The reason why Morricone didn't win for his nominated "Bugsy" was because he cannibalised a track from his "Ogro" score for it thereby breaking the Academy's rule of "Best *ORIGINAL* Score". His nomination was withdrawn. Morricone, in disgust (with himself?) said he'd never work in Hollywood again. He did of course....and this was the best they could come up with. Shame.

While it is good that Morricone was finally recognised at the Oscars, it really doesn't matter much. The Oscars is a very shallow award ceremony, and its definition of what is 'the best' should definitely be taken with a huge grain of salt.

True artists exist and live far beyond the once-a-year farce that is the Oscars. Morricone's music is immortal and will still be remembered generations after the current, trendy Oscar films are forgotten. That means so much more than any reward ceremony.
