Are evil xanterra still running 29? Now I say evil, because the Grand Canyon RR was one of the best hot spots for steam in the US (top 5) and had a great fan fair! Then greenie meanie came along and got rid of the best part! Then after a while they thought "Gee, maybe would should use the Steam engines for more money", and so I hate the greens of Xanterra and if they are listening, bring back steam or you will NEVER see a dime from me, and when I mean bring back, bring it back to normal!
dang it i wish i could ride on the steamtrain did you know the retired the train and they use a diesel now Stupid EPA that crap about global warming is bull
Definately- Xanterra needs to figure out how to couple customer satisfaction and making money. They easily go hand in hand. They seem to not even care. You would think that Anschutz, would recognize the peoples want for the steam. But hey I guess diesel will make him a few more pennies. Too bad. :(
They will be running steam on 5/29,5/ 0, 7/3, 7/4, 9/4, 9/5 this is the Cataract Rambler. it is an 8 mile round trip. :(
ONE DAY ONLY TO THE CANYON 9/18/10 STEAM STEAM STEAM!!!
The Grand Canyon Railway just dropped fire on steam. The locomotives will be sold off. So sad. A railroad I was looking forward to visit now out of the works because they stopped steam. Big mistake.
Another thing they didn't consider was that they had dropped half of their roster, and they're planning to run four trains to and from the canyon. And supposidly, the greenies are also wanting to axe the FPA4's. And pretty soon, all that's left will be the 239 and 2134. And I don't think a little GP7 can handle a 15 car train all by itself.
The diesel locomotive behind the #29 is used to help generate electricity, and help power the brakes too. The steamer does all the power of hauling. The diesel is a rare and beautifully restored first generation. Engine #29 is a nice locomotive, and so is the 4960.
Wonderful ride..recommended!

I know that the railway restored the 2-8-2 which run on waste vegetable oil, but are there any plans to restore 29?

If there is a next time, consider a tripod and a sock for the microphone. Otherwise nice.

I really hope that these engines will find homes on other tourist railroads and operate.

At least 18 found a good home- it was lucky to escape the GCRY before...the INCIDENT. (Xanterra ownership.)

Well Newark Scenic RR needs a steamer and this one or 4960 would be great.

Yeah. They say it was for financial reasons, but in reality the new owners are a bunch of greenies and that's why.

Damn those greenies. They have lost my patronage.

What is the 3rd unit behind the Alco?
OScaleAmtrak 3 years ago
I believe that's a railcar used to generate power for the passenger cars.
