blaming the kid for this would be the easy but the question is where did he have/get his training or did he even have a cert proving right of operation
I ran a forklift on our farm in the 60s. Drove it when I was 10, loading sour cherries onto our semi. You couldnt start the forklift if you werent sitting on the seat. Not sure why this fella was trying to do what he did. Besides the legalities, 16 is old enough, depends on the person, and everybody needs to be properly trained first. Shit happens.
The kid OBVIOUSLY was NOT supposed to be operating the forklift, if he chose to move it, without training or certification, the results of that decision are on him. What in the world made him think that he should move it instead of getting a forklift driver to do it? Teenage arrogance, they think they can do anything and face no consequences. Who's at fault? The parents, for not teaching him that if you don't follow the rules, there ARE repercussions, in this case, serious bodily harm.
i did some temp work in construction and it required me to move those wood platform forklifts fit into to carry a bunch of 100lb bags of concrete or gravel. I wasnt educated on it at all. Luckily I didnt have the job that afternoon. I was planning to apply for a job like this and I had heard stories of how people dont get trained properly and terrible things happen, I decided to consult OSEA regulations myself from the internet. I DONT EVEN TURN THE KEY...UNTIL MY SEATBELT IS ON......WTF.....BLAME THEM?????REALLY.......THEY DID BREAK THE LAW...BUT DUDE I'VE NEVER SEEN ANY1 EVEN PUT 1 N GEAR AND STAND BY IT???
I work with forklifts and yes I have occasionally left it in gear. But with the hand brake on. Main worries about forklifts is tippling them over. These are dangerous machines and can cause death. Also I hate gassing them up. It's soo scary
"If they would have given me the proper training..." Really? Do you put your car in reverse and stand beside it just to do nothing but stare in awe at how fast its rolling down a hill? This wasn't an unsafe workplace. This was just stupid.
i understand the point of this video is to be a training tool but everything the guy did went against basic common sense. Common sense would tell you unless your in the operators seat using the equipment, the equipment should be in park or neutral with the parking brake set. Also if a forklift were to run away like it did, common sense would be to stay as far back from it, not chase it around. Not to be mean but this guy almost deserved to be ran over by his own forklift.
In Australia, you have to get a forklift license before you can use one, and you must also get a safety card before you can enter a work site. This ensures every body goes home safely to parents, spouses, and children. Of course, we still have a strong Union movement which didn't get raped by successive Presidents and Governors.
i was all over a fork lift, a hydraulic crane, an excavator, etc at 16... the difference is intelligence. sorry man that sucks but for real. be smart.
man you can t refuse when they tell you something or you loose youre job that s the fact of today s world and all the dunb ass bosses controlling younger people JOB means just over broke job titles are fake and i hate jobs now a days no respect or honour
Never EVER step out of your truck while it is on and in gear. If others are doing it and it looks unsafe, it probably is. They're getting complacent- DON'T follow their example.
Reguardless the corners you cut to get the job done. Iv'e been driving forklifts for over 1 year. I know that isnt much time to learn..but even i know how to get onto a moving forklift.. it isnt hard..one silly mistake made from panic cost him what happened
I dont know who made this video and I dont know what the guy filming was thinking but I think this story is fail and not true.
The reason for this is that forklift can not be moved or made to move by its own by only change gear. To actualy move/drive forklift left foot must constantly press the pedal which is safety kinda clutch. And other is gas pedal. If the safety pedal is not pressed the forklift will not move even tho you pressed gas pedal. So to move it you need to use bouth feet!!!!!!
so the wheels were turned and the forklift was spinning in circles, yet when he tripped he magically began going straight pinning him against the wall? o.o
Forklift training is very basic, but it does require training. They are very heavy and very dangerous. I see a lot of finger pointing. What possible reason would you have to put the thing in gear without being on it? It was blatant lack of common sense and a dumb thing to do. I think the employer is partially at fault because a 16 year old shouldn't have been using a forklift without training and supervision.
What a shame. His parents are also partly to blame. At 16 he is not an adult. Even if he can legally drive a car they should have been concerned for his welfare a tad more. Maybe they should have given him an extra few bucks allowance instead of making him live in the adult world of 9 to 5.
16 years old is still a kid! Justin Bieber is 17 and would you trust him with a forklift even if he can handle 19 year old Selena Gomez? Think about it.
If everyone is safe then just let the machine stop itself...even if it's going to smack into the boss's car. Anything can be repaired or replaced......except you !!!
i cant tell if this is fake... because really.. i use a forklift all day.. and i dont understand.. the wheels are turned, but yet the magically moved straight? i smell something fishy and i think its in this guys pants....
@Zombie101Survival if it is reall then at 16 he should never have goten the job.. if you cant jump in a forklift wile its moving then you definitely should not have the job they move slow and in jobs like that you need to move fast.. you should instinctively jump in the forklift and stop it and it look like he had some time to do it
@Zombie101Survival of course the video is a fake. It's a reenactment but I do think this guy has to take some of the blame too. He did something dumb. He did something very dumb. If my boss asked me to fly a plane ( I don't know how to do it) and I said yes, then if something goes wrong, I can't put all the blame on my employer
@Zombie101Survival dude thats not the real video is is? the forklift wouldnt go anywhere with the wheels turned that sharp..the 1's we use at work would prob stall and shut off..lol
@Sizerius Not all forklift trucks are equipped with the kill switch in the seat (trust me on that, I build them for Toyota) It is a retarded idea to engage anything into gear without being able to control it. If he had the correct training he would have been told NOT to do that and not to raise the forks with the hand brake off.
@Sizerius its a re enaction maining there showing you a fake version so you can see what happened safely. the wheels must have been turned when he did it
well when you were 16, even properly trained, did you have the grasp of what to do when stuff hit the fan.. he was still young, still naive about a lot of the world and workplaces around you.. it was like an 8th grader doing a high schooler's duties whether in sports or something else, they just don't have the maturity to think things through or make a common sense judgement- especially under pressure like when the forklift moved towards him.
i drive 3 kind forklift in my workplace and i training only for 1 week without anyone teach me. i have no prob wth that and i can take care all of my mistake bcome disaster..may be u head so slow for that piece shit thing
I personally have drove every type of fork lift that I know of. And Currently drive Taylor lifts for a precast company. I would with out a doubt say this was someone in a rush with bad judgement. I would NEVER put a lift in gear when standing on the ground. And my current lift you have 3 steps to get in so Im pretty sure its impossible anyways. I feel bad for the kid but hes pushing the fact he didnt have training......Yea do you put your car in gear when your out of it... Your to blame son.
@Xlt92bassist Nope, where I live (England) you can operate a forklift as young as 16 with a permit (which is easily obtained by any company, just 2 hours training.
And seeing as most Fork lifts operate on private land many drive them without licenses because in essence you don't need a license to operate one on your land, it's mostly the companies that regulate the use of FLT's, not the law.
Here in Victoria, you need a license to drive a forklift. But I'm sure that without pressing the gas, the forklift can still reverse if it's in gear. They never mentioned what has actually happened though, he broke his back; but are his legs paralyzed or something?
Sadly this has happened to me, same situation but with the fork lift that i was using has a tendency to go in a straight line but with noone holding the steering wheel instantly hard turns to the right, so i panicked and jumped back on as it was turning then it threw me off and went over me. I shattered my right foot and left leg. At that time I was 21 and worked there for about 4 month's.
major operator error. common sense is different with every person, but cmon guys. just jump on the lift, get it in neutral gear, and take the key off. it's not like it's going 70 mph!
im sorry this happend it really is terrible but...... for you to say this happend because of improper training? i dont agree with that .. i say that was more on the line of lack of common sense. and why didnt you just take it out of gear?
Kid just made a mistake. For any single to come on here and act all high and might like they have never done any stupid shit is really a pussy thing to do.
use your common sense people! these things are dangerous...
i myself drive a gigantic forklift of about 23 metric tons (+50000pounds) and when i'm in a small one it looks like i cant do anything wrong cz its just small but watching these video's from time to time refreshes my memory
also remember that although they look small they'r 3 or 4 times the weight of a normal car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this was an employer failure to properly train a way too young boy with a potentially lethal piece of equipement.he hasn't even crashed his first car.lol.His parents should possibly have intervened .before.but clearly the employers fault. a 16 year old doesn't understand danger at that level.he's full of piss and vinegar trying to be a man.which he isn't and he has no experience to realize that engageing a vehicle in gear with out being properly seated and in control WILL result in disaster
Where I work, you have to be eighteen before you can drive the lift equipment and be licensed. Common sense played a roll in this and that poor kid didn't have any. There are a lot of factors that went into this. He should never have put that lift in gear, but then the employer should have trained him better.
I'm a mechanic and I have seen what these forklifts can do to someone if they are in the way. We had some one who was working on one and had some jack stands collapse on them. the man was crushed but he survived. I have seen this video before and we use it in our occupational awareness. I never did find out if this kid was paralyzed or not. Just goes to show you common sense needs to be exercised and be aware of your surroundings.
thats sucks :( thats why you ALWAYS follow the safety rules. dont half ass things if your gonna do something ......... (do it right) or dont do it at all........ end of story
How is this an unsafe working environment!? No disrespect to him but he did everything wrong and the accident could have been easily avoided with a little common sense.
I believe this story is tragic, but you never know just how stupid some guys can be,you just cant guess that a guy will run himself over with a machine when you arent watching his every move-until one of them actually does it.
This is an eye opener, but companies will not pay for us trained personel any more,or pay for training for new equipment operators. What can we do-
I advise any one hiring a forklift driver to make them watch all of these you tube videos, including all trainers too...
these people who try to blame the employer can go to hell. Do you get in a car and put it in gear while your not even in it? NO. So why should the employer be blamed for this kids screw up? Ya we all make mistakes, and thats what HE did. Made a mistake. No one needs training to know not to put a vehicle or piece of equipment in gear while not even on/in it.
I find this video tough to believe, the employers I've seen in canada are insanely serious about safety and adhering to the laws and regulations on workplace safety. At one place I wasn't even permitted to cross a vacant traffic way, just to go to the office, without safety shoes on.
everyday at my job, i do forbidden thing with a forklift, like drive with the charge high (mean very high). It's because the roads we use are full of little boxes, on the ground. We say that to our bosses, but they don't care...and when you want to keep your job, you do it, but we all know it's forbidden, and if there's an accident, it's entirely our fault...sad.
doing snow removal professionally I have witnessed workers driving large capacity forklifts with make shift snow plows doing the same job as myself (inside a new one ton truck and all the safety devices imaginable)with no safety devises at all...if any of these vehicles had been sliding and thrown off any of the operators...the injuries could have been grave...
The company and he kid are at fault here. The company should require forklift training, and you are not legally aloud to let children under the age of 18 to operate machinery, not even a chop saw. The kid was a dumbass. First of all he should never had put it in gear, second he should have asked someone for help, it doesn't matter if you look like a dumbass for letting your forklift run wild.
Sorry but i can't see how the employer is at fault. He wasn't asked to move the forklift by his work please, was her? or did I miss that bit? If he was trained in forklift driving then he shouldn't have stood outside and turned the machine on - again, no employer told him to do that. If he wasn't trained in forklift use, why the hell did he take it upon himself to move it?
look kid. you said yourself you knew it was the wrong thing to do but you did it anyway.. doesn't sound like you were lacking training, what you were lacking was good judgement..
@MrMeanderthal I think he lacked immaturity and confidence more than anything. I have walked off jobs with no pay and no-where to go because of safety and high un-reasonable pressure to get the job done. Question: When is pressure un-reasonable? Answer: When it's more than you know you can handle.
@MrMeanderthal `doesn't sound like you were lacking training, what you were lacking was good judgement`
Here in Europe- netherlands YOU have to have a diploma/certifcate in order to drive those things.
And this guy is pretty YOUNG ... we all know young people are NOT that good in judging dangerous situations. Your brain is mature at 25 for godsakes .... so how can you blame him like this???
IT shouldn´t be possible to start/move a forklift or any machine like that!!!
@grahamcoles1966 wtf??? in our country u cant get drivers licence before 18 and to get forklifters qualification u need to have B category licence. and ussaly companies dont employ without 1 year experience
@grahamcoles1966 Well back in the late 1800's to early 1900's the US used people about 12 years old to mine coal so it's not an age factor it's a do you have any damn common sense factor and safety train factor etc...
@grahamcoles1966 Hey, im 16 and i can drive a forklift absolutely fine in fact im better then some of the people at work, just gotta know what your doing
@grahamcoles1966 why not? they are allowed to drive cars. they only endanger themselves and thier co workers if they operate a forklift, they endanger the general public when the drive a car.
@grahamcoles1966 so 16 year olds can drive f350s around at 70 mph but cant drive a forklift at 10 mph ? im sorry but if you can drive a huge truck you can drive a forklift.
@grahamcoles1966 bull shit, i was using them at 16. Its about the person who operate it. Not there age. If they can act like an adult let them have that job. If they cant then then dont put them in that job. I loved my job at 16 and i was plenty safe with it.
I don't care what anyone says a fork lift idling in gear he should have been able to jump in the thing and bring it to a stop.... That's total operator stupidity..
So sorry say wcb, but u not of age, a man work, as they say;Gotta be votin' age! No protesting wcb for thee,...no, no,... u must petition 4 new standards, ie simple basics b provided! A new WMIS code for operators...So have to sue in Court,& hope outcome also gives changes, in r mad mad mad mad world! Think on God more, study to show yourself approved, learning about all things again 4 first time;get a group(ACOA or ChronicPain).GodBless.Welcome to part o' MY nightmare. PVMA@10;WCB@19 PPD@ 28.
Never operate a forklift without proper training, most business requires a fork lift license to operate one. The forklift is going to win every time it hits something.
@midnightfapper It's not that weird. I was driving forklifts when I was like 13. It's not as if they're tough to operate. The guy was being lazy and it came back to bite him. This kind of thing should be common sense. We had a guy that tipped one over and stuck out his leg to catch himself and it landed on his leg. Thing is, there were donut tracks in the snow. The guy had been doing donuts...in a forklift. You gotta not be an idiot and you have respect for the machinery you work with that's all.
So he was too lazy/tired to "climb" into the chair and move the forklift? And then instead of running away from the forklift he runs around it? I don't get why....
No one is responsible but you! Ask for training if you feel you are not competent enough and if you are not sure don't do it! This is not a training mistake it's pure laziness or just to see if I can do it! Like he said he did it few times before him self... he is already developing a habit of doing the wrong thing... I would of fire you the first time if you worked for me!
I certainly have compassion for you!
Thank you for sharing the video and I hope others learn from your mistake!
I have no sympathy for this person AT ALL!
How is this the employers fault? He made the conscience decision to put a running vehicle in gear without being on it.

In Australia, you have to get a forklift license before you can use one, and you must also get a safety card before you can enter a work site. This ensures every body goes home safely to parents, spouses, and children. Of course, we still have a strong Union movement which didn't get raped by successive Presidents and Governors.
Demand safety. Unemployment is better than death.

to be honest, most of the time when people die from a forklift its because someone else was driving it.
harrisboy42 5 months ago
I dont know who made this video and I dont know what the guy filming was thinking but I think this story is fail and not true.
The reason for this is that forklift can not be moved or made to move by its own by only change gear. To actualy move/drive forklift left foot must constantly press the pedal which is safety kinda clutch. And other is gas pedal. If the safety pedal is not pressed the forklift will not move even tho you pressed gas pedal. So to move it you need to use bouth feet!!!!!!

What company in america would let a 16 year old drive a forklift? OSHA would eat that shit up and SLAM them with fines.

Forklifts are to be used by adults, and only by adults. Noone under the age of 18 should be allowed to use them. EVER!

Fake... first the tires were in a steering position, and then they were somehow in a straight position.
Fortunately IF this accident did happen for real, most modern forklifts have a killswitch in the seat, so it can't go off by itself.
Moral of the story: Don't rely on old crap or you might hurt your back.
Sizerius 7 months ago 2
@Sizerius Not all forklift trucks are equipped with the kill switch in the seat (trust me on that, I build them for Toyota) It is a retarded idea to engage anything into gear without being able to control it. If he had the correct training he would have been told NOT to do that and not to raise the forks with the hand brake off.

well when you were 16, even properly trained, did you have the grasp of what to do when stuff hit the fan.. he was still young, still naive about a lot of the world and workplaces around you.. it was like an 8th grader doing a high schooler's duties whether in sports or something else, they just don't have the maturity to think things through or make a common sense judgement- especially under pressure like when the forklift moved towards him.

I've made judgement errors too in my life, cutting corners and such. Who hasn't? I'm grateful nothing happened to me or my co-workers.
This is about bad luck and silly decisions. Not overall stupidity. This is a smart young man getting hurt by trying to right his error.
Nomasain 8 months ago
Seems like forklifts should have cutoff sensors in the seat that guarantee someone is sitting in them while they are running.
Lin4Masses 8 months ago
I personally have drove every type of fork lift that I know of. And Currently drive Taylor lifts for a precast company. I would with out a doubt say this was someone in a rush with bad judgement. I would NEVER put a lift in gear when standing on the ground. And my current lift you have 3 steps to get in so Im pretty sure its impossible anyways. I feel bad for the kid but hes pushing the fact he didnt have training......Yea do you put your car in gear when your out of it... Your to blame son.
LiveFreeOrRIP 8 months ago
um, i was always under the impression, that by law you needed to be 21 to operate a forklift...
Xlt92bassist 8 months ago

RIPkingofpopXX 9 months ago
Sadly this has happened to me, same situation but with the fork lift that i was using has a tendency to go in a straight line but with noone holding the steering wheel instantly hard turns to the right, so i panicked and jumped back on as it was turning then it threw me off and went over me. I shattered my right foot and left leg. At that time I was 21 and worked there for about 4 month's.

this was an employer failure to properly train a way too young boy with a potentially lethal piece of equipement.he hasn't even crashed his first car.lol.His parents should possibly have intervened .before.but clearly the employers fault. a 16 year old doesn't understand danger at that level.he's full of piss and vinegar trying to be a man.which he isn't and he has no experience to realize that engageing a vehicle in gear with out being properly seated and in control WILL result in disaster
muircastle1 10 months ago

What can we do-
I advise any one hiring a forklift driver to make them watch all of these you tube videos, including all trainers too...
woodnsteel19 11 months ago
these people who try to blame the employer can go to hell.

The company and he kid are at fault here. The company should require forklift training, and you are not legally aloud to let children under the age of 18 to operate machinery, not even a chop saw.
