@Delroxorz Consider the intent of the movement and also other applications of that movement to expand sai training. A punch with a sai's pommel has the same *intent* as a one-knuckle punch. Pulling back the arm from a block is the same *movement* as grabbing and pulling in someone's arm. Think: "How can I replicate this attack?" and also think "What else can this movement be used for?" The first shows a reason to train in these weapons and the other shows the value of kata to teach secret moves.
The sai isn't practical because you're not going to be carrying them with you unless you're on your way to/from the dojo. If you have sai with you normally, you're clearly expecting trouble which means you should rethink why you're going out at all. A roll of quarters or a pen is a more practical weapon because they are inconspicuous and subtle. If you see someone with a pair of sai, you're going to be on guard, but a pen or a roll of change? Perfectly normal to carry and easy to overlook.
This idiot needs to quit saying this weapon is not practical, the sai is one of the most diverse weapons i can think of and other then a fight with a gun the sai if used properly would win and even if your opponent had a gun once disarmed then your on top. Sick of these TMNT and Elecktra wannabes trying to teach people techniques and using words like "Nob or sharp pointy end" to teach
you should be more supportive of the yellow belt. He got the motivation to get off the couch and start taking a martial art (or any physical activity really). He could be home watching Loony Tunes or something less productive.
How are sai not practical? I mean... They don't cut, but they are small, concealable, versatile, and effective in close quarters. If practicality is the case, then isn't the only practical weapon a gun?
Look man... 60% of Americans are overweight... I guess that applies to karate instructors. This guy looks like he's been focsing more on McDonalds than Martial Arts.
That right there is a bit funny. You have a blunt strike point, 3 sharp stabbing points and an extended metal tine for striking.
Also, you have the ability to strike with the main tine, then follow up stab wih the guard tine in the same motion, for example into the neck or thigh.
Then also, a well made pair of sai is balanced for throwing and, at short distances, is heavy enough to knock someone down even if the weapon doesn't hit "properly"
agreed, also as opposed to what? a bow staff which everyone walks down the street with? or a pair of nunchuks? how about any weapon? how practical are any of them, the sai is a very good weapon and excellent for defence.
Take a sword for example. If your attack is dodged or deflected, you simply turn your wrist a little and attack again from whatever angle you want. To attack again with the sai, you have to pull your arm back again, because it's only useful for stabbing attacks, the elbow strike, and disarming yourself. (and the behind the head maneuver but that leaves you wide open while you get into position)
However, it seems to be excellent for defense and parries.
lol you would never think that he knows how to kill you with a sai !

Traditional Sai are blunt weapons. Sai that are commomly seen in movies, like Elekta, are more parry daggers than sai.

a sai is not good only for a stab it could also cut with the sharp tip in the end although it would take a very precise slice to do that
supajero 2 years ago
The end isn't that sharp. At best you'd give the opponent mild rugburn if you were lucky enough to hit an exposed area.
(if you made the middle prong into a blade, that's no longer a sai, but a parrying dagger or something along those lines.)
Ryzer19 2 years ago
The sai is a bludgeoning weapon... I think you should compare it to an escrima stick before a katana....
You can still swing it and "slash" with it... You're just not gonna really cut anything with it (which isn't what a sai is for anyway, right?)

thanks i just bought a pair of sais
