GT1 cars, such as this Porsche 911 GT1 and also the Mercedes CLK LM (GTR), which flipped at Le Mans in 1999, had aerodynamic flaws that enabled "dirty" air coming from the car ahead to life the nose and then the underbody, sending the car soaring nose-first into the air. This same issue also plagued a BMW prototype at this very race (Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta) two years later in 2000.
