  • 貴方は60年代末から、ジャズの核心にいた、精力的!デイヴ・ホランドのベース・ソロの見事さ~曲も"Mrポール・チェンバース" #jazzm

  • why are basses with 5 and more strings so unpopular in jazz? most of the bass masters play 4 string basses. but there are also double basses with more than 4 strings.

  • @BearWithDreads Renaud Garcia Fons

  • @BearWithDreads the necks on 5-string basses are just a lot brouder and less fast to play and jazz bassist usually don't need to go so deep when playing solo's or when walking. so they play 4 string basses but it's all your own preference, I would like an extention on my low E but I wouldn't want a five string bass.

  • 2:28 Amazing jazz face. Years of practice there.

  • @hutchthehorsey and not to mention 2:16 LMAO saw him at the Jazz festival in Molde few weeks ago. Regretfully no tickets left for the solo concert the day before, but sheeet! Tight. No particular faces being made, though, that i can remember anyway. You know the term violin eyes? Haha you made my day, bud!

  • 4 regueetoneros que no entienden musica

  • Many bassists are beyond tonal structure in their solos. It's no big deal.

  • BASS CHORDS HOLY SHIT

  • 4 blinds tried to see this video XD

  • @carmine6786 you dont have to use your eyes to be musical. i think you mean 4 people with no ears.

  • @tutten321 i was meaning that 4 people whit a blinded soul tried to see this video...u have to search the philosophical mean of my opinion...in the most of the case

  • This is magnificent. Dave Holland is a wonderful, masterful bassist. What a treasure. I wish he'd do another solo CD a la Emerald Tears, with maybe a few more standards like this one thrown in. Absolutely thru-the-roof magnificent.

  • this is fucking sick

  • by the look on his face this is the worlds most musical shit ever taken

  • very out of tune...

  • @schimmelpenninq Dude, what the ..?

You must have a lousy way of hearing things.

  • @schimmelpenninq many bassists like ron carter are out of tune-- but they're still legends because they have the chops and ears for this type of music.

  • @Trimbler00 Sure because they have great chops, but they're legends because they have soul.

  • also i am totally getting a masterclass from him right now :DD

  • @Btok92 Love it! And I'm uber jealous! :P

the "powerchord" argument is the funniest thing i read this week.

kudos to dave and the poster and also the people leaving comments here.

i also vote this thread in the top10 of youtube,

after seeing so much trash it gives some hope for the future.

  • I listened to Miles Runs the Voodoo down. Wikipedia'd the tracks. Found his name and came here knowing i was in for a treat. With expectations I was still blown away. He makes the bass fuckin SINNNGGG. Is there anyone who can compare with this monster?

  • Потрясающий музыкант.

  • Outstanding as usual. My wife adores his music & so do I. She cant get enough of those low notes I guess; must be a female thing. I saw him at Ronnies with Eric Person & others and several times since in UK, but now with huge audiences. Best Bassman this country has produced.

  • Shame on the 3 that disliked this video

  • Q capo!!!!

  • @doublethumpbass89

i wouldn't know how to start on bassguitar :) (these frets confuse the hell out of me), so respect to bass guitar players as well

  • Irraggiungibile , l´ultimo vero grande della vecchia scuola del contrabbasso jazz suonato come dio comanda...

  • OH CAZZO!!!

  • AMaZinG!!!!!!!!

    You are a GREAT musician!!!

    GOod Ideas on ur solo!

  • Hey guys please check out the cover of this on my channel! I'd like to hear your opinion!

  • WoW! Candela!

  • Man's a rock star. Period

  • amazing timing! kinda reminds me of peacock

  • could someone please tell me what kind of tone this would be classified as? stringy? What?

  • It would be classified as the best tone a double bass player could dream of unless you play gut strings, that is tatally different, but for still string this is it if you like Jazz!

  • jazz strings man, jazz strings !!

  • 1:50 he stole from cold duck time?

  • stole? I'd hardly call quoting "stealing"!

  • @fcmilsweeper9 i guess it would be called quoting

  • @Macbethkid182

I think this is one of the reasons people don't like jazz. They just dont understand it. 99.99999999% of people who aren't jazz musicians wouldn't get that he was 'quoting' (quotes in "'s. wow.) cold duck time.

  • double bass is better than bass, and is more difficult to play, so I chose the double bass. Dave Holland at the moment is one of the best.

  • As a Double Bassist that triples on Electric Bass Guitar, Baritone Sax and MiniMoog Bass - each of these tools controls the foundation of time and space in their own equally important ways. In the many different genres of Music, there is always room for one of these tools...so my young brother...NEVER close your mind or become opinionated to what instrument is, or is not better or more difficult. The only way to understand the depth of the pool is to jump in! Try them all! Then we'll talk!

  • Yes! Never, never, never become opinionated!!! People who are opinionated are idiots and deserved to be killed!!!! Just like those stupid hypocrites!!!

  • @doublealufwaffe you realize of course that you just became opinionated by making that statement right?

Awesome playing on this video, his is a level we can all aspire too

  • @PlagueInfestedCheese, you are an imbecile!

  • @withstrings

    Well sed:)

  • holy fuck

    wow

  • at 1:15 and 1:16 is he doing chromatic decending major thirds starting on the third

  • minor* thirds

  • holy crap!

  • jesus

  • fuckin amazing

  • chords need a root. you can substitute a chord with some other roots like Db for G if going to C. you only need guide tones on dominants to have the quality mean something in a progression but that's still considered different chord same progression. if Cmaj7 is is played on bass with E on I-vi-ii-V progression, then Imaj7 is substituted by iii- which is E- iii-vi-ii-V is just as common as Imaj7. and power chord is a chord. chord that has 3rd and 5th is called tertian chord, a type of chord.

  • you wrote lmaj7, what is that?

  • thats the tonic with a 7 added on. so in e maj, the chord would be E-Ab-B-Eb because thats e maj (e-Ab-B) with the major 7 (Eb)

  • very good!!!

  • Wonderful playing from Wolverhampton's finest!

  • a great bass player.

  • anybody know what make his bass is?

  • thanks guys ,I knew this tune long time already ,I was thinking about Dave played Trane's solo ,coz I sew it from information of this video it says"Dave Holland Playing Mr. PC by John Coltrane Solo"so i thought he played the solo form Trane I checked all of different versions of P.C which Trane played ,I found around 5 or 6 different versions ,I just couldn't figure out form which Trane's album ,that's why asked .Any how I like one of these answers it's C minor blues : )

  • Hi Guys ,Does any body know about this solo form which album of Coltrane? He has a lot different versions

    Thanx

  • The main version from Coltrane was on Giant Steps (1960), hope this helps...

  • This a a C minor blues. The tune is from Coltrane's Giant Steps recording.

  • assolutamente magnifico.

  • DAMN !!! as always his groove is pure perfection

  • GREAT!!

  • YEEEEEEEAHHHHHHHH

  • You're so good, you make me SICK Mr. Holland!

  • i love dave!!!

  • Man I love that bass sound, really clear, you can hear the theme's chords (which can be hard when the bass plays with a really deep sounds, it gets hard to understand which chords he's playing on) and it just sounds nice. Nice vidz

  • I love this guy.

  • Πω ρε συ.

  • Is that just root and fifth on his chord in the head?

  • D-5---3---5

    A-3---1---3

    I think.

  • its root and its 5th then 7th and its 5th going down a tone and back.

  • "This is the jazz police, you are under arrest for using a power chord!" Heh ;)

  • What's a power chord?

  • it's the same as the interval fifth and sometimes the octave on top, rings nicely with distortion so rock guys use is as sort of moveable mini chord

  • It connects an electrical device to a power source.

    LOL!

Truthfully, a power chord, used mainly by rock players, isn't really a chord at all, in that they only contain the root and fifth of a given scale.

True chords must have a 3rd (major or minor), and / or a 7th (whether major, minor or diminished) and / or any altered notes, i.e. 9, b9, #9, b5,#5, etc...

Also, a chord doesn't necessarily need a root or a fifth.

  • A chord is technically any combination of 3 different notes, but what we consider to be "correct" chords are those that must have a root and 3rd, then you can technically add any note to finish it, 5ths and 7ths are the most common. But this is why we have bassist, to hover mostly around roots and 5ths so that chordal instruments can omit those notes and use more interesting notes instead.

  • Why did i get negs? I know many different types of chords, I study jazz and play trombone and bass. I just didn't the rock term for a perfect fifth interval.

  • actually prunespicker, a chord does need a root. if you play a Cmaj7 chord and take out the root, it would be E-G-B, which is no longer a Cmaj7 chord, but an E minor triad. bam in your face

  • It all depends on the context in which it's used. If the progression is Cmaj7 Amin7 Dmin7 G7 and you have played it a few times and omit the root on the Cmaj7 one time through it will not sound like an Emin, but a Cmaj7. This is a jazzy thing to do and wouldn't be done to start a song but would just give you more options to play with. Who the fuck says bam in your face

  • upinthembutts, you must not have read the comment i was replying to because what i was saying was not about playing a progression, which you are right about, it was about chord theory. and i say bam in your face. i am guessing by your screen name that it is men's butts your up in?

  • and another classic comeback!

  • i gotta say, I respect "bam in your face"

  • there are also such things as rootless voicings too. still has the same qualities as the chord, minus the root. not normally used in anything but jazz, but it is used.

  • @prunespicker I'd just like to say there is no such thing as a true chord or an untrue one. A chord is two or more notes played together, so just because it is an atonal chord, does not make it an untrue chord.

  • @alstocko It has been my experience that two notes played together is not a chord, but a harmonic interval.

  • @bertosoleterno ok, look it up in the music dictionary and the cambridge music guide. Two notes played simoultaneously is a chord. Being a musician, you'd think I'd know better than a fifty year old loser sat in front of his PC in his mother's house.

P.S. She's not your mother, you're adopted. so don't be annoyed that I slept with her

  • jaja

  • I agree--the harmony is a little rough. but, he pulls it off because its' a double-stop--not a power chord--when a bass player plays it :-P. Anyway, Trane never pulled any crazy polyphonic shit when he played this tune, so I say kudos to Dave Holland for playing it his way.

  • Oh no, don't get me wrong, I'm totally impressed by Holland, this was great and sounds awesome! Intricate harmonies on the bass alone is not such a good idea, also when done correctly (implying the changes etc) a single voice instrument can produce amazing things -> your head will fill in the rest!

  • @junka22 YEAH!!! ahah lol

  • @junka22 I guess with mr pc it's allowed because it's such a bad ass tune!

  • @junka22 LOL jokes, man, jokes!.. but didn't you know that mr. holland sometimes incorporates rock stuff into his jazz?

  • @junka22 It's okay, Dave Holland is above the law.

  • @junka22 Its not a power chord, the power chord wasnt around when this was written xD

  • @Tubz1990 Neither was Hendrix around when the "Hendrix chord" was written

  • @supahsekzy Thats because its only known as the Hendrix chord by the people uneducated in jazz

  • great great solo, funny tone... where's the bass frequencies? All I hear is quack quack quack

  • agreed. it's got that weird 70's bass sound

  • Its just extra percussion ;) awesome

  • That's the best double base man of this world

  • it's called a double bass

  • HOLLY!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i admire his passion

  • Absolutely amazing

i cant even dream of playing my bass that fast

  • BEAST

  • what a fucking monster

  • WOW i give him upmost respect. he was RRRLLLLYYY into it. i was sssooooo in a jazz trance.

  • Wow! Great stuff! Solo upright is awesome.

  • I absolutely LOVE Dave Holland but his blowing here has a run-on sentence like quality. I just wish he would take a breath...

  • DAVE NUMBER ONE!!!!

  • my brothers jazz band plays this song

  • I play bass, I know how much his fingers hurt.

  • You must not have played enough bass, then. I guarantee you, his fingers don't hurt. Yours won't either if you keep practicing.

This is a really nice clip, and it's nice to see an "a cappella" bass recording like this. Something is weird about his tone, though--it's pretty thin and electricy...I think the Czech-Ease basses are pretty nice, perhaps the problem is in the compression for Youtube?

  • This makes my arm hurt just watching it. Wish the video quality was a little better

  • awesome

  • That's amazing!!! <3 luv it

  • I knew of Dave Holland from playing with Miles Davis. I've seen him on the Bitches Brew Live recording, and I wasn't that impressed by his playing, and couldn't see why he was rated so highly. After watching this, I now know why he is.

  • This is the best song of Coltrane, in my opinion, and Dave's interpretation is simply amazing.

  • He's a monster !

  • WOW!

I listend to every second, one part i like is at 2:42 and then the next 6 seconds or so, when he moves the theme to another tone.

  • Nigga can play bass

  • 1:11-1:14 best! 5*

  • amazing!

  • Fantabulous!

  • effortless

  • Fucking frightening.
