Iraq and Iran were fighting over the Persian Gulf before Desert Storm. Saddam invaded Kuwait so the US moved in to protect the entire region (not just Israel and Saudi Arabia) from IRAN. If the USA left, Iran would move in..that's why NATO is in Afghanistan too, we are isolating IRAN.
