The reason there were riots is that probably 40% of the people who attend University of Pittsburgh are from Philly or eastern PA. They were the ones rioting in the streets, not Pittsburghers. People in Pittsburgh don't give a shit about the Phillies.

Plus, as one guy from Pittsburgh told me about why he was rooting for the Phils: "Pennsylvania might as well have at least one viable baseball team. And it sure as hell ain't gonna be the Pirates."
Continuing: I also know a fair number of people from Pittsburgh who come here and also root for us, barring Philly and Pittsburgh facing each other. For them, Pittsburgh trumps all. I may see things differently, but I believe in rooting for my home state in general. And if our cities' respective teams face each other, I'll root for Philly over anyone, but if Pittsburgh wins, then I hope they can keep going and bring championships to PA.
I can actually agree in one case where it was the Eagles against the Patriots in the Super Bowl (didn't work out though). But I think I'd take even the Red Wings and Hossa to win another cup before the Flyers.

The Pirates and Phils play only a home-and-home now since we're in different divisions, and the Steelers and Eagles face each other only once every four years in the regular season due to our teams being in different conferences. I really don't feel a Philly/'Burgh rivalry since we hardly play each other.
There are those who live in Philadelphia and hate Pittsburgh and vice versa. There are also those who choose to root for the state of Pennsylvania in general, barring the two teams facing each other.

I wondered what it was like downtown. I figured Oakland was a little different because I know there are college students who are actually from the Philly area. Didn't think there were THAT many...or maybe they just want an excuse to flood the streets and party. Either way, I agree with what you said.
