When I first heard this. while watching "Lady Sings the Blues".. I was a Pre- Teenager..So even though I felt the song inside my soul...I didn't understand the Magnitude of the Lyrics until i attended Black Studies in High School. It's very a very harsh look at American History. And always seems to take me back to the dark place..Great songs always seem to come from Tragedy..
@IceLanced You cannot deny the beauty of this song....Some of the most depressing songs in the world are the most touching...Maybe YOU should listen more because you're obviously missing the point of the whole song. kthxbai.
I heard this song for the first time 26 years ago, in deep dark north England. Where there were no Strange fruit! Yet for some reason I got it, and she became my icon, and still is. Haunting yes, in away, real in so many other ways that are still true today.
This is my favorite version so far. The simplicity of it makes it very pure, direct and vulnerable. Her voice is like a velvet knife cutting through the soul. Amazing.

quero chorar todas as vezes que eu ouço essa canção, triste pura e verdadeira, feita da mais pura agonia e sofrimento.
