  • I can't find the approach briefing man. Where is it?

  • For many years, only TAP Portuguese airlines where alowed to land in Madeira.

In 2000, the airport was extended this actual size. Its now easyer.

  • what should we do after doing a missed approach?

  • I have a couple of questions:

1.) I'm guessing you're training to be a real pilot?

2.) How do you determine how much bank to give the plane to make the turns line up with various radials so nicely? Obviously the higher the speed the greater the bank but how do you figure out the turning rates/turning circle of various aircraft or is there some clever way of doing it?

3.) When are you supposed to start lowering the flaps? The way I understand it... as ATC asks you to reduce speeds, you

  • @OriginalAtomicSheep Automatically start lowering the flaps as you reach certain speeds? I feel like I'm right with this one but I never know by which point you're meant to have a fully configured plane for landing i.e. gear down and full flaps? In the video you explained that at MA.05 or whatever it was, you lower the gear, do pre landing checklist etc... but you didn't have full flaps at this stage and your speed was higher... I usually just go by feel... but sometimes I'm either way far out

  • @OriginalAtomicSheep from the airport and at landing speed with full flaps etc thinking hmm that was definitely too early and sometimes I just have to reduce the speed all at once and just lower flaps from about half way to full within probably a mile out or something. Is this plane dependent? Is this stated on the charts somewhere? I can't seem to figure this question out.

4.) Finally, were you flying this manually? If so, how much manual flying is usually the norm? I know most landings are

  • @OriginalAtomicSheep done manually but the autopilots are heard coming off at random times when I watch videos of pilots flying, sometimes they start flying manual from quite a way from the airport... sometimes they turn it off just before touching down and obviously everywhere in between. Any ideas on this question? The autopilot is fine at cruise but once you get into the nitty gritty procedures etc it starts doing stupid stuff - mainly on stock fsx aircraft but yer I prefer to fly manually.

  • @OriginalAtomicSheep but I also prefer to fly as realistically as possible so thats why I ask.

  • Thanks for posting. I didn't manage to land safely yet. I tried 4 times lol. This tutorial helps a lot.

  • @vdbniels

It is a lot harder than it looks, but it will "click" for you soon, thanks for the comment, and keep at it.

  • @FSX404 Awesome! after 2 more tries a perfect landing =) but in my FSX RWY elev is at 770' so I needed some descend-changes for the turn to short final (RWY05). Your vid helped a lot. I fly an A321 in FSX btw. Thnx again. Whoa, this airport is as cool as LOWI (DME west approach, with circling for RWY08) and LSGS. So, 3 extremely cool airports on my list now =)

  • Amazing video & tutorial. Thanks so much!!

Re. the animated lead in approach lights - is this part of the Aerosoft package (I've got it and mine are not animated), or is this an additional add-on? I think PTSIM had an animated lead in approach lights for their Madeira addon, but I don't think it is available for FSX.

I've got to have the animated lead-in lights - they are "the bomb". How do I get them? Thx

  • @averagejoe007226

They came with the software addon, re-install the software, I also think they they only come on at night, but I'm not sure, try flying there at night.

  • Excellent tutorial. Nice app and landing! 5*

  • nice plane nice scenery(is it paywere or in the game?) no lag i like it!

  • @u20047

Thanks, both the plane and scenery are payware, the MD-80 is made by Flight1 and he scenery is made by Aerosoft

  • Seeing the diagram at the end always puts a smile on my face :)

    Great approach

  • hey man i always start my turn n for some reason i dont get to see the lights to continue the approach...do u have any idea why? im always startin my turn at 6DME though...appreciate ur help

  • @FS0071

Two reasons, either your airspeed is way off and you're way too fast, so your plane turns slower and you need more bank, or more likely you don't have the addon scenery. I'm not sure if the default scenery has the lights in which case try to follow the coast as best you can, but following the coast is a lot harder

  • awesume video fsx404

  • @flightsimulatorguy10

    Thank you

  • @FSX404 yea i have an older scenery which does not have the lights i guess...where did u get urs?

  • I have issues flying exact headings. I have difficulty rolling out of a turn into a heading. I'm always about 5 degrees off and I bank a degree or two to correct. After that I have problems getting and keeping at 0 bank. If I need to hold a heading of 205 for 11 miles on approach, in 8 miles or so I will be off to 202, 210, 208, etc. Is there a trick to getting exactly 0 bank, so a 2 degree bank doesn't throw my whole approach off? This is particularly annoying in fast turning planes like a C172

  • @CubesForAKid

This is actually one thing that is harder in real life, the plane always wants to bank a little to one side or the other, one wing has more fuel than the other, and that kind of stuff. Unfortunately there isn't anything you can do except make little adjustments as you go. Either that or engage the autopilot, if you want to take a break a little. But as they say about flying - if you're not doing anything while flying then you are doing something wrong.

  • that was awesome :D

  • Of what heritage are you? i cant really tell where your accent is from. haha

  • Hey. But shouldn't you be at 150-160 knots at the rabbit lightst? You were 200 knots at 50 feet above the runway. Is it ok?

  • @pav2k

I was 160-170 on the approach, 150 after the VOR, 145 over the rabbit lights and 135 on the flare, I think you just read airspeed indicator wrong, LOL, I know it's kind of hard to read on youtube.

    Thanks for the comment :)

  • @FSX404 LOOL I see know.. I've got confused by the mach speed.. Is the instrument the same at the real md-80?

  • @pav2k

Yeah, I have a friend that flies the MD-80 for American Airlines and has seen this MD-80, he always complains that his plane still has these old instruments. As I remind him every time I see him... "DO YOU REALIZE THAT YOU ARE FLYING AN AIRLINER FOR A MAJOR AIRLINE???!!!", he still complains about it anyway, and about flying too much, LOL

  • AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!! Really!!

  • Dang man, I'll fly with you ANY day of the week, anywhere, any weather! You are one amazing pilot!

  • @Flyboy4500

Thanks, anytime you want, just PM me if you're in LA.

  • @FSX404 You should seriously consider to fly an around-the-world-tour to take up all your subscribers to a flight.... :D

  • @immortalisblog

Not a bad idea, except it costs a lot, but if all of us (including myself) put up $200, I could do it, no joke, LOL. I really wish I could fly into all the places of the world, but in that respect I’m as same as most simmers – I can do the next best thing and do it in the simulator :)

  • @FSX404 yeah.... the best thing now is to watch your videos, and try to fly the approaches. :D Anyway, if I win a serious lottery jackpot or something, we'll be re-considering the around-the-world-tour. :D

    Peace.

  • thanks a million, i watched all three videos and found them very helpful

  • Keep the series up, you are awesome. You've taught me a lot about aviation.

  • Good video can't wait for the next one!

  • include TIVAT airport :)

  • @SavaMarkovicPilot

As soon as I'm done with the 10 most extreme list, I will go into other exciting airports. Tivat is one of the first on the list to do after this series, and hopefully I'll get a chance to fly Tivat for real when I visit the Balkans in a few months. I definitely have to film that.

  • in fact it's not dangerous at all, the true, it's a funny and nice approach, but i don't like that island

  • @gustavo87467357

OK Gustavo, I think that every pilot that has flown into Madeira would disagree. The approach is pretty easy (easier than San Diego) until the last part, the last part is very very dangerous, look at the minimums, 1330 feet ceiling and 5 miles visibility. That is higher than VFR standards.

  • @FSX404 well what can i say, nah i know it's dangerous, but we brazilians have some little fight with portuguese people, lol, anyways, if you like challenges, i think you should checkout that one: /watch?v=asZGBEirD9k

anyways nice video, you're always making nice videos, keep up with the 10 M.D.As, see you soon

p.s. i added you at twitter

  • @gustavo87467357

I keep hearing about Brazilian airports from a lot of people, I really have to check them out. Thanks for the twitter add, in a way I should have told everyone about it, I think I'll add a notation about it...
