I had the pleasure of owning a few of these beauties. 63 Lincoln, 73 Continentel, 73 fleetwood. I wish I had anyone of them now. Thanks for the memories
@IluvSixtiesPontiacs Thanks for the info. I used to have some 1960s copies of National Geographic with adverts for huge American cars. So cool! Detroit made some great cars.
Great cars! Were they for "everyone" or just the rich?
Those huge cars of the 60's seem to embody an age of American wealth and optimism. Here in the UK the Ford Cortina was the best most families would ever be able to own, and for many more the Austin Mini or Ford Prefect was all they would ever be able to afford...
Of the luxury cars my favorites were the 1967-70 Cadillac's, the 1970 Lincoln Continental's and the 1964-66 Chrysler Imperial's, I also loved the 1969-70 Mercury Marquis's, I definitely agree that this was the peak of the luxury cars as far as performance and elegance
With all the technologies we have today where we can have an Engine sip on gas without losing horsepower we can really have these cars brought back.
I wish American automakers like Cadillac and Lincoln start recognizing that it's best for them to go back to the styling of what made those automakers famous.
My favourites are the 1963 Cadillac, the 1969 Cadillac, the 1966-68 Lincoln Continental, the 1966 and 1967 Imperial. Those were the best looking cars I've ever seen.
@tine214 Yeah? Why does the govt. place such high standards for cars that make it difficult to impossible for manuafcturers to meet? It's no wonder most of the companies are going out of business.
@tine214 Indeed. Why the US - bullshit - govt. insists on getting rid of vintage cars in favour of todays cars is beyond me. I have a great uncle who, at one time, had a 1969 Cadillac. I can't remember whether it was a Sedan DeVille or a Fleetwood, but I remember it was big and beautiful. My oldest cousin had a 1970 or 71 Lincoln Continental. It was the best looking Lincoln Continental I've ever seen or ridden in.
Why would anyone want to sell them as "clunkers" anyway? If properly maintained, and driven safely, then these cars should last you indefinitely and provide good reliable transportation.
@opebo Oh so Obama has nothing to do with this but you can blame right wing politics... blame the assholes who couldn't afford to buy shit but they got credit too!! That would probably be all of us!!
Nice video of the classic luxury cars from its golden era but I thought the 500ci V8 was only used on the 1970-76 Eldorado's and the mid 70s full size Cadillacs.
By far, the scariest and most outlandish was the 1963 Virgil Exner styled Imperial. Last of the great hero-stylist designed cars.
Also interesting is the fact that Exner was replaced at Chrysler (as head designer) by the guy who had designed the Lincioln. Notice the similarity between the boxy redesigned Chryslers (1964 on) and the earlier 1963 Lincioln (which actually had started that look in 1961).
Elwood Engel was Exner's replacement, he was a team player. And so began "committee design"
Chryslers were ugly but the fuselage body with hidden headlights was one bad ass looking tank.

@tine214 I agree. For a vehicle weighing in at over 4,000lbs, I'd put a diesel engine under the hood and run it on veggie oil (biodiesel).

What the devil does Obama have to do with this? Americans can't afford cars like this because of decades of right wing economic policy.
