  • WOW!!!!! I really appreciate this!!! My grandfather's brother was the "radiator" on-board the Roma. (radio operator) I have his uniform, and a trench coat with a pair of wings sewn on, his dog-tags, and INSIDE THE COAT POCKET were four tickets to the "Roma Dance" which was held the night before the crash. Since the Roma had a dark-room on-board, I also have a picture that was taken and developed aboard the craft.

  • @radioboywv

My great-great uncle was the official photographer for the Roma. I have his Dance card from the Roma Dance that was held the night before. I would love to see the photograph you have as my great-great uncle (who died in the crash) is likely the person who took it !

  • Hey----------I'm JUST NOW seeing your message. Let me know if you still would like to see his uniform, and picture.

  • The Roma went up in flames, killing most of the crew.

After this the Americans vowed to only use helium in their airships.

  • Very interesting film. Especially the contrast between the rigid R80 and the semi-rigid Roma. The first has a skeleton covered in fabric with gas bags inside, and the second keeps it's shape by gas pressure, but with a stiffening keel.
