The good, bad and ugly music was truly an epic masterpiece... a man that truly deserves his award as much as obama didn't deserve his noble piece prize...
The reason why Morricone didn't win for his nominated "Bugsy" was because he cannibalised a track from his "Ogro" score for it thereby breaking the Academy's rule of "Best *ORIGINAL* Score". His nomination was withdrawn. Morricone, in disgust (with himself?) said he'd never work in Hollywood again. He did of course....and this was the best they could come up with. Shame.
he should have gotten an oscar along time ago. It's a shame that too tutti (many) great actors and musicians recieve oscars toward the end of their lives.
Eastwood speaks Italian. When he originally arrived in Italy prior to making the Spaghetti westerns, he did not speak Italian (nor did Sergeo Leone speak English). Now Eastwood speaks Italian, and Leone speaks English :)
@elitestar A stupid comment, actually. There are many great composers who deserve this accolade: Alex North, Hugo Friedhofer, Bernard Herrmann, Jerry Goldsmith.
@caravaggio31 What??? How can you compare Morricone to Herrmann, Bernstein, Goldsmith. They are all equals. But, companring Morricone to the likes of Horner and Zimmer is to insult Morricone.
Sorry, that is exaggerated, both are great composers, Williams is in no way inferior in talent i think, plus the movie music they wright is very different.
He should have definately won in 1966 for The Good, The Bad and the Ugly and he wasn't even nominated for it. What was the Academy even thinking? It's probably the greatest motion picture score ever written. If it was released this year it could have easily won an Oscar.
Who wrote the most famous musical motif of all time? Was it Beethoven with 'da da da daaaaaaaaaaaa', or Morricone with 'yah ah ah ah ahhhhhh, waa waa waaaa' ??? Interesting! The only thing more well known is probably 'Happy Birthday to you'.
Such fun watching all those inarticulate, illiterate, language-less American monkeys listening with confused expressions to the Maestro's Italian speech. He wrote sublime music for The Mission and Cinema Paradiso...and was not awarded Oscars for them. Shameful.
@philipc67 Come on man, an lot of Americans (especially in Hollywood) speak Italian very well. He is speaking to an audience full of some of the world's most successful film makers who are all educated, intelligent enough people. I only speak a little Italian but I understood most of it. And let's be honest, most oscar acceptance speeches are essentially the same anyway: 'I'd like to thank The Academy blah blah blah'!!
@philipc67 How correct you are. But, what do you expect of a country where the English language is massacred every second of every day. Dumb and dumber is what the ignorant Yanks are.
Ennio Morricone= genio. (Por un puñado de dólares, El bueno, el feo y el malo, Érase una vez en América, La Misión, Los intocables, Cinema Paradiso, Malena, Malditos Bastardos etc etc etc)
Look at the list of scores that did not win the Oscar. THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, PATTON, SUPERMAN, STAR TREK THE MOTION PICTURE, PSYCHO - the list could go on.

@nath909 ... good question, but I imagine that they'd met before. Morricone also compoased the score for the American Western "Two Mules for Sister Sara" (1970), produced by Eastwood's Malpaso Company (Eastwood, of course, starred in the film).
Damn, my first language being Spanish and having taken Latin in school for four years just payed off. I just realized I understand Italian almost perfectly. Rome, here I come!

Greatest and most veratile composer for movie music ever. You can see that this was very emotional moment for him and that almost made me cry. You must have emotions to compose such beautiful and out of this world music. Morricone, you're the greatest and we know that.
Cant believe they fed him scraps like this. Makes me sick to my stomach to see the greatest EVER receive what was deserved long before most of us were even born!
John Williams might have been nominated for a few dozen times, might have won 5 oscars, but he never composed "Il Triello". It is Morricone, who fully deserves to be called the best movie composer ever regardless of all these award hype.
Too bad the damn Academy never were smart enough to award him for the many scores he did when he was nominated. An honorary Oscar is not the same. Shame on the Academy for such an oversight.
Ennio Morricone doesn't need an oscar..it's just a piece of metal.Ennio has won millions of hearts through the years...that what it matters. We all love ENNIO MORRICONE.
I believe this award is for me not at a point of arrival, but at a starting point to improve myself – to improve myself in service of cinema, and also, also in the service of my personal aesthetics on applied music.
I dedicate this Oscar also to my wife Maria, who loves me very much and who has been so close to me all these years. I love her in the same way. This award is also for her."
""I want to thank the Academy for this honor they give me with this prize. I also want to thank all of those who strongly wanted this award to be given to me.
I also want to truly thank all of the directors who have called me, and trusted me, to write music for their movies. I really wouldn't be here if it weren't for them.
My thoughts also go to all the artists who deserve this award but haven't received it. I wish for them to receive it in a not distant future.
Quincy has put on weight.

And let me tell you that Zimmer has received only one oscar in all his career, (for the Lion King score), and the soundtrack is amazing. But I'm agree with you, Ennio Morricone is maybe the greatest composer ever, and it's unfair he never won an oscar before, but please be considerate of other talented composers, like Zimmer

Greatest and most veratile composer for movie music ever. You can see that this was very emotional moment for him and that almost made me cry. You must have emotions to compose such beautiful and out of this world music. Morricone, you're the greatest and we know that.

Cant believe they fed him scraps like this. Makes me sick to my stomach to see the greatest EVER receive what was deserved long before most of us were even born!

everyone present at the Oscar must kiss Morricone's ass.....
he is the best and he deserve lots of real Oscan not a fucking Honorary

John Williams might have been nominated for a few dozen times, might have won 5 oscars, but he never composed "Il Triello". It is Morricone, who fully deserves to be called the best movie composer ever regardless of all these award hype.

With or without Oscar, with or without "academy" Morricone leaving the most prominent mark in cinema music, there's no other.

Too bad the damn Academy never were smart enough to award him for the many scores he did when he was nominated. An honorary Oscar is not the same. Shame on the Academy for such an oversight.

This is what he said:
""I want to thank the Academy for this honor they give me with this prize. I also want to thank all of those who strongly wanted this award to be given to me.
I also want to truly thank all of the directors who have called me, and trusted me, to write music for their movies. I really wouldn't be here if it weren't for them.
My thoughts also go to all the artists who deserve this award but haven't received it. I wish for them to receive it in a not distant future.
