I used to have a neighbour who was in the Great war, he was posted with a Scottish regiment. The stories he told were beyond anyone's wildest beliefs, to the point of being surreal. That men volunteered and stood in defence of their King and Country is amazing and humbling. Remember our veterans and God Bless them...
It is worth mentioning that this clip comes from a film made by Wim Van der Linden for the Passchendaele Genootshcap - the volunteers who promote the Paschendaele Memorial.
Beautiful!!! Thank you for posting this! This reminds me of my own grandfather, Albert Frederick Rassmuss, who fought on the horrible battlefields of France in World War I. And also Frank Buckles the last known living American World War I veteran.
alan truely is a great man, i would really like to pashendale one day , i think it would be hard hittin and emotional , congrats allan great song again :)
Passendale might be a little setback. It has a few houses and some streets leading to real places and a cheese museum. On a really sunny day you can see that P. lies on the 'heights' and gives a great view on the grounds around Ieper. I advise you to visit Tyne Cot Cemetery and the museums at Zonnebeke (near Passendale), the small museum nearby Hooge Crater Cemetery and the one near Hill 62. And at 8 pm, you have to hear the Last Post at Ieper. That goes without saying :-)
"Yank", "Canuck", or "Limey" whatever word we call each other - we stand together on common ground. This ground is hallowed, made so by the blood of our veterans that fought side by side in the greatest conflicts of the 20th century. We are brothers. Lest we forget... We will remember them.

Yes TuxedoElf, I agree. It is indeed heartbreaking. My mother tells me that my grandmother used to tell her that there was nothing sadder than a troop train leaving for the front. All we can do is try to do the best for our country in a way that they would be proud of.

@RangerGhost Not sure what country you are in, but our kids in the USA are reading fictional history in school, the only mistakes they speak of are ones they can blame on capitalism or religion, instead of on politicians who say they know what is best for all of us while craving more power and wealth at the expense of the ordainary those they expect to die for them. That is the path to war everytime, and we are on it again. The lessons of history are not forgotten, they have been erased.
In the movie where the young kid gets blown up into that mixture of barbed wire and wood that's almost in the shape of a cross is moving.Every-one just stopped and watched him hanging there as his pal goes to pull him off.Powerful image.

God rest the souls of both sides, British and German, who fell at Passchendaele. What remained of the Christian chivalry, valor, and hardihood of Europe was shredded and thrown away in the civilizational suicide of the Great War. Europe and the world are so much lesser and poorer today for that loss.
Thanks Alan Brydon for this lovely tune and touching lyrics.
Thanks Kritybrite for sharing this fantastic video. It will always remember me of my great-granny who was just 3 years old, when Passchendaele happened...
I remember listieing to this song on the set of "Passchendaele" We were about to shoot the German counter-attack just as the a company of 60 men from the Calgary 10th Battalion (Then known as the fighting 10th and now as the Calgary Highlanders) Me and three other guys sang the song just the Germans came close. The sounds of Bagpipes in our heads calmed us as prepared oursleves for the fight
Strange, because Gross seemed not interested at all to use the song for his film "Passchendaele", even if it has been offered to him both by Alan Brydon and the people of Passchendaele at the occasion of his participation on the ceremony on the Passchendaele ceremony 2007 which I organise every year on behalf of the Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917. In between the song and pipetune are becoming real "standards", as they are played from New Zealand to Canada by many singers and pipebands.
As always, Alan has given a fantastic trubute to those very brave fallen soldiers. Very very emotive, of course the pipes really set the whole scence.
For what they did so that we could live life as we know it today. I couldn't imagine this generation ever having to go through that. To be honest I don't think there are as many today with that sort of character as there was then. Canada, Britain and the Anzacs were a formiddible fighting force who were to be reconned with.
To all the Canadians who died winning this battle, I shall never forget you. Canada indeed out of all the allied forces lost more per capita than any other. Canada lost an entire Generation of men between the ages 16 and 30, we indeed paid a huge price. But if our forefathers whether British or Canadian had not done what they did, Germany would have continued their quest for world dominance. So, let us remember what they did for us, whether British or Canadian and be thankful ......
I love this song, Im from Hawick an iv been to the war graves an this song just bring back the emotion i felt when i walked in between the perfectly kept graves. Just liek ti sa well dun Alan this song is teesh. may we never forget those who gave there lives for our freedom. RIP
Had me in tears there. we can only guess what it must have been like. If only those who argue about trivialities like some below would stop and let the emotions flow.
It doesn't matter what generals were good and which were bad. Men died in their thousands, often after only minutes of going over the top.
And not all Br. generals were morons; what about Byng? Allenby? Plumer? They were well respected by their men. And Haig did pretty well in the Last 100 Days. The lions-led-by-donkeys argument by post-war non-combatants, like the pillorying of Sir Arthur Harris of WW II Bomber Command fame, tarnishes the memory of those who fought under them, and doesn't seem to sit well with veterans. The Brit. gen.s had fought little frontier battles before 1914, but went on to beat the world's best army.
Gone but not forgotten, lest we forget those brave young men, all faiths, all cultures, side by side, shoulder to shoulder, at the going down of the sun and in the morning we shall remember them.
Respect and god bless to our fallen and also to those who fight on behalf of our country today in Iraq or Afganistan.
AS an Ulster Volunteer watching the video of 'The Road to Paschendale' brought more than a few tears to my eyes. Such a lovely rendition with haunting footage. What a fitting tribute to our Fallen Comrades, if only they had the chance to sit where I sit to view the Heroics of the actions. For God and Ulster Dearly Beloved and Fallen Comrades, We walked that Bloody Road to the Somme. At the Going down of the Sun, We'll Marshall up once again! YOU REMAIN IN MY MEMORY FOREVER YOUNG!
SteveB, my late dad fought in WWII, landing on D Day. His Scots Regmt, the KOSB's fought alongside an Ulster regiment in the battle for Caen.
My dad's regiment were told to hold out for days. The days became weeks as the Germans had a Panzer tank regiment opposing them.
My dad said it was great when the Irish arrived and he knew he'd live. One said to him "well done, Jock, leave it to the Ulstermen now" with a wink. "So brave they were" my dad would say with tears in his eyes.
This is a touching song. My hero, Henry John "Harry" Patch, fought in Passchendaele. Harry is the last surviving British veteran to have fought in the trenches. He will turn 110 years old on June 17, 2008.
Passendale is a rural village near Ypres in the Belgian province of West Flanders and a part of ("deelgemeente") the municipality of Zonnebeke.
Passendale is especially known since World War I. The old spelling of the Flemish name - Passchendaele - is used in the English war history to indicate the historic battle fought in Passendale (which turned out to be possibly one of the bloodiest campaigns of the entire war). The town was completely leveled during this conflict.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
"Once again, it took the Canadians to get the job finally done! What the Brits couldn't do, the Canadian Corps finally obtained the village of Passchendaele on November 8, 1917".
Just like you did at Dieppe, or do you tend to forget that one? Haig was an upper class snob who sacrificed our lads like pawns on a chess board while he sat and made merry with the rest of his generals miles from the front line. What he did to ALL the troops was and still is unforgivablem may he rot in hell. ( From a disgruntled Jock)
As a proud Scottish Canadian I feel like slapping you in the face. General Haig was a moron, responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths. The best thing that happened to the Canadians corps was that they soon were taken over by Sir Arthur Currie's command and no longer under British command. Study your history child.
Enough with the "my great granddad's dick was bigger than your great granddad's dick". It was a team effort. Personally, I think the Canadians and Anzacs had the best corps in the BEF, but there were plenty of good British units too; look at the 46th Div. at the Hindenburg Line. Plenty of British and Anzacs got the chop getting the Canucks within jump-off distance from Passchendaele. Canada gave four divisions; Britain gave over five ARMIES.
"dude remember unlike britian tht was all we could give for we didnt have a real army before the war"
Neither Britain nor Canada had a big standing army like Germany, France, Austria or Russia. Both (and the ANZACS) deserve a lot of credit for molding a citizen army which struck the heaviest blows at the Kaiser's army at war's end. CA gave even more than the UK, per capita. But I don't like the "Commonwealth types did all the work" bragging. Reminds me of the Texans at home!
Ya i dont like it when people brag about the war. Feel proud about what your soldiers did but dont rub it into others faces saying that their soldiers were better than the other armies they all were great.
I think he meant what he said. I am proud to be Scottish as well as being proud to be British. The feeling I get watching this video and listening is a tremendous feeling of gratitude to EVERY last one who gave up their lives for us. May they all rest in peace, we shall never forget them.

Can you quantify that with figures, I think you are wrong. I think it was the French then German then English?

Highest percentage of population lost from the British Empire was Scotland. Overall, it was Serbia.

Had me in tears there. we can only guess what it must have been like. If only those who argue about trivialities like some below would stop and let the emotions flow.
It doesn't matter what generals were good and which were bad. Men died in their thousands, often after only minutes of going over the top.
War is futile. RIP, brave Scots.

Ypres?

Passendale is a rural village near Ypres in the Belgian province of West Flanders and a part of ("deelgemeente") the municipality of Zonnebeke.
Passendale is especially known since World War I. The old spelling of the Flemish name - Passchendaele - is used in the English war history to indicate the historic battle fought in Passendale (which turned out to be possibly one of the bloodiest campaigns of the entire war). The town was completely leveled during this conflict.

And a grimly appropriate name: "Passchendaele" - "Valley of the Passion" - Gethsemane.

"Once again, it took the Canadians to get the job finally done! What the Brits couldn't do, the Canadian Corps finally obtained the village of Passchendaele on November 8, 1917".
Sir Douglas Haig
fatford41 4 years ago
Just like you did at Dieppe, or do you tend to forget that one? Haig was an upper class snob who sacrificed our lads like pawns on a chess board while he sat and made merry with the rest of his generals miles from the front line. What he did to ALL the troops was and still is unforgivablem may he rot in hell. ( From a disgruntled Jock)
ghostpiper1 4 years ago
As a proud Scottish Canadian I feel like slapping you in the face. General Haig was a moron, responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths. The best thing that happened to the Canadians corps was that they soon were taken over by Sir Arthur Currie's command and no longer under British command. Study your history child.
Thebigbust2001 3 years ago
