@oleomilani Like Muddy Waters said, "you just don't get up and sing the blues. You have to have a particular thing in your soul". And Stevie Ray's popularity is mostly based on his race, cause he was good but please come on now. Although according to his fans he was the best blues man ever and bla bla bla .. Yeah, I said it!
Something tells me she learned a lot from listening to jazz cats play. She has a lot of jazzy inflections to her solos as opposed to being a straight ahead blues cat.
Are you serious oleomilani? I guess Lonnie Mack, myself, Ricky Nye, Derick Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Eric Clapton and many others can't play the blues because of their color? You don't know what your talking about. I'm sorry guys!
@Landmanproductions Listen, I know I was too hard, but I'm not trolling... Anyway, I really didn't like Ana Popovic. But it's not about the colour, it's about soul. Clapton is a blues godfather and Trucks is an astonishing slide player! I'm just a little tired of some white texan blues, like SRV, wch clearle influenced mrs. Popovic, I think it became a very annoying cliché...
what da hell...lovely song ..lovely voice..lots of feeling when singing..but she needs to get a lead guitarist.......it was awful to watch that solo.. however..she does have some strong pipes..and great legs i might add..
@jfmayer Ha Ha Ha...I have the same wish for either of my daughters (10 and 8). Least I can do is play my acoustic for them at bedtime. They get so bored so fast they are out in like 2 minutes.....Not before they ask if I could turn it down :-)
@dreganism ha ha. Hey I read you my friend. In my case she will probably be either scared having nighmares or wondering if her dad is from another planet........I play in the Frank Zappa style !
maybe its my computer, but that base player is not kicking in for me, which makes it hard for her to come across. I like her, though. I like her voice, her whole vibe. I like her legs and, yes, women could and should always be a part of the blues. Janice tore it up and this girl does too. I do like the way she chops it up (in her solo's) making it irratic, sorta unpredictable. I am going out to buy her album for sure. I hope she's on I-tunes.
@mikecosgrove I think in a court of law you could make a case that the guitar is both Fiesta Red and pink, but thanks for the clarification on the string break.
@MinkSnopes1 Thanks, I did check it out and you are right. I looked at another video that made me realize that Anna Popovic is a much much better guitarist than the video above indicates. I like her better as a rocker than as a blues artist but as the video at the link that follows shows, she has a lot of dimensions as a performer.
sorry...doesn't do it for me..if you're talkin' women blues guitarists, hook me up with laura chavea any ole day.. (I dig miniskirts, but I dig tone and soulfulness more)
@bluenotes001 "There is NO blues without soul, NO blues witbout feeling"
SOUL this and FEELING that. The bromidic use of those 2 words on YouTube is extremely vexatious to say the least. Just say her phrasing is off and we'll get your point.
@TheTranslator100 Better yet, they should just shut up. I know what you mean about the "soul/feeling police, but who is to say her "phrasing is off". Her phrasing is apparently what she wants to say, so for her, (and me, for the most part) it is "on". Apparently, her audience agrees. I read a comment by one of my favorite musicians about another once, that he "disagreed" with the other's phrasing. It made me laugh. Who cares if someone agrees, say your piece and ignore them.
@bluenotes001 Couldn't agree more. This is just one huge fiasco. There doesn't seem to be any ideas in the solo, no theme - just a collection of ill-fitting licks forced together even though they don't go. As for the pick scraping along the stings, that's a seriously nasty tone she got out of that beautiful guitar.
She playes the guitar with less heart than in her blouse... She also is not very accurate where it would be necessary. I had similar performances in my studio when the musicians were either bored to death or hopping mad. Maybe let's see and hear her in 10 more years...
she starts all her phrases on the beat, which is very plod rock. Hot jazz and blues phrasing is about making it sound like you are bee's dick ahead of the beat.
Saw her open for BB King in Germany. She was way better than she is in this video. The solo is terrible here - phrasing, rhythm, it's all lumped together. Her phrasing is often "off" though, especially with those fast runs. Still like her songwriting and her band is top notch (the guy on the B3 is a monster!).
Ecoutez elle a a un joli jeu délirant mais le batteur souffre; rythmiquement elle fait cavalier seul; ce n'est pas très bluesy comme attitude au sens classique, mais ça l'est de par le fait que c'est très rock n roll !
She can sing BUT she doesn't make musical sense on the guitar I have listened to a lot of 60's free jazz, 70's fusion, Indian music, classic blues etc.
She overplays, has crap feel, off phrasing , poor rhythmic intuition, not much in the vibrato department, spews out rote arpeggios and licks like some teenager who has discovered life outside of the blues scale..
@santanafan1964 Yes,she looks good in a short skirt but shut your eyes and her guitar playing is just not emotional or musical at all.She sounds like she is running through her book of licks at home , and has no idea when to play silence/ nothing for dramatic effect.
How much more sterile can you get? Nothing but "I got this this lick and this lick and this lick. Here they are all together." At least they had a B3 in the band.
This girl has a lot of talent and a lot of potential. I think she is at a crossroads with her voice. There are two signposts: one reads Janis Joplin and the other reads Amy Winehouse. Of course she will turn out to be herself only, but to me she seems to be leaning toward the Janis road. Personally I like the sound of Amy that I hear in her voice, . . . but ultimately she will be herself. I think it will be interesting to see what that turns out to be.
