Actually it was not a rose but a White Lily painted on the fuselage of her fighter.

The russian name Liliya is directly translated as Lily flower.

RIP, you were a great citizen and fighter.

She had a white lily painted on the side of the fuselage that was confused for a rose, hence the nickname.

I think the white rose marking is a myth, it was a name given her not her choice of logo. To the best of my knowledge I have never seen a picture or profile of the Yak with a white rose.

@GerbilEssences THE TRUTH OF THE MATTER WAS THAT SHE OFTEN FLEW WITH ROSES IN HER COCKPIT, AS LILIES ARE, UNFORTUNATELY SYMBOLIC OF DEATH- BUT SHE DID INDEED PAINT A LILY (HER FIRST NAME - LILYA, LILY) ON THE SIDE OF HER A/C.WHICH FROM A DISTANCE COULD EASILY BE MISTAKEN FOR A ROSE. Generations of biographers and writers have made the same mistake..

Lilly, Lilly - La Rose of Stalingrad - I have your picture with her fighter pilot helmet, the uniforme to combat and their beautiful blonde hair that insist to leave in tips of her head's protection. Your deep glance, in my picture no gotten to define the its color, it points an elsewhere, some place, some horizon, but not for me. Even so, it is impossible do not fall in love. Observation balloons counted in World War 1. It was extremely dangerous because of all the Anti-Aircraft installations that surrounded the balloons. This had to be true in World War 2 as well, because observation balloons are necessarily close to command centers where intelligence is most critical. So, if I were counting, an observation balloon would count. It is a very strategic target to destroy and requires great courage.
