  • you shoulda demoed the coated ones aswell!

  • why sitting on a mixer?

  • maybe thats why my drum sounds VERY BAD!!! im such a noob.. im changing into proper reso heads now! coz the reso heads im using was the previous batter heads of my drum.. I SUCK!

  • i'm thinking of using power centers for reso. i know that they shorten sustain when you use it, but the thing is if i might get a really different sound on floor toms since 13-18 sizes are 12 mil. have anybody experimented with that?

  • I think old Bob likes the fellas. He's a goofy S.O.B. but he knows his shit. I have to say it, he could be the black sheep brother of Dr. Oz. Who's that? Search it and see. Twins right down to the speech impediment. Bonkers.

  • I like the 7 mil one the best, I like very little resonance.

  • Dude just sitting all on the mixer lol...

  • @secondshen exactly what i was thinking

  • i have that ec reso and it is insanely low my lowest tom sounds like an earthquake and it has a very defined attack if at any time you think you need your reso's replaced even if you have remo's on top get these heads you want more lo end and punch? BUY THESE HEADS ( ec2 reso's)

  • I <3 Bob, but the information in this video - and on the Evan's website - is confusing at best. In all the information I've ever absorbed (and by my ear), a thinner head with less mass is easier to excite and vibrates faster AND longer, thus resulting in greater sustain. You could use a triangle example to illustrate this: A thinner triangle, with less mass, will ring out longer than a thicker triangle. Would love to hear others' thoughts...

  • @sp3ci4lkpo i think your exactly right i see this very often and i would think that if you want more punch and attack and less overtone and sustain you would use a two ply head on both reso and batter so what im really trying to say is im still a bit confused and honestly once again im starting to get tired of saying this but it all comes down to preference but once again just to clarify i am agreeing with you and thankyou for saying what iv'e been trying to say for very long

  • @SuperGilbs Thanks, SuperGibs. I'm not saying I'm right, of course, but I'm going by what I learned in physical science and common sense. :) To my ears, two single-ply heads produce a more resonant, sustained tone with slightly less attack and an overall more "open" sound. On the other hand, double-ply heads on the batter sides usually results in a more controlled, darker sound with more attack and a less "open" sound.

  • @sp3ci4lkpo very much so

  • @SuperGilbs Would be nice to see Bob or an Evans folk chime in... :)

  • Soundboard!!!!!! My dad would kill me!!! Well he is a drummer I guess he don't know not to sit on that equipment...

  • Hes sitting on the mixing board!!! get off of that!!!

  • Best overall combo? g2 clear top and g1 clear bottom. There is absolutely NO reason to dampen your drums whatsoever. The whole point is to have the drum RESONATE. Exception is the kick though. (For my personal tastes..) If you want to hear a WIDE variey of Evans heads, go to my page and browse around. Make sure you use headphones.

  • it bugs me so bad that he is SITTING on the console! get off that thing man!

  • On this video the 7 mil Resonant sounds best to me, the EC Resonant has a boooing sound with a pretty obvious downward pitch bend.

  • Is that a pair of Genelec 1031A's on the console?

  • WE <3 BOB GATZEN!

  • bob i thought the ec-reso was supposed to have short sustain?

  • i like how hes just sitting on his equipment

  • Does adding resonant heads make that much of a big difference in the sound of the drums? Right now i'm using Remo Coated Ambassador as batter and the tama superstar stock drum heads as the resonant...Some help and advice would be appreciated.

  • @zobomobo Ya, it's true. When I first started out about 9 years ago, I never even considered changing the reso's. I finally started studying drums more as I became more passionate about drumming. Long story short, I use evans g2 as batter heads (top) and evans g1 as my resonant heads (bottom). After I did this, then fine tuned all my drums, they sounded so much more full and deep. I stopped using dampening after this because I found that my drums sounded better, with full tone and depth.

  • Bobby G, drumming badass. Oodles of intense studio recording equipment.. and then the 1990's CRT Monitor to top it off! Its like $100 worth of groceries in a .2 cent sack..!

  • cannot stand that guy's voice.

  • you didn't show the genera resonant, i was looking at it to match my hydraulics so i could have attack and sustain? or someone even recommended G2s. any advice?

  • all of them sound like crap to me

  • EC Reso ftw.

  • I like the sound of the 7mil Clear "Resonant"

  • there's a diff in sound when he taps each of the resonance head and when he plays it after mounting it. i think that's where its confusing

  • i feel ec-reso has litle sustain though the tone is nice

  • always great! thanks bob for every your lesson!

  • I still hear a ringing with the EC-Reso.

  • I wouldn't say anything bad about Bob. He's an awesome drummer! lol

  • i hate how people use such random terms to describe sounds... that makes the drum sound warm, this gives it a dry sound... idk etc like its all just random adjectives... makes the drum sound "Brighter"

  • Hey Bob,

What Evan's resonant head would you recommend to put under Evan's EC2 batter heads?

  • Hey Bob,

What Evan's resonant head would you recommend to put under Evan's EC2 batter heads?

  • Bob, which one that you use on this video, G1 or G1 Resonant?

  • i love ec2 with g-1

  • @Andee90x yeah man.. ill change mine with that

  • he's a great drummer and this video is very informative but his voice and demeanor crack me up haha

  • Bob, I love the way your drums sound. Can you recommend pitches for my toms? I have a 70's Gretsch 9x13 and 18x16 (that's 18 deep x 16 diameter - and very difficult to tune). Emperor batters/Ambassador reso's. Thanks!

  • Great video of real-life comparisons. More of these "compare" videos would really help those of us looking at the differences in sound.

  • Thats a good mixer his sitting on but Bobs a small guy he knows what hes doing.

  • I looked into Guitar Center for a few EC Resos. But I could not find anything online or in the store for my 16" ='(

  • well that sucks, but don't get too bummed. Bigger drums sometimes require a different approach.

  • DUDE, your good as a drummer, sounds great, but get your ASS OFF of the damn mixer !!!!!!! You don't sit on a mixer, apparently it belongs to you, because the engineer would be stomping a mudhole in your butt by now.....

  • love his kit!

  • Hahaha he tunes them so high that they ALL sound awful! Completely unacceptable for any thing other than Jazz!

  • Wow you`re tuning those toms tight!

    But I love your vids!

  • my perfect sound in EC2 over Remo Ambasador. :)

  • Sold me! Huge difference...and I've been needing some new heads. EC2 over ECResos for me!

  • i just got ec2 sst's today. put them over my ec reso's and :O

    amazing

  • The Evans website describes the EC resonant having very short sustain and very low pitch.

Yet, on this video the EC resonant has the longest sustain of all! I'm confused.

  • I noticed the same thing.

  • @MadJazz81 i disagree... its pretty much the same as the g1.. except lower.. idk..

  • joeyhoeyca,

do you tell that from personal experience or from listening to this video? You don't seem very confident.

  • @MadJazz81 from personal experience, its pretty much unnoticeble, unless comparing side to side... like in this video, i could tell more.. not really worth the extra dough tho.. imo.

  • @MadJazz81 I came back to this video because I was wondering the same thing.

  • @MadJazz81 i think it's because with the EC head, he tuned the batter and reso heads exactly the same, whereas with the other two, the resos were slightly lower in pitch... i'm not sure though :P

  • @MadJazz81 they are speaking about the batter I think

  • @MadJazz81 In this vid its clear.... due to dampning its got a lower fundamental pitch and longer sustain.

Lower frequencies equal great sound waves ;) higher equal little. Little goes faster. big goes slower.

    Pure sound stuff.

  • @MadJazz81 if you tighten it up alot it has much resonance but it's very low and has a ton of attack and punch

  • @MadJazz81 yeah i know, but these are nice heads ive used them for ages, because the vibration from the edge is taken away so the middle vibrates hense you get a much more focused sound the head vibrates more becuase its thicker, perfect in my opinion lots of resonance but only for a short time when you have everything tuned and your playing with other people the ec reso sounds like its discribed, try them. Do you play evans by the way?

  • EC reso = epic win

  • oh my goodness. he's sitting on a really expensive sound board in the beginning

  • oh man bob, every time its an inspiration to see yout vids: The new Ec-Reso seem to be really a good and great idea.

    My question:

I didn't like 2-ply-batter heads, the sound good behind the set, but 4 meters standing before the set, they often sound slappy and dead. So i like 1ply much better. Will the pro's of the Ec resos work with a 1ply - perhaps an ec1 or g1 or g+ - as good as with an ec2 ?

Tx and keep on working in the name of "the sound"

    See

  • would coated g2's over ec reso's be too dead? it would it be really short, but with a full tone?

  • can u use any drum head/skin for a resonant head or are they spesificaly designed to be for the bottum of the drum???????

  • it shouldn't matter - John Bonham used coated ambassadors - most use clear ambassadors, there is no right or wring, but try to stick with one-ply on the bottom

  • no he didnt. he used coated EMPERORS.. not ambassadors...

  • well it really just depends. the heads on the bottom of the drum are usually are thinner and like the guy said in the video if your heads are too thick on the bottom they will sustain too much. so u want the batter heads to b thicker and the resonant heads to be thinner. so you want to buy heads that are specifically labled "resonant". so hope i helped!!!
