I think I lost faith in kids today. I was at the park with a couple of friends b4 my church youth group started and I saw about 4 or 5 twelve year old boys sitting at a bench with a football and they were all texting away on their phones so I walked over 2 them to ask if they wnted 2 play catch & they did but the entire damn time all they did was check their phones. My kids watch one hour of tv and play outside. They fish and craft and read. This is the future i want for my kids. We say the pledge every morning.

When i was their age (im 20) me and all my neighborhood friends would be outside playing from the time we woke up to the time we had to go home for dinner, then after dinner we all met up again and played night games til curfew. This song reminds me of just how different life as a kid is from life with my kids now. When I was a kid we washed laundry by hand, watched black and white tv with an atennna, no phones, no car seats. No one plays outside anymore, their to glued to the stallite tv, the wireless internet, the cell phone and their video games. They get in more trouble too cause everyone is afraid to spank them. It was a different world back then, and kids showed more respect.

Whe riding in the car, my hand against the dash was my seatbelt when I rode in the front seat on my knees. I've never owned a bicycle helmet, my mom would tap anything with skin on it with her paddle when I acted up, We had video games, but they were turned off repeatedly, we rode thousands of miles on our bicycles, and we ate what was put in front of us. And my brother and I turned out alright. Oh, and we weren't invited to every birthday party every kid in our class had.

@hagen5690 I hear ya! I asked my 12 yr old son to write his name in cursive and he said"what's that?" !! He couldn't read a sentence in cursive and he's in middle school honors classes! So Now I'm teaching him... schools? pssssssh. This song brings me back to when I was growing up and we didn't even have to lock our doors.

@titanfighter12 It was a BETTER world. Technology is making this world horrid. Look up these; Atari, Nintendo , Nintendo Gameboy 1989 , Sega Genesis. Those are the games I grew up with. I miss them dearly. I still have a my Gameboy. It still works. I also have a Super Nintendo. I am VERY old fashioned. My 12 year old cousin made fun of my for getting my first CD when I was 11. They didn't EXIST until then. We had cassette tapes before that. I would also like to say, The Wii scares me.O_o

@Bassmastr100 I'm 16. I think the point of this song was to acknowledge the fact that with time comes change. He sings"we were born to mothers who smoked and drank", I'm not sure how this makes your generation better than the next. He also sings that it was a "different world" not a "better world."

It seems to highlight that we are probably over-reacting about things like, lead-based paint covered cribs, riding without a helmet (oh my!), and a mother drinking while pregnant (*gasps*) It seems to me that the days of little children walking to school became, "ride the bus, or be kidnapped" and "play video games so you don't get hurt playing rough sports like football or Frisbee". I think. I wish I KNEW.

Im 17, and even tho our generation was not as good as the one before, but sadly i think my generation is gonna be the last one that went outside and played with their friends, drank from the water hose, or had your dad teach you how to drive the old rust bucket in the pasture at 10. I hate to say it, but i see that happen. But i know for damn sure my kids going to be outside playing or hunting, or workin his ass off making a honest buck at the ranch.

@SuperPatriotMom I home scholl my kids. i was raised in the country on a dairy farm. Most kids these days dont have the since of responsibilities we had. My kids watch one hour of tv and play outside. They fish and craft and read. This is the future i want for my kids. We say the pledge every morning.

@BIGTEXESC exactly.. i see only a few young kids run around my neighborhood during the summer and weekends. When i was their age (im 20) me and all my neighborhood friends would be outside playing from the time we woke up to the time we had to go home for dinner, then after dinner we all met up again and played night games til curfew. I learned how to drive in a truck on an old dirt road during deer season. Like Rodney Atkins said "I was lucky and I didnt even know it growing up like that"

This song reminds me of just how different life as a kid is from life with my kids now. When I was a kid we washed laundry by hand, watched black and white tv with an atennna, no phones, no car seats. No one plays outside anymore, their to glued to the stallite tv, the wireless internet, the cell phone and their video games. They get in more trouble too cause everyone is afraid to spank them. It was a different world back then, and kids showed more respect.

I'm going to raise my kids different than what Is what is now expected, Curfew will be lightning bugs, Call them inside by their name, not cell phone, I'll let them drink from the hose and say they lived after haha, Not much video games.

Im 70 years old and even with all the hardships and doing without I would go back in a min if I could. Back then everyone helped each other. Families stuck together. Sure things were hard but the good for me outweighed the bad by far

Whe riding in the car, my hand against the dash was my seatbelt when I rode in the front seat on my knees. I've never owned a bicycle helmet, my mom would tap anything with skin on it with her paddle when I acted up, We had video games, but they were turned off repeatedly, we rode thousands of miles on our bicycles, and we ate what was put in front of us. And my brother and I turned out alright. Oh, and we weren't invited to every birthday party every kid in our class had.

All of this wouldn't happen if the kids were fed bacon and eggs instead of processed sugar.
