Just got a 700r4 from a camero for my 65 c10 shortbed. Going to build my original 250straight six to. Milled the head and did the valves. Just need to port and polish them. But for sure the clifford intake and a good 4barrel set up will do a lot. also some headers. But not cliffords headers and cam. Not cost effective. You can get the same from other companys at a fraction of the cost.
I get about 10-13 mpg in mine, that is roughly 5 km/L. The 4 speed has a direct drive 4th gear, so it is the same as my 3 speed, you're only picking up a granny first. Plus the 1 tons came with a 4.11 or 4.56 rear gear and I have a 3.73, so your mileage will be a little less than mine.
i am thinking of buying an 1972 Chevrolet C-30 Stepside long Bed. with the same engine so i wonder what is the milage. in liter if you know :P hard to live in norway :P
I love those Chevy straight sixes. Hope you're keeping yours. I'd suggest a '66-'68 Saginaw 3 speed overdrive for a transmission. 1) it doesn't have that "bus" sound when pulling out in 1st gear 2) it is a more heavy duty transmission 3) it has a SYNCHRONIZED 1ST GEAR!!! I just converted m y'58 Impala from a Powerglide to a Saginaw 3spd OD and I love it! My '56 wagon has a 235 six with an earlier overdrive, which is still a nice transmission; better than a standard 3 speed. Nice truck!
OMG!! I got one just like this! Same color and everything, except mine is a 65 stepside. It originally had a 235cid, but it took a shit a long time ago, so got a brand new 250cid motor from gm. Great trucks!
Man you are lucky to have a Chevy truck with that bodystyle. I would love to find one with either an original 292 or 327 powerplant. Being that I got my '69 Camaro as a 16th b-day gift, I know you'll do the best you can to keep that truck running well for a very long time.
That's built up soot and water coming out. It used to run rich and the pipe would blow crap out when it was revved up. It only uses 1/2 to 3/4 of a quart of oil per 3000 mile oil change.
I have an '82 with a jacked up carburetor, it gets about 5mpg city, 8 or 9 highway! I hope to either completely rebuild it, or replace it with a small block V8
great project man!!! Keep the six. It's neat stock, or modified, hell- turbo it if you want or whatever (obviously sized to make boost at low rpm as the inliners aren't much for revving), but even stock it's cooler than a sbc.
Before I rebuilt the head, I averaged about 10 mpg in the city and 13 on the highway. I haven't filled it up to check after rebuilding the head. I'm thinking that I get maybe 1 or 2 mpg more in the city and the highway. With the R10 trans, I'm hoping for 15 mpg city and 18 mpg highway.
If I was going to change engines, I would go up to a 292 straight six. Mine is running strong and she's staying in there as long as the block is still good.
In 40 years lets see how many RICERS they are still left to be reused and hot rodded. The odds are slim since they are not made to last that long like GOOD OL AMERICAN STEEL BITCHES!!!
I just had the head completely rebuilt on it after she broke a valve spring. I got new intake and exhaust valves, hardened exhaust seats, new valve guides, new rocker arms and balls, new top end gaskets, the head shaved, the manifolds leveled out and valve guide oil seals. Now it runs much smoother, doesn't cough, sputter, or smoke. When I get a chance, I will post a new video of the truck in action.

Wow... you're a nice one, why don't you stick with your rice-mobiles.
Looks like a fun project! I don't know much about the Rochesters, but you might want to back down the fuel a lil bit. It might not cough like that so much, not to mention a decrease in fuel consumption.
Are serious right now, AN ASIAN kid calling my car a rice mobile, Making fun of a Car that your parents and grandparent built, thats sad. You hate your peoples own creations.
I'm not Asian, I'm Native American, smart one. It's an insight joke. Come on, man, don't comment on something you know nothing about. Anyways... again, teeter, looks like a very fun project! Have fun!
hey fella love the truck!! i think another thing you should consider putting on the beast is a thermo fan. because your still running the original fan your losing between 10 to 15hp i replaced the fan on my holden 202 red with a thermo fan and it increased the power n decreased the fuel consumption!! just thought id share that with ya!
Thanks for the compliments! I just got done putting the head back on after having it rebuilt with new valves, springs, seats, and rockers and all new top end gaskets. I checked on a flex-fan on my last parts trip into town, but they didn't have a 16" GM fan. As soon as one comes in, its going on the water pump to ease up on the upper RPM strain the stocker creates.
these trucks are fun project vehicles. So much you can do to them. theres enough room under the hood for a V8. Especially if you don't care about gas millage any more. It's cool if you want to keep it close to original though. have fun!
Oh - I forgot to mention another potential couple of reasons the engine runs the way it does. Could be a bad carburetor (rebuild or replace) or fuel that sat in the tank a long time without stabilizer added, and now has gummed up in the carb.
The truck has sat for about 4 months with no gas in the tank. I replaced the fuel line last summer when the old one crumpled up changing out the carb for a new one, and thats the same size as the old one. There is a hole in the base of the carb that has a matching hole in the intake manifold for the power valve, and the gasket is blocking it. The plugs are new Bosch Platinum 1's and the timing is dead on at 6 deg BTDC.
It runs that rich so that it can pull our trailer and loads. When its loaded, it burns perfectly clean and that soot has built up with it just idling and it hasn't been worked in quite some time.
Ah - got it. But unless you spend more time hauling a load or pulling a trailer, I'd back down the fuel a bit, or change to timing to compensate for the additional rich mixture. Just a suggestion, as fuel is a tad expensive to waste.
Do you have a factory cam or an aftermarket? I have a 292 straight six that has an Edelbrock 4 barrel, but an aftermarket cam has it running silky smooth with only a slight lope at idle.
Its the factory cam. The only thing that has ever been touched is the new carb (Rochester B one barrel) and the fuel pump. I've considered putting a 1/2 race cam in it when its rebuilt, but I haven't decided yet since I need the 1800 rpm torque peak for pulling stuff around the house.
If I change the timing more than 1 degree either way, the engine runs too rough to even consider driving. I ought to check the float level and see if it is where it needs to be.
As far as performance I think the problem is clearly the timing (for one) and you may want to check your spark plugs. With the soot, stumbling, and black expulsion from the tailpipe you are clearly running too rich. It could also be a clogged air filter.
Timing is what I'd start with. Plus you have a HUGE diameter fuel line for such a small engine. Looks like it was recently replaced. Could be getting too much gas to the carb.
I'm pulling the engine in a month once school ends for the summer and going through it top to bottom. The Rochester B 1 barrel is being traded for a 390 cfm Holley 4 barrel and a Clifford hot-water head.
Thats a killer little motor in there man, I'm glad to hear that you are going to keep it! And the truck looks like it's in really good shape. Good luck with the rebuild!
