  • my parents say imjust lazy, i dont really have any interest in many things and usually feel un-motivated. in my own experience is when i do just a little bit of sports like basket ball and dribbling the ball around a defense makes me feel different a little more alive. or like when reading something interesting like magazines make me feel better. i dont do it much cause im a very busy person with work and kids but i've been thinking of taking a focus program for my vacation.

  • Thanks for this video.

  • fag talk

  • @zmajski777 well if you have ADD you will understand what he is talking about.

  • BEHAVIORAL intervention?

so basically you dont help them or anything, just teach the kids to sit still so no one will notice they are different?

i had several psychologists and psychiatrists who have tried to 'tame' me and fit me into a certain idea of what is 'normal'. none managed.

i learned to deal with my issue (that wasn't a simple case) in my own way with the help of my family. but i dont kid myself by taking pills just to feel adequate, and im proud of who i am and what ive achieved.

  • take Neurofeedback Not Ritalin (speed) that doesn't fix the problem. neurofeedback helps :D

  • anything published in 1999 may have alot of quality info. and i think this guy has alot of bright info, but i think its time to update that info. its probably still all true. but us ADHD people need to be able to use very recent stuff along with older stuff to be able to fight off the stupidity we have to deal with by the uninformed.

  • Very good coment! Besides, atwhite, although mentioning important conclusions, i feel, at least in terms of tone, he is overemphasizing the research he's talking about. Non the less. ... I'm glad atwhite took the time to study it and give his explanation here.

  • try L-theanine with GABA

  • im ADD im 14 years old and if i did not take meds or if i was not involed with baseball and friends i would be a wreck. im a B student and a hard worker, ADD people are each different i feel. My friend took meds for ADD and he was a "zoombie". Yet i take 70mg of adderial and my personality is very outgoing. ADD kids need to brought up quicker i belive. i was brought up in a " rea life" invoriment and it has helped me in many ways because i am so mature. MEDS DONT HARM THEY HELP!

  • You just need ot give the child plenty of excercise and interesting things to do.

BOREDOM is a major factor is lunatic child dissorder. It was for me, anyway, and i was crazy !

Also, food ! The more sweets and chocolate you feed me, the mor elikely i am to want ot eat the sofa, later on.

Trying to CON me into being wuiet, by giving me such things as drawing books, will make me think you are trying to fool me into being quiet, and make me listen to you less.

ACTION is what i need !

  • i "have" add and i think that the medicine just makes a small problem gradualy worsen untill you have to depend on the companies drugs/poison to function properly

THESE TYPES, OF MEDICINE, TURNED, ME ,INTO, A, Z O M B I E. from about 1st grade- 9th1/2 "zombie" is what my teachers told my mom i was like :(

im 15 and in 10th grade. drugs for these types off issues are like listening to music too loud it just makes an easy to solve problem grow and be harder to recover from :(

  • I`m wondering what standard the study used to define better? Did it mean sitting sit still & quiet? Or did it mean going from a D & F student to an all A student? Or did it mean a child went from rude & obnoxious in his behavior to very polite and socially pleasant (not calm & quiet that`s a different thing). I think the definition of "better" is very important.

  • Wow! I have to say that from my experience, I totally agree with this study. I have a 16 year old son with Aspergers/ADHD/anxiety. He had intense therapy/behavioral intervention as a child and we saw very little improvement in his behavior.

What helped the most was medication.

By the way, atwhite, I think that your outlook will not be as gloomy once your son is older. Maturation is a glorious thing : )

  • I agree on what you said I'll give you A+

  • Biga, I gave you a negative, not for your thoughts but for your lack of grammar and spelling. I agree with you but you have to show that we can function like teachers, even without drugs! :-D

    ADHD Mom

  • cute guy... seems gay

  • Do you happen to know if this study is available on PsycINFO, and the exact title of it? I just searched for it, and found abstracts that cited the MTA (although, none were available in full text, so I couldn't find the exact reference). I was recently diagnosed with ADHD, and am trying to find out as much as I can. I'm a psychology student, but have never studied abnormal psych, so I'm not too familiar with the literature in that area.

  • Well, that seems predictable given that ADHD is due to a decrease in activity in areas of the prefrontal cortex and basal ganglia, rather than some learned behavior. That's very interesting, though.

  • I remember being assaulted by my second grade teacher for having the gal to tell her that 5-3=-2... IT was her argument that a larger number couldn't be taken from a smaller number. I refused to be lied to or except a lie as truth so I didn't back down and was violently shaken and thrown across the room knocking desk out of the way as I flew.

  • Yes meds work, but it is not worth it.

Why can't these children be themseleves?

  • Cant make it in life being yourself with ADHD thats just the way it is these days.

  • cant make it in life with that attitude either. adhd drugs help everyone concentrate, whether ur mentally disabled or not. i dont know wat kind of messed up life ur going for anyway

  • Well, for my daughter it was a case of her injuring herself and her siblings. She was so hyper that she couldn't sleep at night, and we found her (3 yrs old at the time) using a butcher knife in the kitchen. At 18 months old she was climbing up bookcases in the middle of the night and screaming cause she couldn't get down. At 4 yrs. old, she was ready to jump off her windowsill in an attempt to fly. Her safety came first in my decision to use meds.

  • sounds like a normal kid to me.

  • I think you'd best look into who sponsored the so called "study". You'll likely find a conflict of interest.

Drugs, whether legal or not, are bad. To pharmaceutical companies however, they are profit generators. That's a no brainer.

  • sorry- I mean when the shit hits the FAN! Anyway, such videos should be illegal

  • I tell you all, when the shit hits the ceiling, I am going to have a chance to duck. When ADHD is outlawed, you and others will be rounded up and imprisoned like Nazis.

  • You are a damn loony

  • One of the better informative videos about A.D.D. I HAVE A.D.D :) Ya Me! ;) Anyhow . . . I generally seek these videos for the best examples of understanding that I can show family/friends etc. You come across very non bias and you definatley are an example of "Broad Minded" . . . . I Thank You for your efforts :)

  • Good video. Nice to know about that study. My question is, who sponsored the study? It wasn't a group affiliated with drug companies was it?

  • After doing some research, I stumbled upon a paper published by Dr. Peter R Breggin. Here is an excerpt from his paper. "The framer of the MTA studies, Peter Jensen (then at NIMH), and all the principal investigators are drug advocates who touted the positive results of the study even before it was completed or published. They have devoted their careers to encouraging the concept of ADHD and the drugging of children. Some, like Conners, have been doing so for four decades."

  • Granted, apparently this Dr. has made a career out of fighting drug companies and thus he may be biased himself, but I think it might be worth it to check the validity of his claims.

  • I have ADD and I can tell you my words of why and how it can be solved. However, you would need to send me a message because I can't type over the limit.

  • i am an adult with add. I am very confused about what to do because there is so much informatin and difference opinions. Would be interested in how you deal with it. Thanks!

  • Thanks for posting this video ... it seems to me that you've turned something very good with the trials you've been given.

  • I think the results of the MTA study is really helpful to parents, because it says that their child's problem does not occur because they are bad parents. It just happens.

  • For me, the treatment depends on how the child response on the treatment you use whether by medication or intensive behavioral intervention, but first we must use the behavioral intervention, if the child did coup with it less cost and the child will fill comfort by giving him/her the attention needed. What I'm trying to express is that children with this kind of disorder needs proper care and love from their parents.

"This is one of the test GOD"

  • They published a whole paper on how the study was conducted. I have not looked into how the diagnoses were made. There has been subsequent analysis of the study which claim that the beneficial effects of behavioral treatment were under recognized. There was no industry sponsor to the study, so I doubt conflict of interest.

  • I would be curious as well as to how the diagnosis were made. What instruments did they use?

  • The methods section states children met the DSM-IV criteria for ADHD combined type. They used and instrument called the Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children (DISC). Comorbid conditions were allowed because they are common in ADHD. A separate paper outlined evaluation methods in detail: J Atention Disord. 1997;1:217-234.

  • the question is what is improvement? what exactly were they trying to improve and what was the criteria for improvement? did they try dietary intervention? any biomedical intervention at all?

  • They measured "improvement" in many areas of function, for example parent and teacher rating of hyperactivity - too many to discuss here. Improvement is a value judgement. In the study for example, better attention would be considered an improvement. This study tested medication and multiple psychosocial interventions only, no dietary trials.

  • what concerns me is that the way they judged improvement could me slanted. if i had a child who disobeyed me and i screamed at them, you could ask me if hours later he was more obedient. the answer would be yes. but did i have a child who was overall more respective of my authority (which would be the true goal as a parent).

  • I'm curious how they diagnosed ADD or measured improvement. It does seem the sample size was probably random, probably more than sufficient and the conclusions were fair to the results and was probably, as you say, a well planned and conducted study. Do people contest anything about conflict of interest related biases for this study? Anyhow, I do agree that chemistry, genetics have a much greater role in behavior than most of us want to admit to thinking.
