I agree with Senora Navarro. Eva was just a human being who was unfortunate enough to be caught in a web of controversy and lies. She is truly a wonderful woman.
Yes, she was doing charity work prior, but her charity that was named after her was started after she was snubbed (and then she proceeded to cut of funding for the charity first ladies usually chair).
I think she had a genuine love for the poor, but her work was motivated by other factors, as well. I also think her charity work was misplaced. She handed them fish instead of teaching them to fish. There is no evidence she was a Nazi sympathizer (she probably was more concerned about Argentina than anything in Europe), but still, she and Peron agreed on politics and she was outspoken. I'd assume she either didn't know, agreed with the policy, or didn't think much of it.
Again not entirely true. Thru her foundation several establishments were created & benefitted Argentina as a whole contrary to what the haters say. Healthcare was provided to the poor & several hospitals were built which meant those suffering from malnutrition, cholera other ailments finally received treatment which was beneficial to all especially when youre dealing with outbreaks. Education (from the 100+ schools that were built) & the training of thousands of nurses also had long term gains.
CONT: She also set a precedent & set forth the idea that women can become active in politics & because of her a lot of women entered politics in Argentina. This is not simply giving fish, this is changing a prehistoric way of thinking when referencing the poor & women. Of course she gave free hand-outs but that was an idea of a temporary relief/solution to the overwhelming problems of poverty Argentina had at the time (despite being a rich country).
And for the record. I would like to state these are the debates I like. Those that are respectful of all sides and do not result to crude name calling. Kudos :-)
Heck, her charity was only started because she was mad that she wasn't asked to be the head of the charity that first ladies normally chaired. She might have not been the one to allow the Nazi's sanctuary, but she knew the barbarians were in her country and did nothing to stop it. I think her charity work was based partially on her love of poor people, her vindictiveness on what she went through as a child, and her desire to stay in power. She is definitely an interesting person.
Not true, Eva was doing charity work prior to 1947 (although in a smaller scale since her power & influence wasnt fully established yet) such as visiting factories, visiting shanty towns & giving out food, clothing etc. Some historians state there were talks of dismantling the Lady of Benevolence prior to the so called confrontation bcoz Eva did not like how they exploited the poor/children- making the child beg for money wearing signs & with shaved heads.
CONT: The fact that Eva worked herself sick, worked 18 hour days, kissed lepers, those with syphilis, tuberculosis, cancer & would even catch Lice on occasions (as per her hairdresser) bcoz she would refuse to insult the poor only demonstrates other motives besides revenge. Her own confessor & even the Spanish poet Castiniera de Dios who watched her work were astounded at what they saw. The poet even questioned why such a young & beautiful women would totally give herself up to these people.
Re The Nazi: Eva was NOT the President & at the time of this smuggling her power was limited. People seem to forget or ignore that she was a First Lady not the President of the Republic. What Peron did at times she was powerless to stop & may have had no knowledge of.
Several well established historians have stated Eva played no part & will never accuse Evita of being a Nazi Sympathizer & why condemn a women whose role in this has yet to be proven or been disproved? Research clearly shows the US, the UK, Russia and even the Vatican helped many Nazis. Not many politicians of the time have their hands clean. It is quite funny that no other first lady of these so called establishments are blamed like Evita is as if she had anything to do with it.
Its very easy to say that Evas charitable works served no purpose but the reality is different. Argentina prior to 1945 was lacking behind other nations in Infant deaths/Tuberculosis/Venereal disease/ Mental Health/Epidemics etc & those with disabilities were neglected. Why? The poor did not receive & could not afford healthcare. Evas hospitals worked (just ask Maryssa Navarro) & the training of thousands of nurses who then went off to help those in need of medical treatment served a purpose.
CONT: During Evas time her foundation added 15000 more hospital beds not to mention the hospitals, clinics & hospital trains (yup trains) that went out fully equipped with Xray machines & operating tables to those poor country folk that could not get to a doctor. To state no one benefitted from this is nonsense. Argentina had enormous poverty & people needing healthcare urgently. Not to mention how the old, women & education in general benefitted from these charitable works. Useless? Hardly.
I'd rather see the poor come out of poverty and be able to pay for their needs themselves. If they stay dependent on anyone for their needs, even the government, they cannot do this. Eva instilled in them an intitlement mentality, which I believe is counterproductive because it stops anyone from making the needed changes in their life because it's not up to them to go out and do it. It is now the governments job to make sure I am not sick.
Again that is not accurate. To state that these poor people did not work is inaccurate. They did work. In fact, they were the ones pumping the life blood through the Argentina economy but had nothing to show for it. They still lived in squalor, shanties & suffered from malnutrition, diseases & hardship. That was the reality of millions of the time. They worked but unless they were part of the established class, the landed gentry who ruled the government, they saw little of that money.
CONT: The working classes worked hard. Eva knew this which is why she started her charitable works. You should reap the benefits of your labour. That's the mentality she had. To stop the senseless exploitation of the poor, women, children & the elderly. Sounds just to me & all of those factions benefitted throughout her reign. Her methods were unconventional but it takes someone like Eva to put a stop to a system that isn't working.
@EnzFab73 And Peronism did work??? where do yo u think her and her husbands wealth came from?? hard work? the "poor" that she "loved" payed for this wealth...her fundation had no audit so no one but herself knew where the money went. Once she was gone the argentinian poor where still poor and Argentina, such a rich country, was on its way towards bankruptcy.
From what I read, she did make major mistakes and was definitely flawed. For one, she was an incredibly vindictive individual and took down those she felt crossed her when she came to power, She also forced businesses to give her money for her charity under threat of shutting them down. The problem is her detractors probably stretched the truth to make her look bad, but she did so as well to make her look better than she was. This makes it hard to know for sure what truely happened.
Thanks so much for this video and thanks to evitastories for linking it. I took Marysa Navarro's comment on "enormous mistakes" as just a notation on each and every human, who hasn't made "enormous mistakes" at least in our own eyes at times. But not many of us have ever done the great things that Evita has done. So she is entitled to her share of mistakes. But it is the person she was that I love and admire and that is forever. Evita was a remarkable woman on every level.
Great video... I only wish it was longer. Ms Navarro is such an amazing historian... she knows practically everything about Evita and always tries to show her as a woman with faults but who was nonetheless extraordinary and one of a kind. Loved it.
Thanks for the comments. I accidently deleted the post from the poster stating Evita liked Nazi's when I was going to respond to it. Although its true that Juan allowed Nazi's to Argentina (let's not ignore other nations did too such as the US, UK, Russia etc) there is no evidence Eva was involved. Juan was the President, not Eva & at the time, Eva did not have the power to have been able to achieve this. According to actual scholars, Evita was not involved so the haters need to give it a rest.
And the nuance that so many miss is that there was no official anti-Semitism in Peronist Argentina and Juan Peron's government was the first to allow Jewish citizens to hold national office. Do a Google for the article "THE JEWS AND PERÓN: COMMUNAL POLITICS AND NATIONAL IDENTITY IN
PERONIST ARGENTINA, 1946-1955" by Lawrence D. Bell, M.A.
Marysa Navarro is my hero she makes Eva Perón accurate, human and most importantly not biased. She points out some wrong moves of peronist movement but also a lot of great political efforts to improve the poorest life conditions. Thank You Mrs. Navarro very much. This should be shown to all ALW's "Evita" fans. Really. Thanks for uploading very much !
I'd be interested to know which "enormous mistakes" she thinks Eva Peron made. Too bad she didn't elaborate. I know that in the biography she says that Evita created a cult around Juan Peron and that this inhibited any open dialogue.
ALW fans won't listen. They are so set in their ways and believe Eva was a female Hitler that they truly believe ALW's bile. Go to any ALW message board and you'll see it. They also think Che was a saint. They're impossible to reason with.
Thank you for uploading this. Marysa Navarro sums it up so succinctly. She points out how ridiculous the premise of the musical is.
The "problem" however is that Marysa Navarro is such a scholar. The vast majority of the population simply is not going to listen to all of this. They just want the image of Eva Peron as a woman who slept her way to the top.

I think she did so because: (just my opinion)
1- It was keeping her and Peron in power.
2- I think she enjoyed being regarded as a "saint" Her ego came into play
3- She had an axe to grind with the upper and middle classes
4- She wanted to help them and had concern for them. (even though I don't think what she did necessarily made day to day life better in Argentina.)
