I wish someone would have made a documentary shownig what goes into this kind of work. I REALLY wish someone would have gotten footage of how the HELL they cleaned all this up, with everything tweaked like that. I know it had to be a head scratcher and I would really like to see how they got it done. ALSO, you never get to see how much hard work is put in to crane work day by day. There's all kinds of SUCCESSFULL jobsites operating across America, but the public only remembers the accidents !!!
During the building boom in South Florida we had at least 10 similar construction accidents involving cranes too. Workers died in the constructions sites as well, but hardly anything changed around here regarding safety as a forest of construction cranes rose over the area. A major collapse at the City of Miami blockaded traffic for three days and the only thing people complained was being delayed to work instead of the death of a worker and the unsafe construction practices.
A climber tower crane ties in every 10th floor. This crane was tied in at the 3rd,9th and then was about to tie in at the 18th. The rig had already been raised or "jumped". The collar tie-in brace wasn't fully secure yet and slid down the lattuce tower like a knife slamming into the lower 2 collars and shearing those tie-in beems. You now have a free standing crane 300 ft in the air.The counter weights (80,000pnds of them) pulled the rig over. The operator, oiler and both riggers went with the rig.
If they climbed it before tying in then they went in the wrong order, for example a peiner sk-415 requires 6 tower sections (120ft) between tie ins and a max of 8 above the last tie-in (160ft), so if it was already tied in at the 9th, going to be tied in at the 18th, then the crane would have been another hundred feet above the last floor (likely 19 or 20) after climbing so if they werent tied in before they climbed... sad to say but thats human error
That bitch Lancaster and her subordinates are not up to the job. Everyone is building like crazy and you hear about Construction workers skilled and illegal aliens getting killed.
Almost took this video down this morning. Why you ask ? Because I was feeling guilty about it.
However, If this video motivates someone to make changes so that this never happens again then its worth keeping up. Call your representatives, ask for an investigation and reform.
Should probably wait and see in there is a need for legal reform before that. If there are existing regulations that were violated, the focus should be on enforcement. Why create redundant laws, just to let people "feel" like they did something?
How ironic....I always look above my head in NYC when passing cranes...and yesterday around Columbia U did the same thing and came home to hear about THIS in the news! This just confirms my instincts as far as I'm concerned...freakin NYC constructing unsafely everywhere!
I don't think THAT'S true...it's just that sometimes a culture that's soooo consumed with development at the behest of caution suffers accidents once in a while. I look skyward because one never knows what day that accident might happen!
when you involve irish building companies especially here in london their are always accidents like this going on every week

Best video on the Web of this sad accident.
You can figure out how the mast toppled, and then the job and control cabin fell into the backyard between the streets.
There was just one crane, despite the understandable uncertainty of the narrator.
Thanks for posting this footage, unedited.
