I seem to remember the really old ones being Sanyo; that's who made the Sears microwave my grandparents had back in the late 1980s. Sears had a pretty big sweetheart deal with Sanyo at the time (most of their TVs and VCRs were Sanyo then too), so it made sense They switched to Whirlpool later (early 1990s, I think).
He is Thom Sharp and I remember him doing many Eckerd and Goodyear commercials plus his guest appearances on "227" and "The Golden Girls" around 1987.

Those 80s microwaves are tanks.
As for safety these old ones probably leaked a lot less RF then the made in china jobs we have today.

Kenmore microwaves back then were from Whirpool which were actually manufactured in South Korea by Samsung and LG and use to last for years.
Nowadays they are made in China, by either Haier or Galanz for Whirpool and relabeled Kenmore., you will be surprise if it last more than 1-year.

People where making jokes about old microwave ovens leaking RF the heavy construction of those vintage units means they are less likely to leak RF.
The ones today probably leak far more microwave energy.
Remember china can't even get dog food right.

Careful with these old microwaves! They let electromagnetic radiation leak which may be harmful!

My parents bought one of these in 1984 (for about $600, I think) and the thing still works to this day. Impressive...most impressive.

We have been using the same microwave oven for the past 22 years. You can easily fit a today's oven in this thing.
