  • brings back all the memorries of harry. he would be proud

  • Wow, what a talent!

  • Shows what a great talent Pat is! A classically trained voice kicking azz on rock'n'roll!

  • Pat nails this as only she could. It's almost as if Harry wrote this for her to sing.

  • Songstress !!!

  • All of us who used to sit at Harry's concerts in the "cheap seats" thankyou Pat for making this song come alive.. Harry would be proud

  • so powerfull, brings tears to my eyes.I have looked for this for years.

  • Love you, Pat! I can listen to this a thousand times, and it still sends shivers down my spine!!

  • Thanks for the song!

    I live in Ecuador I'm 22 and I love Pat Benatar <3

Pat, Neil, I love you so much!

  • Thank you for posting this. It is so powerful.

  • Didn't know pat could be so poignangt.she really did this song justice!!!!!!!!

  • I sang this song for a talent show when i was in the 5th grade.... def did not match up to Pat here, but I did ok :) I won the talent show :)

  • What a voice the singers today could take lessons, and learn what singing really is.

Still one of my favorite singers !

  • She is sooo talented!

  • Stunning!

  • unfortunately as much as i love Harry Chapin she does this song so much better D:

  • Not a lot of songs can make my cry...This is one of them !

  • The Queen of Rock... Benatar can sing anything!

  • it was so good it made me cry

  • Great song by a great songwriter, sung by a great voice. How can there be dislikes?

  • wow, Pat Benatar singing Harry Chapin, you couldn't outdo this even if you had Meatloaf singing stairway to heaven

  • is not she a great singer.... ??!!!!!

  • best part of the concert!

  • Wow! That's all I can say... wow! Amazing!

  • Amazing it took my breath away, she has an amazing voice. It is really too bad that singers like this just don't come around anymore. True rock n' roll is truly becoming an ancient art.

  • what an awesome voice!! Beautiful song!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • two people don't have hearts or soul....

  • Gosh dang, gives me shivers! Truly an amazing vocal! Love you, Benatar!

  • As a long time fan, I wish more people could get to see & know this softer/prettier side of Pat's singing. Check out her duet w/Cheryl Crow on a song called "I Shall Believe"... really beautiful vocals as well.

  • Good Lord. That was amazing.

  • Still gives me shivers - I don't know how she pulled this off while seated!

  • Harry is a genius

  • Since rediscovering this performance a few days ago, I have watched it countless times. I find it truly moving, Pat's voice is just so expressive and the lyrics are so visual. A really tremendous performance befitting of a musical genius such as Harry Chapin.

  • pat benatar is the best female singer ever . and im 18 lol

  • I'm alway excited to find a Pat Benatar song I've missed. I love her!

  • It's very difficult for another artist to capture the heart and essence of a Harry Chapin song because his music was so closely tied to him, and he wrote and told his stories in such vivid color. But, Pat Benatar's performance is stunning and she came closer than any other artist in finding Harry's heart and essence. It gets better and more interesting each time you see it.

  • Pat is by far the best female rock performer. The stuff that passes for rock music today is missing the elusive quality that Pat so effortlessly and naturally projected on stage.

Even though I am a year older than her, I have just recently discovered the unique quality in Pat's music and performance style. There was a lot of other things going on in my life during the 80's that put my focus elsewhere..but now, I have come to appreciate Pat for who she is..Simply put....the Queen of Rock!!

  • I had never seen this, thanks for posting!

  • Fabulous rendition. It breathes new life into harry's work. Pat Benetar is great.

  • As a huge Harry fan, I have to say that Pat more than does this justice.

  • I wish more people had a chance to watch this video. Pat shows so much talent without all the extras.

  • Beautiful!

  • Keep in mind that this is not a studio recording. Pat sounds great live unedited-uncut. Nobody does it better.

  • No matter how many times I listen to this video, it brings me to tears. Damn you Benatar! :-) What an unbelievable woman, what an unbelievable singer, there will never be another like you!

  • @gearhedguy i dont need to retype it,, u said it appropraitely,, same here

  • @gearhedguy And, what an amazing song.

  • Some things one will never get over.....I love you

  • Can someone tell me what year this is from please?

  • @topspinblue - 1988

  • I've loved Benatar's music since 79 and have seen her way too many times in concert (41 times) but this kind of music and singing I enjoy over her hits. Maybe it's because I'm not 18 anymore, but rather 45! lol

  • I wish Pat would record her versions of songs like this...Absolutely compelling, luminous, desperate, shimmering... 'holy'

  • @jblai05 I couldn't agree more . She has an amazing talent!

  • What great tribute to an artist, by an artist...the sorts of souls that pass what they have to the starving...and we all starve for that kind of love and care sometimes. Our shooting star is so near always. Think Benatar caught that urgency...knows it herself. Wow...

  • The only Pat Benatar performance I ever liked. And this bowled me over.

  • My wife and I recorded the Tribute to Harry Chapin. I was barely able to move after the show as I was so overwhelmed. Pat Benatar may have given one of her best

performances of her career, yet more important she immortalized this unbelieveable

song. It's taken us years to cope with Harry's passing . Steve and Big John Wallace

and Howard Fields did a great gig in Tampa . We were drenched in tears (literally).

    .

  • @DASULAR17 Have you heard any of his daughter's music? She's very different, her own person, but the humanitarian aspect of Harry's persona is alive and thriving in her. Perhaps supporting her in her early years, (which were hard on Harry too) might be a fitting tribute to one of the greatest humans ever.

  • I saw Harry in concert while attending Iowa State University 1976-1980. I remember Harry in the lobby singing autographs. I was shy, but made it to the table where he was/ I gave him a check, and he signed it. Then he kissed me and said I had cute freckles. Harry was the most human, amazing man ever. God rest your soul. Oh, I did finally wash my cheek, but never thru away the check he signed.

  • 1974... That was only the scratch of the surface. Only true Pat fans can understant this song. Wow, it makes me weep. Nice.,,, Pat is the godess of rock, there is no other.... NONE. Still, she is not in the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME! Why is that? She is an icon and paved the way for most all female singers. Pat is a goddess, IMHO, she should be respected. Damn it it makes me sad.................

  • @chuckfleener Watching CMT Crossroads with Pat and Martina tonight. Not sure how old it is. But - damn good point. Why isn't Pat in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame???

  • I just love her smile

  • i would marry her

  • She need to get back in the saddle and release some new material . Get some Good song writers and let her rip . An acoustic album would be great.

  • I love that line "...but she could make it holy." What a beautiful person that has this energy emanating from their psyche.

  • Man Pat Benatar just slugged this song to the moon when she sang it that night. Amazing.

I lover her music and am proud to be a fan.

Can't wait to buy her autobiography this year.

Its supppose to be released on June 8th,

    3 days after my birthday.

    Thanks Pat.:)

  • I have never seen this before, although i've heard the audio....... i would say for me, this is Pat's best live vocal performance ever, and i've heard ALOT of them in 32 years, both live and recorded... wow, this is incredible, love the internet b/c of stuff like this...... love you Pat! New album?!

  • This makes me cry every time I watch it. It describes a relationship I have had to a tea, and is delivered by Pat in such an emotional way. Thanks Pat, and thanks Harry for the song.

  • Great job. Harry would be proud

  • I've been a fan since 1982 (or perhaps even earlier...She's a true blue talent. Madonna...still has gimmicks...Pat, rocks every year...never forgetting who she is where she came from! She rocked NY again this year...30th Anniversary...great show!

  • Too bad the up and comers don't have real idols like this. They don't make em' like this anymore. I fear the there are no more real Pat Benatar's/Ann Wilson's/Linda Ronstadt's anymore. Remember when women used to really sing and they didn't need gimmics to grab attention? They only needed their voices.

  • I agree completely; however, Pat started with a gimmick, too. She was discovered in a Halloween costume...a vampire...if my memory serves me correctly... that became her stage persona (All black rocker chick, anyone?) I love this song, though. It's my favorite...ever. And I love Pat...hence the screen name.

  • That's how one legend describes it. But she wasn't ruled by it. She didnt feel the need to reinvent herself. She was and is what she is...A true spectacular voice. Its unbelievable to me that Madonna is in the Rock Hall of Fame, but Pat isnt...I lost all respect for RHF after that one.

  • So agree .. before Madonna there was Pat how has she been excluded, while popular vote is one aspect I just dont get it .. pat has been eligible for about 5 years now why no induction?

  • No, Pat was discovered at open mike night at Catch a Rising Star. Her "gimmick" was a leotard with a jacket over it...not a costume...this is way back when she was the only female rocker of her kind AND radio would not play 2 female artists at the same time...so....she had more challenges than gimmick...and the talent to back it up! all I can say is "brittnay who?"

  • no gimmick...sorry...she was discovered in Catch a Rising Star...open mike night...her gimmick only included wearing leotards with a jacket but she was faced with so many obstacles...more than one female artist couldn't even be played on the radio at the same time! She's a trail blazer in every sense...

  • @ldg68 - True- Rick Newman, (owner of Catch) discovered her and became her manager.

  • @zoomspitfire Janis Ian

  • Thank you so much for posting this. Have been a Pat Benatar fan since 1982 when I was 15. This is one of her best. For all of you who are asking how to get it on CD, it's on Pat's Synchronistic Wanderings box set,

  • The Queen of Rock!

  • Wow.....For anyone that that has a mild interest in Pat to a full blow fan...this is essential.....strip away the rock band and give the song minimal background music and turn her loose.....what a stellar song from the largest voice to come out of a small frame.....even one more reason Pat continues to have very loyal fans too this day.....and they are in thier 30th anniverysary tour in 2009...i will see them in about 6 weeks....can't wait.....

  • Pat has such a great voice! She could cover any song and it will sound better!

  • Out of all of Pat's performances, this is my favortie. Talk about from the heart. I miss Harry in some way almost every day. God Bless :)

  • Patty takes that song to another level of emotional reality.....one that Harry probably envisoned when he wrote it.

  • She is special...

    WOW...

  • This was recorded on December 7, 1987 in Carnegie Hall during a tribute concert for Harry Chapin on what would have been his 45th birthday. He was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor that night for all his efforts to combat world hunger. Other performers included Bruce Springsteen, Graham Nash and Ritchie Havens. I don't think the CD or DVD are currently available but check eBay. It's worth the search.

  • She is THE female voice of rock!

  • I love the way she talks about 'learning' to sing rock. Having such a great voice, she is so humble. She doesn't have to boast her voice, she is so versatile as a singer. This is a beautiful homage, for sure!

  • I loveeeeeeeeee this song!!

  • Pat Benatar is one of the great voices of popular/rock music. Fantastic!

  • This song is so beautiful, her voice is just ethereal

  • that is one of the most heart felt songs I have ever heard sung. Harry was an excellent lyrisist. Pat did him proud. God Bless Harry Chapin

  • An old comment on this video basically went like this: We were there, they announced Pat Benatar, and we cringed. then she sang this and the crowd was blown away.

She's such a phenomenal talent and yet she gets thrown out with the dishes because she shook her breasts and told men to piss off a lot.

Pat is a goddess and i'm proud to have always known that.

  • you rock!

  • The only words that will give due credit to this video is: Harry would have been VERY proud of you, Pat. Good work!

  • I haven't seen this for so long-- lost on some vhs tape somewhere-- thank you... it brings chills.

  • Great Tribute to HC......... Again Pat shows why she is truly the best of the Best, she's got Class, style, voice, and Neil...lol, she is a total class act she is someone to look up to ! Thanks PAT! and Neil!

  • This is my favorite Pat Benetar song. It's too bad it was never released on the radio.

  • I absolutly adore this song.. I've only hear I absolutely adore this song.. I've only hear Pat's version of Harry's Shooting Star once almost 20 years ago on PBS... It was so great to hear it again. I've always wondered why Pat didn't release this Cover.. I agree with Michaelwilliam it is it pure perfection..

  • Perfection from the first note to the last.

  • Beautiful version of a beautiful song. We miss you Harry.

  • Wow, I can't believe I've been so completely ignorant of this video. Harry couldn't have asked for a better version. As a side note, I don't think I've ever read or heard a cross word said about (or from) the man. And when only a partial lifetime's work is applauded long into the future, it's likely there's something worthwhile in there - like this song. Truly excellent!

  • Interesting. God bless.

  • what a great man he was Pat did a great job on this song thanks for posting it

  • She's so giggly...

"I finally got it!" No way? Really? Pat Benatar, a rocker...lol!

  • Yay! Good job posting! I love this song!

  • They keep pulling this vid off UTube. Becuz tens of dollars are being lost on that commercially-unavailable VHS tape.

  • @youreterriblemuriel LOL! Tens of dollars; well thanks to those VHS converters I'm about to upload it on my Pat Benatar channel after it's on DVD and converting it to HD; then I'll upload it. That way if they go around pulling vids we'll just keep creating channels and popping them up!

  • just a beautiful song.

  • Outstanding! Harry would be proud. We in the cheap seats appreciate this!

  • A life long Chapin Fan. Pat's version stirred my soul. What a gift to the world.

  • WOW!! I have always wanted to see the footage of this song! I've tried to imagine what Pat would be wearing and what she looked like singing this song! THANKS SO MUCH for posting this!! It's something I never thought I'd see! A showcase of Pat's softer beautiful voice!

  • Ilove this song. so much passion thank you Harry. Thank you pat!

  • What a voice!

  • this song is so awsome go pat!!!!!!!!!!!
