I love this version. I'm old enough to remember when it came out. I didnt have the album, but my friend Renita had it. I'd let her borrow an album of mine (Aretha, the Delfonics, Temptations, etc.) and she'd let me borrow an album of hers. It was music like this that got us through those rough civil rights days. Thanks, Mavis. We love you.
You will never find a singer to match the feelins put into this performance of a song. EVER! Mavis broke this one! Plus, the orchestraion is the best! The sad part is they cutt off the orchestraion of this song.

This is the absolute BEST version of this song EVER!!! She feels this song in every fiber and it shows!!!! Mavis Staples is just damn good , anyway. I will say though, not including the ending to her version here does take away some of the magic of her performance. The ending is essential!!! Oh, and never, ever, ever listen to this after a painful and regretable break up!!! Torture!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I must agree with those who believe that this is the best version of them all!! As good as Luther's was it cannot compare with the passion that Mavis sung wth. This needs to be made available to everyone so they can understand what the genre of gospel singing can produce.
my favorite version! actually, I grew up thinking this was the only version as it was played on Sunday nites on WDAS-FM with Harvey Holiday. when Luther's version came out, it took a long time to grow on me. when i heard dionne's version it was just a song. What makes Mavis's version powerful for me, is the raw emotion. You can't capture that in run's like Luther's, it is just pure and simple.
Hey...now to me this is the version!! As much as I love Luther's version I just can't put it above this one. So much passion, so much emotion...and it only took her 4:01 to do it!! Nice, nice post!!!
Damn!

I agree; she sounds like she feels every word, every grunt and moan. None of it seems contrived. But that how Mavis sang, when she was in her prime.
