Bit the bullit since last post. '12 848Evo pulls 123hp/73.5lbs out of the box. Slip-on nets it another 4hp/1lb. Rexxor mapping & a BMC puts it back to the advertised 136hp/75lbs. Still getting 33mpg too, so I imagine this was designed-in.
Showa is surprisingly awesome, but springs are too stiff for anyone under 190lbs (+$120). Tires are great for track, but save them and use Dunlop Q2's as dailies. She does NOT like going slow and you can feel it come together when you start mixing it up.
About price (USD), what I'm offered currently at the dealer is $15K out the door for the 848, $17K OTD for 1198 + $1000 in Ducati credit (Termi's basically). 1198 adds some cubes/power and a working Traction Device for that grand but takes away the wet clutch which I prefer (miss the sound though).
And then there's that darn MV F3 currently taking deposits for "maybe" an April '12 delivery (which usually means July at best).
Would anyone care to compare a 848 Evo versus buying a used 1098? - I'm a former RC51 owner X 2....so I'm interested in what would be a natural transition.
@stoppie I'm interested in some of that as well. I rented an '09 848 (non-Evo) for a weekend, and as a past RC51 and 996 owner, the 848 is so ahead I almost chuckle when I try to compare them myself. I feel the 848's power curve is spot on, so it's there more early in the revs and felt much more friendly. From an RC51, the Ducs may have you feeling like you're setting on it rather than in it.
I'm mixed between an 1198 and 848 myself. Dealer incentive has them basically $1000 different OTD.
@Chumly409 so did the 848 feel stronger n faster then the rc51?was the 848 modded?was the rc51 modded?i have a 03 rc with sato pipes,power cammander3,dan kyle mapping.always wanted to know if i bought a 848,would i feel satisfyed with the power n speed?or do i need a 1098?
@freightrain808 The 848evo is a huge leap forward the RC51 or 998 it contends with. I had to add a lot of work and money to an RC51 to still fall behind a showroom Evo. It's got a lot of guts, is planted, and is a perfect bike IMO.
IMO, the 1198/1098 is easier to manage on the streets and some incentives place them just $1K apart. Right now you have the 848 Corse and MV F3 to split that difference too, either of which I'd buy right now.
@dibnah46, It's all relative... He doesn't mean only 10 grand compared to a loaf of bread. He means only 10 grand compared to other supersport bikes such as all the 1000cc's.
@dibnah46 Give it a couple of years. The price will come down. I plan on gettin a 2011 some time in 2012. But I've been savin a bit up for it mate. Thats what its all about. Save "n" play.
@dibnah46 They handle very differently on standard suspension settings. 999 is low and sharp in the turns. 848 is taller and has a much firmer ride, but still very planted.
Comparative comfort is down to your riding style and physical size.
The wet clutch on the 848 is a lot easier if you do a lot of riding in town, but on sweeping roads you won't notice the difference.
999 has more low down grunt. 848 is happy to rev more, so the power curve is a bit flatter.
Reminds me of the 916 in terms of looks (is there a better looking bike?), sound (is there a better sounding bike?) and of course it goes, turns and stops like a wee jewel.

Am I the only one that saw the front forks bottom out at 1:02 ? Not sure if thats good or bad . Still, , , Damn Sexy Bike ! And whats wrong with havin a Black one ? :oP
Most of you responding here probably couldn't afford to by an 848 if your life depended on it. I, on the other hand can and just might. Of course, I'm kind of an old geezer so pardon me if I don't ride it too fast.
@nightrider250R U'd rather have the bike that everyone else and their dog has just because it has the reputation of being the fastest machine? When there is a good chance u couldnt even ride it any faster than u could the 848. Not to mention the money you'd lose on the resale value after Yamaha release the next year model that has a whole 2hp increase on the previous. Rather the bike from a piano company over the beautifully crafted V-twin Ducati? Give me an 848 any day. Truly a work of art.
@FirEiLiE I didn't mention the word exclusive, but now that you mention it, it's far more so than "any" other 600 or 1 litre bike out of Japan. Go over the thing with a fine tooth comb and you'll see it's a work of art (assuming you have an eye for it). I have nothing against the japanese bikes, I have owned a few. very fast and nimble.
@addys i know you didn't, you stated that every one and their dog has a a Yamaha in comparison.
of course it is far more uncommon then a 600, or a litre bike... because it isn't in either class yet cost more then the 600 for not much more performance and nearly the same as the litre for less .
its a beautiful looking bike no need for a fine tooth comb, but if i wanted a work of "art" (as you call it), id buy a painting
@addys I dont want the bike for the speed. Yamaha has cheaper parts and more accessories. Ducati is just a poser bike for people who want to go fast but never will. Speed has no factor. Insurance is cheaper also. Plus the R6 is not the fastest bike out there. The 848 and R6 are not even in the same class. Last the R6 has some of the best handling and is light is the reason I will get one. Ducati=Overrated.
@nightrider250R I don't think so.. the ducati is not overrated... it is a unique experience in terms of .. almost everything. From the price, sound, v-twin, gear box, quality of the materials etc. Really different. I had an R6 one month ago.. I sold it for an 848 but I love both. The r6 is an amazing machine but completely different. You can't compare. I personally bought a Ducati to get a new experience. Switching to a v-twing was my main concern. The rest is about color, shape.. who cares!!
@nightrider250R Ducati is over hyped by the yuppie crowd here in KC. I have seen more than one duck rider stall their bike at a stoplight but don't hate on the machine for the poor riders who think it makes them trendy. An 848 is a street legal race bike bike and is a far cry better than your typical Ducati. Better brakes than average, better HP than average, even a wet clutch to reduce noice and add reliability and smoothness... this is the direction Duc is going and I love it! To each his own?
@dodgerider26 Yes it is. I just like how Ducati gets all respect is looked on as the best of the best. I have always had a certain respect for them like I do Harley's. Really I dont like how this company gets all respect for taking bikes to a new level. Most companies get noticed by the media. I too like what they are doing but not the way they are doing it.
WOW. i,m not really a bike guy. but i know 1.54sec is not nearly enough to show off this bike. should be 1 hour 54minutes. motorcyclenewsdotcom. you suck.
@itubrrr I have the same knee sliders and they are the worst sliders i ever had. They are funny to watch but damn, they are fucking soft i consume them in a couple of hours.
The best i've tried are the Berik or the Frank Thomas full titanium sliders
great bike but the sound of two cylinders is shit ...

Would anyone care to compare a 848 Evo versus buying a used 1098? - I'm a former RC51 owner X 2....so I'm interested in what would be a natural transition.
stoppie 7 months ago
@stoppie The only real differences between them are the power and clutch.
1098 has more power & torque, but some people don't like the dry clutch on the road.
848 is a slightly more road oriented version of the 1098. The power & gearing is more road biased and the wet clutch makes stop/start riding easier.
Other than that, they're pretty much identical.
TychoCelchu 7 months ago
@stoppie I'm interested in some of that as well. I rented an '09 848 (non-Evo) for a weekend, and as a past RC51 and 996 owner, the 848 is so ahead I almost chuckle when I try to compare them myself. You will not be disappointed with the 999s. It fires out of corners like nothing else I've ridden.
TychoCelchu 7 months ago
@TychoCelchu cheers mate looking forward to getting a leg over a ducati! how did the 848 compare to your 999?
dibnah46 7 months ago
@dibnah46 They handle very differently on standard suspension settings. 999 is low and sharp in the turns. 848 is taller and has a much firmer ride, but still very planted.
Comparative comfort is down to your riding style and physical size.
The wet clutch on the 848 is a lot easier if you do a lot of riding in town, but on sweeping roads you won't notice the difference.
999 has more low down grunt. 848 is happy to rev more, so the power curve is a bit flatter.
You should try both of them.

Most of you responding here probably couldn't afford to by an 848 if your life depended on it. I, on the other hand can and just might. Of course, I'm kind of an old geezer so pardon me if I don't ride it too fast.

nice new mcn jacket ;-) new 848 rocks.. dont think u shud compare it with a r1 nightrider, even tho r1's are sexy 2. :p

@JDIAUS but thats a different class! r1 has way more cc's! cant really compare!

Truly a work of art.
addys 1 year ago
@addys 848 is hardly an exclusive bike bud lol,
plus there is more to a bike then looks, (which you cant see while riding), unless you plan to spend more time looking at it instead
FirEiLiE 1 year ago
@FirEiLiE I didn't mention the word exclusive, but now that you mention it, it's far more so than "any" other 600 or 1 litre bike out of Japan. Go over the thing with a fine tooth comb and you'll see it's a work of art (assuming you have an eye for it). I have nothing against the japanese bikes, I have owned a few. very fast and nimble.
addys 1 year ago
@addys i know you didn't, you stated that every one and their dog has a a Yamaha in comparison.
of course it is far more uncommon then a 600, or a litre bike... because it isn't in either class yet cost more then the 600 for not much more performance and nearly the same as the litre for less .
its a beautiful looking bike no need for a fine tooth comb, but if i wanted a work of "art" (as you call it), id buy a painting
FirEiLiE 1 year ago
@FirEiLiE well thats your opinion, mine is mine.
addys 1 year ago
@addys I dont want the bike for the speed. Yamaha has cheaper parts and more accessories. Ducati is just a poser bike for people who want to go fast but never will. Speed has no factor. Insurance is cheaper also. Plus the R6 is not the fastest bike out there. The 848 and R6 are not even in the same class. Last the R6 has some of the best handling and is light is the reason I will get one. Ducati=Overrated.
nightrider250R 1 year ago
@nightrider250R I don't think so.. the ducati is not overrated... it is a unique experience in terms of .. almost everything. From the price, sound, v-twin, gear box, quality of the materials etc. Really different. I had an R6 one month ago.. I sold it for an 848 but I love both. The r6 is an amazing machine but completely different. You can't compare. I personally bought a Ducati to get a new experience. Switching to a v-twing was my main concern. The rest is about color, shape.. who cares!!
R6yam07 1 year ago
@R6yam07 Interesting - I have an R6 at the moment and I the 848 is the only other sports bike that under 1 litre that appeals to me.
Anything from 1 litre up worries me too much (can you tell I'm finding it difficult to keep the speed on the R6 down?)
And all for £1k more than the R6...
MrBradbox 1 year ago
@nightrider250R who mentioned the R6?
addys 1 year ago
@nightrider250R Ducati is over hyped by the yuppie crowd here in KC. I have seen more than one duck rider stall their bike at a stoplight but don't hate on the machine for the poor riders who think it makes them trendy. An 848 is a street legal race bike bike and is a far cry better than your typical Ducati. Better brakes than average, better HP than average, even a wet clutch to reduce noice and add reliability and smoothness... this is the direction Duc is going and I love it! To each his own?
dodgerider26 1 year ago
@dodgerider26 Yes it is. I just like how Ducati gets all respect is looked on as the best of the best. I have always had a certain respect for them like I do Harley's. Really I dont like how this company gets all respect for taking bikes to a new level. Most companies get noticed by the media. I too like what they are doing but not the way they are doing it.

@itubrrr I have the same knee sliders and they are the worst sliders i ever had. They are funny to watch but damn, they are fucking soft i consume them in a couple of hours.
The best i've tried are the Berik or the Frank Thomas full titanium sliders

only 10 grand lol, it cost basically the same as some of the jap 1000cc, for 750cc performance and a ducati badge on the tank, thats a bit steep,
but it is a thing of beauty and no doubt even in times of a recession it will still sale
