Thanks Mary for this wonderful song that many of us Vietnam vets adopted as their signature song of the Vietnam experience. It still bring an emotional lift to me each time I hear it and time and I seem to be transported back in time to this terrible episode in my life. RIP Mary.

When I was a child, my dad had to travel a lot since he's in the Army, so I often thought of this song when he had to leave.

Now I'm grown and enduring the bittersweetness of having a fiance living several states away, and this song's meaning has changed for me. :) It's truly timeless. RIP Mary.

@atfatw Mary was a fantastic and talented singer, her weight had no bearing on her singing. You never know the reason for people's weight gain. Stevie Nicks gained a lot of weight after doctors kept putting her on all these horrible medications. When she finally got off of them, she lost weight. Women are often given steroids and other drugs to battle certain illnesses and it causes weight gain.

I agree. I was stationed on Guam in 1973 and we didn't have much TV or radio but I had a small cassette tape player. I had a John Denver tape and a Peter Paul and Mary tape. I played them both so much, I think that I wore them out. Thanks Mary.

When I was drafted during the VietNam war, this song was a virtual theme song, it was sung countless times by g.i's before being shipped out. It brings back so many memories and is truly part of the sound track of my life. Mary - we will miss you so.

This was the first song I learned on guitar. My guitar teacher Dave started teaching me this song. He and his brother left for Viet Nam. The next week his younger brother of 4 started teaching me the rest of the song. His mother bursted into the room crying and told us never to play the song again. Dave never came back. She gave me his burial flag to cover my amps.
