The way the Dude sings the Jingle has never left my memory. A very Classic commercial, Retro is cool and Levi's Rock. Too Bad they moved production over seas. Makes it hard want to buy them anymore. Mixed feelings on an "American" Classic. (Frown face)
When this came out, those kid-actors were a little older than I was and I wanted to be just like them . . . so I've always bought Levis. Period. Mission accomplished through a cool jingle (thanks, Bill Ckeyhole!) claymation and stop-photography (seemed so cutting-edge at the time!) Nice! Never noticed the phallic undertones until now!
@archangle81 Excuse me! We are STILL in the 20th Century! I am That70sMan and I am here to save your soul! I will equip you with a pair of lime green bellbottoms and a green floral shirt, with a pair of Pedwin two tone platfomr shoes, so you can look as kool as me! Dig it?!
@70sman4ever Um, sorry, but we left the 20th century behind about 10 years ago. Please update your calendar appropriately. Thank you, and have a nice day.
@Rognik Hey buddy, go out to your nearest train station and jump when you see the train coming! By the way, the calendar was invented by some dumbass who didn't know that we are really 35 years behind! Dig THAT to your grave!
@Rognik Plus, we are still using 20th century technology and ways of living. I won't be convinced otherwise until I see a Jetson's flying mobile. Peace out!
@sutjas16 That great ape is totally wearing bells. You don't think his legs are really shaped like Gumby's. Too bad they're in some beige-like colour.
This would work to today because it has a more catchy, innocent impression which is the opposite of "MTV style" today's consumer has grown accustomed to.
That explains why many commercials of yesteryear are more remembered than those of today.
In the ad world this is known as a "soft sell," in which no direct appeal is made to the consumer to buy the product. Rather, the ad seeks to create a connection in the viewer's mind between Levi's and fun/creativity/youth/hipness. To attempt to create this connection directly, by plainly asserting it, would be the opposite of "hip." In other words, it wouldn't work.
This was played through out the 1970s

Is it me or is there is something vaguely Freudian about the Building turning into a banana.

Excellent. Why are all the 60/70's ads so much better than the over-manufactured graphic-mad images of today's? Can't life be simple again?
