The Boston Philharmonic is about to perform this piece in October. We have performed #5 in the past year and I am particularly excited about the upcoming preparation and concert. I thank you for your post as it has helped me familarize myself with the music.

I really need to get to know Nielsen more, I like music from the early 20th c and he is certainly one of the most original and interesting from this period, thanks for posting this wonderful symphony.
This is just a great symphony - and it took me many years to grasp it - outwardly shiny and easy to follow AND uncompromisingly original and profound, SANGUINE music. "The inextinguishable" is actually a misleading translation. The Danish title means "That, what cannot be extinguished" - it doesn´t mean "the inextinguishable symphony". ... and Blomstedt gets it right ;-)
No. I don't think it respects the architecture of the work very well at all. It's not weighty enough where it should be, i.e. at the start, and at the end it's so slow it sounds like a national anthem.
@textthing I agree, there seems to be a tendency of this with recordings I have heard from the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, don't know whether it's the recording venue or the orchestra itself (which is a bit hard to believe)
@bratwurstle Not really, he's just good at infusing his syms with attractive ideas...but in general his syms sound like a lot of composers at that time.
A very great symphony right up there with the likes of Shostakovich, Sibelius and Vaughan Williams. The slow movement is the epitome of anguish.

Not enough weight in this reading - hasty and underpowered.
