  • @exzealient : I like em even more now.....Scottland fighting lion forever

  • I think you will find The Waterboys have had English , Irish , Welsh, American and Scottish musicians in their various line ups. there is very little room for bigotry in music. spread the love... xoxox

  • @123ruffy Mike Scott is a genius...

  • @123ruffy perfectly said, man!

  • I think the Waterboys are Scottish, but that's alright. The Scots are cousins to us Irish. We both have the same attitude towards our friends the English.

  • @guyfihi what part of ireland you from? when i was growing up the people of sligo hated the scots as well. As 123ruffy say's there is no need for bigotry in music.......

  • wow this is sooooo good!

  • The best waterboys song ever......it reminds me when I was 17, drinking cider with my whole life ahead of me! What great memories

  • is that forrest gump on drums? lol jk great song

  • messi33 makes a good point. I emphasise that I was posing a question about the subjunctive, and I know that English usage has more or less outdated that rule/formation. In any case, Fisherman's Blues is a jolly song. I await the next stage of Mike Scott's evolution/progress through the musical landscape (a rather long wait, it seems).

  • @Kinokiddo you need to get out more

  • @franmol01 You won't hear from me for a while: I'm going out for a long walk.

  • The mando part is always cool to play...great song to get people of all ages up dancing

  • One of my favourite songs of all time. Just amazing.

  • Surely it should be "I wish I were..." A highly literate poetry-lover should know that. Or perhaps I am wrong on that grammatical point.

  • Pan Within is an excellent track, as is Be My Enemy.

I saw them twice on the Fishermans tour, I 've never seen this clip before and its brought it all back

  • Greetings from Manila. From where I come from The Waterboys will always be remembered for The Pan Within. Sadly, only a handful would remember this great song which is also the title of their great album in 1988 which Time magazine had picked as one of the most notable releases for that year.

  • I see dead people in the audience. If I were there - I would've climbed that stage and danced myself to unconsciousness. Such a great song and such a powerful performance!

  • @malfunction011 I think the same thing, that red neck crowd didn't deserve what they got.

  • WOOHOOOO. That rite there makes me soul happy

  • Sometimes, people just do things just because it is the right thing to do, ... this was one of those times, ... and we are blessed because of it.

  • Up there with Barry Maguire's "Eve of Destruction" as one of the most touching songs of its decade.

  • What year was this? I really like this music. Where the fuck was I back then?

  • @oldmtnfart LOL! sometimes i ask my self the same q! main thing is that someone was sharing this with us! cheers!

  • @oldmtnfart LOL, i ask myself that question by time to time, the mainthing however, is that someone was there and now sharing it with us! cheers

  • Wakey Wakey Neddie!!!!!

Love this song as into to ned devine...... I pegged yaz for bob dylan.... I will buy some of your "stuff"

  • great video from the waterboys !Thanks

  • den kan jeg høre på mange ganger, den melodien er flott.............

  • @oahalvo

I wish I could speak your language good sir. I'm studying at TCD next fall taking a bunch of courses on Joyce and it'd help to know Irish. The Waterboys have inspired me and I often look out towards the Aran Isles and wish I could fly

  • Yeh uk album release of Fishermans Blues was !988....But the band had been playing festivals in Ireland long before the release of this lp ..With various line ups including if I remmember right Sharron Shannon at a Galway Gig in !985

  • Maybe there were machine guns trained on the "audience" and if they moved they were mown down?

  • at 0:55 - what instrument is that?

  • @robertjoyce95 mandolin

  • you're a twit.

  • Flippin' heck, Anto had hair once upon a time. Nice gent. Very quiet. Wonder if the Docs have ever worked this into a medley with N17? Same speed, same dominant instrument present (mandolin). Would rather hear that than another version of "Hay Wrap" that goes on ad nauseum, much as I love the Docs.

    This is brilliant though.

  • omg i love them sooooo much....:0)

  • sound love it always have :).x

  • a real irish song it reflects both sadness and the want of a better life so full of passion and heart just like the the true irish man thats in us all listen to the words folks ....... i will be that fisherman .......ahhhhh i love bein from ireland just because of the music

  • perfect!

  • @elmundodepiku That's the same word that came to my mind.

    Just simply perfect.

  • fantastic band, loved em from the 80's when I first herd them.

  • Think the album was released uk in 1985

  • no, that's this is the sea. this was 88 or 89, I'm not quite sure becuase this was all before i was born

  • Does anyone know what year this was released in the UK charts?

  • @sljf555

    I think it was '87 or '88.

  • Thanks!

  • The Fisherman's Blues album was released in 1988, so this TotP is probably from that year. They played the song live atleast two years earlier, though.

  • A beauty of a song...thanks for posting it

  • This song makes me shiver each time I hear it. Wonderful!

  • *sigh*

  • I agree with you, mafrick40205, I totally agree with you.

  • Top 10 ever songs.....

  • great band, great song, heard them first on a college radio station, I guess they didn't fit any 'format' on radio.

I would love to hear them live

  • I saw them live. Best ever!

  • @McGillicuddy1 I would give my right arm to see them, come to Texas buds...................bought their cd's a while b ack, heard them on a college radio, I guess they don't fit any format....

  • Me too! Holy smoke, Mike Scott is mesmerizing. This song is amazing and I could listen to it a thousand times over. In fact, I think I have.

    xo Gypsy

  • I am still in awe of this song whenever i hear it,not to many songs can do this for me.Just a great band and song:)

  • I agree fuck that crowd... Everytime I hear this song I can't stop my feet from stromping... Great passion

  • absolute perfection. legend has it that in bantry in west cork, ireland, on saturday nights they used to play this song last at three in the morning, many of the patrons would have been fishermen and would have been going out (probably still drunk) only 4 or 5 hours later to the atlantic, probably humming this as well. thanks lads, honourary irishmen.

  • such a magical song!and such a great band!

  • "Like a cannon in the rain!"

  • I heard this for the first time when i was 19 and i still love it. So much passion, soul and thought all in one song. Its magic and haunting at the same time, will always be on my ipod!!!

  • This is one of the most powerful and amazing songs I have ever heard in my life. Thank you, Waterboys - you have enriched my soul.

  • @silkwood658 mine too !

  • I agree! This song speaks to me for some reason

  • don;'t know why they keep pulling this clip. if they sold a dvd with this in it, i'd buy it! a young michael scott -- so impassioned. Mikey--you're only young once and you were so compelling! what a gift you gave us -- "a night tha's full o soul"

  • Yes, the crowd were pretty much fashion victims of the day, and didn't know how to respond as the band were not particularly favored by the music and fashion journals of the day. the Waterboys were not very trendy at the time, and were never about trends but about the music.

  • @123ruffy were you the drummer if so nice drummin and great song

  • fuck that crowd.

    So ungrateful.

  • I watched them once on Pinkpop Holland 1987. Crap they were good!! One of the songs they played was "A girl called Johnny" truly amazing.

  • very Fantastic... está canción la escuche por primera vez en un verano del año 1993 la grabé en un cassette y pasaron 14 años para volver a escucharla y verla en Youtube...es mi canción de culto...

  • Having lost 3 friends who were fishermen, to the sea, this song is all the more poignant to me... thank you for it...

  • Great live performance - very much as I remember it from '88 in Washington D.C. at Constitution Hall. What a band and a show! One of the Top Five concerts I have ever seen!

  • Classic, beautiful song, one of my all time favourites. Those people watching that live are very lucky.

  • nice one thanks top tune
