Many thanks for taking the time to make such a fantastic tutorial. I've just managed to make my own supported spindle using Fimo for the whorl and a length of dowel. But it'll take me a while to get anywhere near your standard - you make it look so easy and effortless!
Your demonstrations are always a good learning experience. How many spinning tools do you have? Because I had never heard of the African bead spindle;)
Hmmm, do I have to answer that? Try searching for this term 'Lhamo spins more' in YouTube (tried to give the link, but my reply disapeared), have you see one of those before? I have that kind too, but don't think I'm any where near as good as Lhamo on it!
My latest toy (when I get time to have a play!) is a stylus for my Suzie wheel, looks like it will be fun!
I got a local woodturner to make mine for me. It isn't a big job, so it shouldn't be too expensive. You need to say that you want the sides to slope in to a dip in the middle (imagine a reversed cone shape) rather than a bowl shape. This is the best shape as your spindle will always sit right in the centre of the dish. If you send me your email address, I can send a photo of mine for you take along for someone to copy.
I really think that your video is a very useful tool for beginners like me. I have one problem - my supported spindle has a hook at the top, not a notch and I'm not sure how to secure the fiber. Should I use a leader?
Mine is just a smooth shaft tapered to a point. You can do it either way, tie a leader on down by the whorl and spiral the yarn up the shaft and let it catch in the hook at the top, or just fluff out a few fibres catch them in the hook and give it a twirl, as soon as you get a little length of thread push it down the shaft and you have a leader anyway!
Fantastic! I've been searching all day for someone to show me how to spin on a supported spindle. Thanks for giving such clear instruction!

Thank you for such a great demonstration! I have one of these spindles but where can I find one of those bowls? Love it!
