How would The RODE NTG-2 work recording dialogs of three actors in the middle of a concert, they would be acting and sepaking among the crowd and the music very loud. The cam would be Sony Z7.
Do you have a extra mix on the acoustic guitar? The sound from it is very clear and crisp. I just can't believe that the Rode NTG2 on a boom could get such results. I'm a wrong?
@HyperColours Straight RODE NTG-2 shotgun right into the camera. The broadcast camera (Panasonic HPX500) has really clean pre-amps. We were also quite shocked at how well the mic and camera performed together - great combo.
Was that the mic used the entire time? or was it the on board during the interview? I think her voice sounded very hollow and tin like, but then great during her song? You could eq those bad frequencies out but that's a lot of extra work.
@Lucifer9387 They had the boom in the shot so you could see how close the microphone was, relative to the signal source. But go on with your interesting story and everything.
@wonderwall135 Thanks for asking. The RODE NTG-2 is plugged directly into a broadcast camera. The model is the Panasonic HPX500. This camera has great built-in pre-amps. Most cameras have poor pre-amps so a field mixer would definitely help to acquire this type of sound. It starts with the mic, but to get the best sound, you need a good mixer, and a good recorder or camera with decent pre-amps. Hope this helps!
This sounds great! Im in the market for a mic kit. I need to put purchase one/put one together within the next few weeks. Do you guys offer any discounts on package deals? (mic, shock mount, zeppelin, boom pole, cable, etc). I went to the website, but didnt see any special deals or any superb offers. Amazon runs about the same price you guys do, but they have package deals. Id like to avoid buying everything in pieces/individually if possible.
@jasonwbaca Great! Your best bet is to give us a call at 1-877-353-8077 and we'll put together a package for you. The best selling package is the one in the "info" link above. It's $499 for the NTG-2, 10' Boom pole, SM3 shockmount, K-TEK wind muff and Audio Technica XLR cables. Use the coupon code "youtube" and you'll save even more!
@TomasCimma Yes, you'll want a high quality recorder to get the best sound. Ideally, a field mixer in front would sound even better. This sample was direct into a high-end professional Panasonic HPX500 broadcast camera via XLR.
Notice the clarity and richness of sound in both speech and music applications, and notice the wind on her hair as she sings, and no wind noise at all!!! A real Asset for Rode mics this NTG2 ...Not just a great mic for the money, but simply a great MIC...regardless the low price, you can compare it with AKG C568B or others similar any day of the week...
love the real world situation recording and the visible wind - wonderful quality of her singing. A bit muffled in the beginning with her speech, but still very decent.
Can we assume that this is with the sm3 shock mount?
I'm about to buy a microphone for my filming, But unfortunately, can't spend a lot. I was in for the NTG2. At the moment, I all ready have the RODE pole and shock mount. (am operating on an other mic) Asking some people, I've been told, that RODE mics have the problem of making noises when they are moved. Every single small hit on the pole, will affect the mic. And obviously I don't want this. Is there any solution? Or maybe a mic which is ideal for this stuff at low prices.
@xonkarate The RODE Blimp would be ideal as the bands are much stiffer and positioned in a manner as to suspend the mic in mid air without it being able to twist and bounce around. The less expensive SM3, SM4, SM5 shock mounts will translate bumps and other noises if you're not careful.
@xonkarate Congratulations on getting the NTG-2! It's fast becoming one of the world's most popular shotgun microphones. There is a low-cut switch to provide bass roll-off. Simply flip the switch and it will cut out the low end sound.
@xonkarate it's normal you heard lot's of bass. you have a -10db pad on your microphone. you must swich it, It decrase the bass frequencies of 10db. It better to use the -10db pad on the microphone, than on editing process, because you win a beach of wider dynamique.
@xonkarate lol, you're funny. -10db is for recording voices without plosives, (nondistant person). Ok guys..i have an hv20...bought the ntg 2 with an xlr adapter and even if im about half a foot away from the object im getting the sound from, it's still very quiet, is it the xlr adapter, or did I get a bad mic because its not loud at all...i also have a boompole wih it.
Which XLR adapter? Is the attenuation (volume level) up? Are there fresh batteries in the mix or XLR adapter (if needed). You should be getting great levels from half a foot away.
so what camera were you using because i have a canon hv40 and it doesn't have a xlr plug in but i know you can get adapters from xlr to the mic plugin that will fit my camera but doesnt that lose quality?
I prefer to use a blimp, however in this example we're just using the slip over fuzzy that is in the DVcreator Location Sound package to demonstrate how effective this kit can be. See the more info to get a better description.
i;ve seen u guys talk about taping off a "switch" for better results...can u be more specific. cuz wind is getting into my system and i;m having less than satisfactory results...so i;m wondering if that is the cause. what "switch"...where iz it?
The is a bass roll off "dip switch" near the base of the mic, it's a good idea to put a piece of tape over it if you are going into a windy location, also consider taping the actual XLR connection...or just invest in a RODE blimp, we've got them on special if you give a call and mention this video on youtube. 1-877-353-8077
This video makes the mic so good, but all other videos i've seen using this mic, the audio is terrible, any input? and if it's even really worth it to invest in this mic?
Look at how the mic is positioned. In the other videos you have seen was the mic properly placed like this? Also keep in mind that the NTG-2 is feeding directly into a full sized Broadcast Camera. Other camera models may not have pre-amps this clean. Recording to a $300+ separate recorder would sound even better!
you need the mic to be positioned as close as possible to the guitar.
an even better but impractical solution would be to put lapel mics on both the performer and one inside the sound hole of the guitar. that would get you some ultimate sound but the setup time would be attrocious.
I already have a NTG-2. I thought your windscreen you got is amazing. Can you please tell me what is the model. I read the desciption so i know it's a KTEK Fuzzy windmuff but can i have the model number. And the model # that you give me is that the one you really used. Thank you. The K-TEK and the WS6 block wind equally well. One is not much better than the other in real world testing. You may want to put a piece of tape around the switch though - fast moving air can be heard through there.

Yes, in this video you're hearing ONLY the RODE NTG-2 shotgun. We recorded a Countryman B6 lav on another track. You can see at :22 she crosses her arms across the lav - the track is muted or you'd hear the clothing rustle. I'm positive that the Azden does not sound this good. The NTG-2 outsells the Azden by far.
