  • Marylin Monroe was murdered.

  • Oh it's 2 songs not one very long one.

  • Natalie is one the best female performers in the world. She is beautiful, moves with grace, beauty and dignity. Her class and self assuredness suggest a self contained person not needing and unheedful of your approval, and, rightfully so. Thank you for posting.

  • I think that Natalie Merchant has one of the most incredible voices I have ever heard, but on stage she appears so awkward it sort of creeps me out.

  • Wow. She is one awesome and talented woman. Thank you for uploading.

  • lol I love the slow fade out of Natalies cut out just before Eat for Two.

  • wow... she's on-point about people's morbid fascination. yeppp... but she's damn good tho

  • i remember when my uncle and step dad used to put this song on and make me do yard work. they were a couple of fucking maniacs

  • If I as a man ever imagined I had a "type" of female to be my very own, Ms Natalie would've been the one...

  • thankyou for posting this.

  • The Jesuits killed Kennedy.

  • OoOh..this song reminds me of when I was pregnant with my son:) good song:)

  • why lament anyone's capacity for drinking? is the same done for over eaters! I'm all for congratulating talented people - never got why drinking is some sort of achievement or sportsman like accomplishment. keepy uppy with pints!

  • @JasonXP1000 Perhaps it is because so many talented people were talented due to (or inspite of) their inner pain. They created as an outlet, they abused substances (including food) as a outlet..were they afraid of their success...or afraid that it was all a fluke and that they COULDN'T repeat it? Living in fear - day in and day out - in the public eye will make you seek refuge where you can find it.

  • i know there has been other artist that has touched on women issues but 10 Maniacds and Natalie really put women issues in the spotlight....or at least helped it along in the 90's... I love this band and the yes this was an incredible time for music.

  • The Early 90's... What An Incredible Time For Music.

    Nostalgia For Us All. -

  • @chrisfilms84

The 80´s were ten times better.

  • she is just wonderful a much missed band Natalies vocal always beautiful provocative and a lushess

  • she is just wonderful a much missed band Natalies vocal always beautiful provocative and lushess

  • The milf version of Marilyn Monroe would have been tight

  • nary a song could hope to befit Jack's painful legacy....shout at the moon and hoist your pleasures and cast your eyes toward Heavan...where he is safe and smiling

  • Don't know anything about Natalie or her band but I found these clips by accident trying to find something else. Now I'm hooked on her, I am an instant fan. She is so cool and talented and makes her performance seem effortless. As if her only agender is to sing it out. Love her she is awesome.

  • so so good

  • i love this song

  • she hasnt touched how she was with these guys after going solo

  • she should be as blunt in her song lyrics as she was in the middle of this video.

  • really!

  • i love you natalie

  • luu natalie but i cant understand her sometime.

  • 4 words for you.....God Bless this woman.

  • natalie left the band for monetary reasons.. After being on the road for years you have to re-asses your priorities.. like making a living off your talent, and not draging around dead weight... R-I-P Robert Buck.. You started this thing called 10,000 maniacs and molded the sound.. So you were definitly not dead weight..

  • this is a great record

  • In Chinatown, Howlin' at Night... sh's beautiful, esoterically brilliant, lyrical and perfect. Saw her 8/20/10 in Austin, TX at Paramount Theatre. BEST!

  • Marry Me Natalie !!

  • Unwanted pregnancy... yeah, like us men can really grasp that one! I love you Natalie.

  • This is poetry

  • Natalie Merchant left the band for her solo career in 1992. Doesn't anyone do their homework?

  • They started in the 80's. This is 1987 from the In My Tribe album.

  • Fuck you! I'm gonna drink myself... I already have sagging tits AND bags under my eyes.

  • @GirlFilmsHollywood *edit drink myself to death.

  • only real artists could come up with lyrics like this. the maniacs and some of my happiest memories go hand in hand. i guess i am a San Francisco person at heart.

  • It is so long since i heard this but i am glad i dropped by.

  • Natalie Merchant is OK on her own, but gets boring to listen to.

But in combination with 10,000 Maniacs, she ranks with Mary Travers in PP&M, Stevie Nicks in Fleetwood Mac, Dale Krantz in Rossington-Collins, etc. as a leader of a generation and music that survives for decades on radio.

  • Never was there a female performer's voice that soothed me like Natalie Merchant.

Back in the 90's, if I'd had a bad day, I would put the "Unplugged" CD into the player, listen to her singing and everything would be better.

  • @cosmotcat I know, right? Something about that voice just puts me right, again. She's an angel. Nuff said.

  • The cool junk booting madmen Street minded girls In Harlem, howling at night What a tear stained shock of the world You've gone away without saying Goodbye

  • You chose your words from mouths of Babes got lost in the world The hip-flask slinging madmen Steaming café flirts In Chinatown, howling at night Allen baby, why so jaded? Have the boys all grown up and their beauty faded? Billy, what a saint they made you You're just like Mary down in Mexico On All Souls' Day

You chose your words from mouths of Babes lost in the world

  • Hey Jack, now for the tricky part When you were the brightest star Who were the shadows? Of the San Francisco beat boys You were the favourite Now they sit and rattle their bones And think of their blood stoned days

  • Hey Jack Kerouac I think of you mother And all the tears she cried She would cry for none other Than her little boy lost in a little world that hated And that dared to drag him down Her little boy courageous He chose his words from mouths of Babes got lost in the world The hip-flash slinging madmen Steaming café flirts

    They all spoke through you

  • hey madame or miss or señora,,i have written all my life with your songs near to my ear,,here in mexico there are a lots of good loving people,,and any one one whants to become or has..what they whant to be or become...mexico has the people tha blood dears.....any way i will always hear your lovely voice..its so adicted,,,,far and softlty near here..from down from old baby maxico

  • other than "ok jack here's the tricky part" i cant understand what she's saying

  • GO NAT!!!

  • she is my fav-or-ite

  • I think I'm witnessing Eddie Vedder's singing style inspiration.

  • I always had a crush on her, she's beautiful!

  • I'm so glad Ugly Betty finally got rid of the glasses and braces LOL! Truthfully, I do adore Natalie. Her words taught me there's more to life than shallowness and vanity. And I love hearing her talking about Marilyn's saggy tits in this clip!

  • Allen baby, why so jaded? Have the boys all grown up and their beauty faded? Billy, what a saint they've made you, just like Mary down in Mexico on All Souls' Day.

  • @TakeApart wot a tear stained shock on the world

  • @TakeApart

chose his words from mouths of babes, got lost in the wood ...

  • i'm having trouble understanding the lyrics..

  • This is one of my MANY favorite 10,000 Maniacs songs. Hey Jack Kerouac.. AND one of my fav people Georgina resembles her!

  • "Billy! Allen! Jack!"

RIP, brothers in the dead night.

  • yeah Natalie makes me crazy with her voice and get up. I love her to death. The Night Belongs to Lovers has to be one of the top songs created/performed in the last 50 years or more.

  • Natalie merchant opened my eyes in the early 1990s. Still love her.

  • 1989 is when this album, blind man's zoo, came out.

  • There is nothing. Nothing in this world like Natalie Merchant. Saludos de Panama. Love and Peace.

  • BANG THOSE SKINS JERRY....GO BABY, GO!

  • Some of the inane comments here serve to remind me that one of the most remarkable of NM's character traits is that she's always willing to speak truth to stupidity when most of us would just give up.

  • @Martel1946 She, as we have discussed, is also capable of spouting cant, lecturing people in a bossy way and being pious and pretentious. The voice makes up for it. It even makes up for her dewy eyed, rose-tinted, blinkered adulation of Clinton. She lives in an ivory tower, like so many performers, but at least she's not as bad as Bono and we can at least be thankful for that.

  • @sunbeam11 Here's something of which you should be aware: when confronted with thickheaded loons, it's always much more gracious to lecture them than to smash their skulls. When you're busy being a thickheaded loon, try to remember that because you may not be confronted by a gracious lecturer.

  • I love Natalie

  • But surely the way he lived and died, and his writings, embodied something more complex than "self destructiveness" , a phrase that always carries so many assumptions, sometimes moralistic ones. His huge openness to poetry for instance and all the freedom and energy needed to consummate that . Much at odds with the safety of the 9 to 5 , but although it is sad he died young of course could all this have been the same if he was concentrating on avoiding all those dangers.

  • @insidethetree ...My friend, On The Road is my favorite book. I have been in

City Lights bookstore in SF....I walked the alleyway named after Jack that is there, but

I must say as a Father, seeing Jack Kerouac in the interview with William F. Buckley Jr. was.....beyond sad, beyond sobering. It is a living example of the theme of the book....hiding loneliness, only in the interview Jack can no longer hide. You see it and hear it in his slurred speach and lost trains of thought.

  • Cool

  • Apparently. I missed this whole argument. I still don't understand what the beef is between the 2pple on here and with Natalie.

  • I saw them play this while opening up for REM..great show and great song!

My favorite TM album (In My tribe) and possibly my favorite song. Peter Buck classic!

  • @barrycw1 err, Rob Buck classic!

  • "on the road",first book i ever laid my hands on ...

  • I love Natalie

  • man, I just love this sound.. the voice and her beauty just work so well.. I would love to see them get back together and put out some new music.. Life is too short Natalie... Just do it!

  • @jimdigrizrn

True, but consider that she knew River Phoenix personally. Of course she may have a different take on a personal friend who was self-destructive.

  • I saw Natalie perform this past week and she was absolutely amazing! An incredibly spectacular show and her voice has gotten even better and stronger in my opinion. I look at some of these older lives shows on youtube and I think her performance last week outshines them all. If you get a chance go and see her live. She is an absolute powerhouse.

  • I heard this song is about unwanted pregnancies and abortion.... All I can say is that people have their reasons... I was 17 years old when MY LITTLE PRINCESS WAS BORN........ And true, it was extremely hard, but she became a beautiful human being.... 20 years later she has a child of her own, and I couldn't be anymore proud!! I love you KIM and ANAI you too are MY WHOLE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • insightful, thoughtful woman....

  • I think she should do an English version of this. Here she appears to be singing in ultra-leftist-gibberish.

  • @mvbeckril I'm sorry. You should translate that into English. I don't read ultra-nazi-gibberish.

  • She was truly a good pot singer

  • Kerouac would of puked....................

  • More at your grammar than anything.

It's "would have", not "would of".

    Kind of ironic really.

  • @SolarSmudge BOOM GOT HIM

  • Where is the closed captioning ... who can understand a word she is singing ...

  • Its true she had a habit of slurring her words on early albums and here too. I sort of preferred it though to when she went all solo, couture clothes, rather naive liberalism, hanging out with billy bragg, endorsing clinton etc.

Last time I heard a recent track of hers, her voice seemed to have had some kind of crisis, coming out very dry and cracked and wizened. I dont know if she has been ill or not

  • It's called old age.

Mariah Carey has also lost her voice now that she's hit her 40s. The body declines, and that includes the vocal cords.

  • Im quite aware of that but it seems to have happened to her relatively young and quite strongly. Neil Young is about 160 and still sounds much the same and Joni Mitchell's voice remained the same until quite recently and she is no spring chicken. I think something other than simple ageing has happened to Nathalie's voice

  • @sunbeam11Neil Young sounds almost as bad as Dylan. There's nothing wrong with Natalie's voice, but this isn't a good example. This performance (at least 18 years ago) was not one of her best. Then there's the fact that the audio quality is exceptionally poor.

She was a lot younger then and had a somewhat higher range (which was never above contralto), but she sounds just as great now as she did at her best then.

Aside from that, she's one of the best song writers alive.

  • @Martel1946 Firstly she does not sound better now than she did back then, her voice has aged. We all suffer with ageing of course, but she seems to have suffered worse than most.

Secondly I do not think ' naive ideological arrogance' actually makes any sense. My comments were absolutely crystal clear and were not in Martian or any other non-human language. It may be that because your head is so far up your arse you have trouble with reading the Queen's english,

  • @sunbeam11 I've got to disagree... I saw her live at a small show last week and she was a powerhouse, no signs of weakened ability; really spectacular actually...

  • @AndlinW Well I hope so, it would be a shame if her voice had weakened. I can't say I like her new musical direction much though, her ego has led her to be rather self-indulgent and pseudy.

  • @sunbeam11 At some point in the distant future, when your "absolutely crystal clear" comments become clear to you, you'll be staring at a wall in the dark, wondering why you thought it would be crystal clear. You see, but you don't, that 'naive ideological arrogance' makes perfect sense. That you're not capable of understanding that has nothing to do with logic or knowledge and everything to do with maturity and reflection.

  • @Martel1946 I get it now, seeing your other comments, anyone who doesn't conform to your jejeune world view has to be some kind of nazi? It seems to me that you're the ideological bigot here. Natalie is often naive, looking down maternally at the world from her ivory tower, but you seem to be just some keyboard nutter. I have the new album, can't fault the lyrics of course, she didn't write them, but there are rather a lot of songs featuring tin whistles that could usefully have been edited

  • @sunbeam11 When you outgrow your juvenile childishness perhaps you'll actually learn to spell jejune correctly. I have to give you an 'A' for arrogance, though. Ah, the arrogance of ignorance must be such bliss.

Hint: see your doctor about that projection problem.

  • @Martel1946 The French is jeune (young).from whence the expression comes. Being bi lingual is bliss but sometimes it overrides my English spelling. Talking of which 'Juvenile childishness ' is odd, surely juvenile means childish and vice versa? E.g. ' black darkness' or am I going over your head here? As far as I know my projector is fine, should I check the bulb? E for Effort in using medical jargon from your self-help manual, but why project your problems onto me?.

  • @sunbeam11 Sorry, you're going over your head there. Juvenile and childish are not synonymous. Look them up, then think about it. Thinking will be a good exercise for you. Who knows, you may like it.

  • @sunbeam11 Your rather naive ideological arrogance seems to be garbling your words. Maybe if you would translate that into human language, it would make sense.

  • "if she lives till her tits sagged" LOL I love you Natalie

  • jack Kerouac was a poet ...

  • not her best versions but I love her anyway

  • te amo mujer tu eres perfecta, tu loquera es diamante

  • yeah i don't get it either, my self destructive personality only seems to draw people to me...i generally feel the need to flee from that much drama

  • Buck Drew Augustyniak Gustafson - The Best!!!

  • Couldn't understand a word she said.

  • lol, it's like, "The Emperor's New Clothes" by Hans Christian Andersen, nobody is supossed to admit they can't understand a word she says....nice song though I love it....hope it does have good lyrics.

  • i am hearing this girl since i was did not..i love this woman hope i could talk to her...and maybe she can do a liittlle reading..about..good things that never come

  • Classic. Voice of an angel here on Earth.

    RIP Robert Buck.

  • Great song. Love the Unplugged version....it goes out strong.

  • I wish she had kept his real surname,Mercante. Was it a shame for her!?

  • Why not "O'Shea"?

  • Why not Omar al Muktar?

  • Can you explain yourself better? It's interesting to me.

  • I mean about the popularity of your comment

  • what she say about the americans?

  • No surprise since her song writing is brilliant, but most PhDs tend to be a bit eccentric--okay crazy! Still love that voice!

  • Well you have to admit they do keep a VERY clean country!

  • shes beautiful

  • wow she sounds like alanis morrisette--when she speaks.

  • alanis song like her.

  • Her comments in the middle of this video about America being fascinated with self-destructive people are interesting in light of her song "River".

  • ebonics, don't you know anything?

  • I think what you are trying to write is that you would be amazed if you had ever had half a chance with any woman?

Well, since you are clearly only semi-literate, I would have to agree with you on that point. Still we can't all be handsome, charming, strong and hung like a stallion - I'm just lucky, son.

  • I am pefectly literate, thanks. Just typing fast because I was annoyed by your ignorant comment. Which I see you have removed so I guess I have made my point.
