That laptop isn't as old as you think ! you can even install modern linux distros based on Gnome desktop on it ,
I have a Dell latitude 110l with Pentium M 1.6 Ghz CPU and 256 Mb of ram, I have installed on it many modern Ubuntu distros and ubuntu based linux distros, Ubuntu 11.04, Ubuntu 11.10, Lubuntu 11.10, Xubuntu 11.04, Linux Mint 10 Gnome, Linux Mint 11Gnome, Backtrack 5 Gnome.
Thanks for the advice but that lap is ugly and heavy and the battery is wasted, I will use it as it is until I buy another one, I'm a college student so I need a better lap.
@Amn32ia Running the OS doesn't mean you'll be able to run all the software that is available. Check game and other software requirements before asking what's wrong. Such lightweight distros are made to run on old machines, however games are made to use the best of the latest hardware. Again, read the requirements for the software and get familiar with your available hardware.
i got an old Thinkpad T20 with 512 megs of ram, 160 gig hard drive, PIII 650 mhz, and i am running Xubuntu 11.04 fine on it. even running wireless and using it as a gateway for my 360!
@Amn32ia Sorry about the delay. While I was testing the machine with Knoppix, it froze with games. It's just too old and slow to run them I think. But since I'm not that big Linux guru... Have you asked help from Linux forums? Maybe some guru there knows better, if it's a problem that could be fixed with a piece of code. :)
@TheMichaelBender Yeah, how dare something be simple! I'm a 30 year computer veteran and believe me, anything that makes life easier is your best friend. Oh, and 60% of the Linux Developer Conference attendees have Macs, 96% of those run OS-X for the rest OS-X / Debian dual boot.
@TheMichaelBender I know, I know, its tricky. I still set up Windows to look like W95, well, IRIX actually! There is something inherently awful about GUI everything in a PC but perhaps thats how it is marketted? Grinning idiots who have no concept of how to access their media in 10 years or whos accessing it now. Wheres the reality? That said, I actually like Windows7 out of the box and I was given a PowerMac G5 which is ace. I still have 3 SGI Indigos however :o)
I have more or less standardized on Puppy 431 for such purposes. It is small and very fast and quite bug free so I stay with it.
It comes with basically everything needed. For installing extra stuff onto a laptop that can't get to the network, you can download the "pet" file and put it on the memory stick and then install it the next time you boot the laptop.
@LadyDiWolfe There are 2 videos up. One is on Ralfanzo83's channel and currently in my feature box on my channel. The other one is on my channel called, "STILL No Comment". Other than that, I didn't really do a lot of video shooting on my trip. I mostly took photos.
@Sugartalker Ooh... it would have been so great to see something like "Educational Film Fail" too. Well, when you'll visit in Sweden again, maybe then you (or we? Who knows! LOL) will have a chance to do a video there. ;)
Hello Anna, why do you say it has no hard drive. They were originally fitted with a 20 GB, or 30 GB Hard drive? Great to see you back again, 6 months is too long! ;o)
@gerdenshed Oh yes, it HAD a 20GB hard drive but that had to be removed because of security reasons. :P Anyhow, the machine seems to run fine even without it. :D
Yes, 6 months is a long time. :/ Then again, 24 hours is not enough for a day! Eeek!
You are to old for YouTube! GTF YT!

@georemo1 add some more ram and upgrade to the 2.0 ghz Pentium m cpu and you could run games on that ting.

1.2 MHz? xD You mean 1.2 GHz? 1.2Mhz is almost like NES/Commodore 64..
PS: You are finnish? I recognize it from your accent.. :D
Nikiz001 4 months ago
@Nikiz001 That's true, I did a mistake there: it's 1.2 GHz.
Finnish? You have an ear for accents.
