It is just as well that it fades out before the end. What more stops could he add? I must say, the tutti on this organ is horrible; not what Widor had in mind at all. No wonder the German audience just sits in disbelief.
This reminds of the Pierre Cochereau performance in NDdeP, recorded on the Philips label in 1973. Different organ, different player, but the spirit is the same: technically excellent, full of energy and quite deliberately fast. Shame the final page isn't there though!!
MAN, i want to hear the whole piece.......
AND LIVE ; )

again, played too fast...
very few people seem to realise that the power of this Toccata and also Boëllmann's is in a very modest choice of tempo!!

The selection of these stops is great and fantastic!!!

First I think it's a little bit too fast (for me). Where is the whole toccata? :(
The organ is very nice. He used many stops at last. I like it but it isn't the best performence here.

Varnus is very technically proficient. Watch his Franck at Sulpice.

Nice performance! Much better than v=Vo82Vnd_Kr4 in any case.

much too loud in the middle part!

Definetly! It is marked as pianissimo, after all.

nice video, nice performance, but only two questions:
-why the "vintage" style?
-why filming Mr. Varnus looking high, clearly NOT when playing?
nedopisa 3 years ago
I don't understand what you mean by 'looking high', do you mean the part where it shows his face and he looks up?
codeman2008 3 years ago 2
He means at 2:00.
But what is meant by "vintage" style?
Why is the whole toccata not here?
Thank you.
