  • @lewdypoo, African has been exploited far more than 50 years my friend!! England, the Portuguese, the Dutch came and built their fortunes on the gold, diamonds, slaves and other natural resources a few hundred years ago (and still do) & Greece and Italy did THOUSANDS of years ago!

  • @TheJazzydrummer African has also been and are exploited by Islam . why you whant to spread only hate towards England, the Portuguese, the Dutch.

And if you use anything that has Coltan in it ALSO YOU HAVE BLOOD IN YOUR HANDS. could it be you are a moslem?

Coltan is used in all mobile phones, Pc, GPS and so on.... Coltan comes from kivu and Kongo has lots of this mineral. millions of African dies due to its value in the more advanced places in the world!!! 6-1300 dollar

    I need Coltan. do you?

  • This was 1987 and Mandela was still in prison, show couldnt be staged in South Africa cuz of the apartheid regime

  • What happened to that LadySmith Black Mambazo member at 00:56??? Did he get a sudden leg cramp or lose his balance???

  • @albertc79 It was probably a signal that they were ready to sing:)

Just my opinion though, what do I know?:(

  • I always enjoyed Paul Simon's African Concert as my favorite! He plays so well with LadySmith Black Mambazo, Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba, and the others!

  • He is a truly great musician and all his songs tell a story. His music goes beyond music to truly live entertainment with song, dance, story, you name it. It goes beyond description. He is truly "GIFTED".

  • Paul Simon has total Karma Bank for his commitment to South African music and musicians.

  • @elimcq I do think this too, thank you, dear:)

    peace from sudan

  • Just....WOW!!!

  • Love it!!

  • 5 STARS *****

  • Hugh songs are real African Jazz, just love listening over and over again.

  • my favourite song.

  • Mugabe's government warned Paul Simon to stay away, that they could not guarantee the behaviour of a mixed race crowd at an open concert. The audience at this landmark concert were better than their government.

  • Awesome!!!!!!!

  • 大変 良い動画です。

    これからも、大切にしたいです。

  • That little jazz lick is the only reason i listen to this! Absolute genius!

  • Hello Mama AFRICA, Empress Jeni /Of Mo'Roots Entertainment

  • oh to have been there!

  • That was Rufaro stadium Harare !

  • Perfect!

  • Hugh plays the Fluglehorn -- but me too

  • you guys speak as if you know -- you know next to nothing of this man Masekela and his struggle to make music in his own Johannesburg South Africa - he wrote anti apartheid music RE pro african pride music -- he was married to Mariam but far more gifted and gutsy! been listening to Hugh since 1965!

  • Disregarding the fact that Africans have been exploited for over 50 years, you should check out Django Reinhardt. A different struggle but a similarly impressive musical background.

  • Catching up to your respond.U'r right sometime

U've to leave your country like so many other

to be free to fight for the cause.I compare to living in the South when Jim Scrow grid lock the south over a hundred yrs.Hugh has to make a living and his gift was music with a lot message.I also been listening to hugh since 1968.!!!

  • @chaserUSA48 i notice this brutha seems to have made an impression in the USA..im 26 yrs old with a soul way too old hence my luv for jazz and im impressed to see someone understand this genius gutsy fella

  • this is music... they sound so great...

  • I remember watching this concert as a kid...I love it and I'm glad I found it so my kids can watch. And I love Hugh Masekela...he was one of the people that made me want to play trumpet. Thanks for posting this

  • looks like fun

  • where can I get lyrics for these two songs?

  • at 2:50 there is guy fighting with his billtong

  • so hunrgy now... xxx

  • "We liberate the people with music" - Bob Marley once said. Indeed Masakela's performance here is a voice of a sufferer who contributed to the liberation of South Africa.

  • beauti...ful!!

  • lovetheconcert

  • what's for dinner?

  • What is the name of the song that plays in the first 3mins?

  • I think its "Township Jive".

  • Thanks

  • Hugh Masakela's opinion song: "Bring back Nelson Mandela, bring him back home to Soweto.

I want to see him walking down the streets of

South Africa - -". Mandela was a political prisoner at the time of this concert.

  • @emtee Township Jive

  • I remember being at this concert in Zim...those were days

  • I was a kid back then but was also in Zim If im correct this concert took place at Rufaro stadium..man those were really the days Zimbabwe was really one of the best places anyone would want to live in but look at it today it's so sad!

  • Masekela rocks! I used to listen to this song all the time!

  • I think it's fairly sad how our scope of music is generally limited to artists we hear about in America and the big names in Europe and how we don't realize just how vast music is in general. Who would ever have heard of Hugh Masekela and all of these other musicians if Paul Simon hadn't publicized it? And they're only 0.00000001% of the actual music out there.

  • With or without Paul Simon, Hugh Masakela& Band are great!!!

Paul Simon should be thankful for having the opportunity to play with them. Instead he ripped them off!

  • He did not rip them off: he mounted this show, and gave them a platform. At personal risk, he went to South Africa with this group.

They are first rate, but it was Simon who

    mounted the show.

  • the show was in zimbabwe actually, ne.

  • seems to me like you know your music,lm always at pains to stress that this one form of exploitation...it should have been a collective name rather than paul simon..seems like he failed to take off own his own

  • you are right, but it is good the musicians got the publicity they might not have gotten otherwise.

  • Simon has my respect for giving that stage and venue to people like Masakela and Makeba. This concert made international stars of Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

  • what platform did this guy offer to an aready established group of talented individuals who wrote, arranged and produced this album..miriam was already a grammy winner

  • you are right.

  • @stimela03

Aside from making the music sound different and pretty? Perhaps nothing. Luckily, for anyone who doesn't miss the point of art, you don't have to have something to offer to perform with a fellow artist. The point is for fun.

If it isn't just for fun well then you can consider that paul simon grabs the attention of a shitload of people who wouldn't listen, or PAY (which seems to be more important to you) normally.

  • Hear, hear!

I can't imagine anyone would question what Hugh Masekela brings to the table. I was really stoked when I bought this DVD and saw he was featured so much throughout the course of the show.

  • be more forgivving. Paul did his best.

  • Hugh had hits in the western world before he worked with Paul Simon. Look up "Grazing in the Grass" on You Tube.

  • Listen to some other stuff. If you like African music, try Oumou Sangare, Bassekou Kouyate, Miriam Makeba, Toumain Diabete.....I agree with what you sadi, but there's plenty out there that you can get your hands on!

  • i think the mixture of blacks and whites in the crowd says it all really!

Happy 90th Birthday Nelson Mandela! may we continue to achieve piece and harmony!

  • As an African I love my people and I am very proud. I also love Paul Simon....Why do you have to make it a racial thing!! Give me a break..there is no division of race when it comes to music..Ignorance really isn't bliss!!!

  • Wish you could have another concert! This must have been fun. I have watched this over and over and I still love it.

  • I wish i was there!!!

  • Education, is the key. Take cotton out ears and put in mouth.

  • @veroden1 You got so much hatred, why dont you kill yourself

  • @brendanmaz Please I got so much hatred? And south africans killing Zimbabwean just because they are migrants is fine. I hate south african behaviour and that will never change till they realise we are all one people. So if stating the truth is having so much hatred then I'm happy.

  • Schmuck!

  • u c thts the whole reason for this music was there any need 4 tht?? just because of the color of his skin already you judging him! he was actually exiled for refusing to stay away from black people and is one of the most influential artists in africa

  • @dhabhawalla You need to grow up

  • amazing. i love this concert.

  • good music from africa, i believe is the best

  • hehe ladysmith black mambazo is so funny in the first 2/3 minutes when the first row of guys come out. Just watch his dancing moves hehehe

  • too bad american culture isn't influenced more by this vibe...especially the rap culture....

  • yes please!!!

  • SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!, If mankind paid more atention to music than bs politics, we'd all be way better off what we need is a 1 world people, (and no i dont mean any means by which genetic purification has been tried b4) not a 1 world government. TIME TO WAKE UP PEOPLE WE ARE ABOUT TO BE ENSLAVED AS A RACE!!!!

  • shit hot, very good indeed.

  • Europe has the best cars , Africa has the best music, that's all

  • every time i see a piece of this concert, i wish i was there a little more

  • yangikhumbuza ekhaya

  • wonderful ca c est l'Afrique le rythme chaud comme le disait l'autre " j'ai le rythme dans le sang comme le jazz et le gospel coulent dans mes veines

  • What is the name of that song sung by Hugh. WOW. Unbelieveable.

  • Cool beans! I was lucky enough to meet Hugh in Capetown in 2002 at the Capetown Jazz festival. What a legend. That was when he was going through his Latin-American phase -- but what gives me kicks is the *real* township stuff like "Uptownship" and this.
