albums recently. Hell outkast some folks first cd was love below/speakerbox so its old fans vs new fans outkast always kept the music outkast never this is whats hot.
I just downloaded the Behind The Front album from the Amazon MP3 store after watching this.

Remember back when Black Eyed Peas were good? Back when this song came out? Back before Fergie? Think of this song the next time you hear "Boom Boom Pow"

Love this song, wish BEP could've stuck with this style. If you're looking for something similar, checkout Jurassic 5.

MrDoodyHead4Eva 1 year ago
I just laughed hysterically, "WHY IS FERGIE BLACK!!!??" Cuz they used to have more soul... but like a jack in the box, they went POP, and forgot to listen to early KOol and the gAng, or Mandrill, or Fatback, to inspire and have socially educated content and music to their shit.... I believe that to be Kim Hill... who brought a good element to BEP
