I've seen Voices of Liberty a handful of times and they're always amazing. What a beautiful rendition of a beautiful song! Wish I could have heard it live!
i absolutely loved this but i kept expecting them to pick the temo up for a verse. keept me on the edge of my seat the whole time and wanting more. i still want more!
Haha the costumes are because they perform in the American Pavillion at The EPCOT Center (also known as EPCOT to youngins) :-) Anyone working in American pavillion have to wear a certain style costume to keep everyone in theme together.
When they perform elsewhere (such as the event at Magic Kingdom this past July where a large group of immigrants received their citizenship papers) they dress in more modern clothes to fit with their songs. :-)
Nice voices, and nice costume, though I found it jarring to find modern arrangements with period clothing...but I'm just a wierd old Living History person so what do I matter...
Tis true. But "Simple Gifts", while frequently associated with Copland because of the melody's presence in the Appalachian Spring Suite, was originally a Shaker hymn.
@singurheartout4 How is being Jewish, Communist, and homosexual "quintessentially American?" I LOVE Copeland's music passionately. I could listen to Fanfare for the Common Man and Appalachian Spring a million times and never grow tired of them, but to say that the man himself is quintessentially American is a stretch and a fallacy. Perhaps his music, but the man himself, no. Again, I love his music. Also, I have nothing--NOTHING--against homosexuals or Jews. I'm not a huge fan of communism...
@singurheartout4 I assure you, my mind is plenty opened. Demographically, however, most citizens of the U.S. are heterosexual gentiles... You're point is valid, but I don't think your initial comment made it clear. You did say "things" rather than "people" though, so perhaps I was wrong to take your comment as meaning the man himself is quintessentially American rather than his music.
@snoopster2009 - perhaps you're thinking too narrowly here, which IS quintessentially american! I never even knew he was gay until a few hours ago, at the same time I leaned McCarthy's crappy committee found him NOT to be communist, yet the mere questioning caused his 1953 inaugural performance to be cancelled
He is the child of immigrants, he was always a gentleman, he left a lasting legacy to the fabric of our musical heritage
WHAT someone is is not WHO they are! Valuable lesson for us all!
@chkjns You don't know me, so don't presume to act like you do in comments directed to me and private messages sent to me. I'm shocked by what you got out of my comment from two months ago. In what way did I attack you? More importantly, why did you send me a 370 word rant?
I'm sick of people construing everything they read and calling it offensive. Look up the word quintessential and tell me whether or not Copeland is indeed THE quintessential American. Evidently there's no room for logic here.
@singurheartout4 Aboslutely. His adaptation of that tune is the embodiment of the Amerian Spirit, and much beyond our simple scope of American identity, the spirit of the wonder that is the human spirit.
The world silently lost a master of human understanding when Aaron Copland passed away.
@singurheartout4 he didn't actually compose this melody, but rather adapted it for his Appalachain Spring Ballet Suite. These are definitely not the harmonies in the ballet.
Magistr8B is not me. He is a hacker who created a username very similar to mine (the last character of my username is the number 8and his is the letter B)and followed me here through my favorites. Please everyone give his comment a thumbs down so we can make it where it is not readily visible on this channel. Whoever Magistr8B is, he has no class which is clearly demonstrated by his trash mouthing this beautiful music!
this is good. im in chorus and we are learning this song. i am thinking about trying out for a solo so i am checking out some videos. yours is very inspiring :)

Nicely done, but I thought their costumes were at odd with the sentiments expressed in the music.

Aaron Copeland didn't write Simple Gifts, Joseph Brackett did. So the whole argument thing going on here is kinda pointless....

There are few things as quintessentially American as Aaron Copeland.

@snoopster2009 some might argue that's EXACTLY how hes quintessentially American. Open your mind, we're all different.
