I played BAK in the late 90's. I tried playing it before but the graphics forced me to delete in the first 10 seconds. I gave it another try a year or so later, and OH BOY. This is an all time classic. The story and gameplay are just sublime, if you manage to survive the graphics this is simply a super addictive title in my Top 100 of all times.
This game... looks amazing. Foaming... at the mouth.
In all seriousness, the way they did equipment, stats and skills in this game all seems, well, ingenious. Simplified in that it all seems easy to learn, but not lacking in, as you say, depth or customization. It seems to give the player just enough without bogging them down.
And any game that has a character who looks so much like Neil Patrick Harris in it is one I must own.
@epyonx1: It's the other way around. The story of the game is original and not written by Feist or based on any of his book, but after the game was released Feist wrote a book based on the story of the game to include the story in the Riftwar canon.
@Paddan1000: Really? Hmm. That makes it even more impressive. I thought the book gave the game depth but it's cool to know that the game itself had such a strong story line. Not too many games out there can say the same.
@PayQPayQ : yes. i live in a dumpster behind the starbucks and steal their internet to download old games. i should stop playing games and get a job but doing drugs and playing video games is too much fun.
I bought a copy of the book. It came with a free copy of the game. I already had a copy of the game, so I just bought it for the book. Good read. Fits in nicely with the rest of the books. I used to spend entire weekends playing this on a 486 computer.
Do you have any idea of the state of computer tech in 1993? 3D video cards were mostly limited to ultra expensive professional grade cards designed for CAD/CAM and not games. Most home users also had only a 386 or maybe a 486SX up to 33mhz tops with only a few megs of RAM. Pentiums were only just starting to be made and only rich folks could afford them. That's why the game lags.
This game needs a remake. Badly. Not the sequel though..... /lurch.

I dunno. I've been playing a lot of oldies lately but this one may be too primitive. The music and dialogue is impressive though.

@MurlockMage: The game was officially released as FREEWARE by Sierra. :)

That's how I first played it and found that it is based on just ONE of the books by the author, Raymond E Feist. :)

Honestly, i think they should port this game across to XBLA. XBLA really lacks good RPGs like this one.
