heres a good test everyone! I really do hate to see so much hating on youtube.
When i was learning double stroke rolls and diddles, my teacher told me to practice on my mattress. It does have some bounce to it, but it really helps to use your fingers and shows you how much you really need to use them for this roll.
Hey man, this is the best explanation, that I've found, of how to use the bounce for this. Thanks, it's really been bothering me because I couldn't figure out how to practice that..
@JonHcutt if you are so knowledgeable on the subject, why are you watching video lessons? Just curious. Also, your 'constructive' criticism is presented in a very rude way. If you are really awesome, make videos of your own; I will watch them.
@AvengedMillionfold This video was posted on a professional drumming forum for other drummers to make fun of. I came here and posted to hopefully give the man some help, so that he doesn't lose all respect in the community he clearly desires to be a part of. I don't post instructional videos on youtube, because that's how I make money. If you would like to see me play, you can check out my band's videos. Search "Crescent Fresh Band."
Seeing how many negative comments have been received by the people just trying to give him advice on how to sound better, astonishes me. You really think this sounds good? You can't see that his hands do different things? They're not suppose to. As you play slower, you use more of the larger muscles to make the motions happen. As you get faster, you use less finger and more fore arm, which he's doing, but you do NOT create that big of a pocket. His technique will one day damage his body.
That is not the way to do it..The only way you can do this is on very reboundy surfaces like snare or hi-hats..Try that on you low tuned - unbouncy floor tom, then come back and tell me!
ive just started working on my basics after getting a kit after 13 years. i stumbled across this vid by pure chance just wanna say thank you for uploading this the way you broke it down makes it soo much easier to learn thanks dude will be using your vids for to help me!
the point is he is a good drummer and don't need the outfit he will not get the credit or respect he deservers , unless he or you were the outfit. stupid
I noticed that when you're hitting down, your pinky, ring and middle fingers all splay out the side, was just wondering if this is uncommon because i do the same thing and someone told me it wasn't proper, and that it may damage my wrists over time. What so u think man?
@NickCrowther720 it wont damage your wrists. but whoever said that is right, it isnt proper. you should keep your fingers wrapped around the stick, dont hold it too loose so its flooping around but not to tight to where your wrist is all tense. hope that answered your question?
alright i understand! but when i play very slow, then this bounce thing does not work anymore, can i start at this point with using my wrists or have it to be the bounce as well?
how bout featuring R L R LL combination (the last left has a double stroke,at a 16th note, the rest single strokes at 8th notes) and making a catchy beat or fill outta it? appreciate the help...great vids helping me more than ever becoming a great drummer :)
everyone keeps saying this is more like a buzz then double's because its using the rebound of his snare. people also say dont practice this way do the drop catch method. well i do do my double's this same way and it turns out great. however i believe if you want to be good, dont put down this method. learn it, and then once you have mastered it, learn the drop catch method. there are plenty of ways to do everything, but if you learn to do as much as you can you can have options and flexibility!!
I can't even do doubles, but i learnt doing them that way, and pinching them out, but then the second hit is not going to punch as much as the first, and on the toms your rebound is going to be even weaker.
I dropped that method and picked up Dave Weckl's advice on the drop catch, and im trying to learn that one
It's not very clean, his left hand is little quieter than right, just a little, but enough to tell they are different...
If you use all of your fingers you'll have more power in your second strike of double, that's important, and when you go faster you'll get the same sound of every strike...
@2sexy4war It's not clean, especially when it's fast. As he plays faster, he has less control over his diddles, giving them less definition. So that's what is wrong with it. And he's passing information on to young kids, but setting a few bad examples. I get that this video is "easier to understand," but the information in here, is what is keeping this guy at an amateur level. He has the right idea in mind, but he needs to get more educated on the topic before he puts out education videos.

2:00 "That's impossible!" Good video but you are completely wrong about that. There are a lot of drummers out there who can play a single stroke that fast and saying its impossible discourages people from looking into and learning the techniques that would allow them to do so.
no offense, but maybe before teaching people you should learn how to do double strokes yourself, your relying on your drum's bounce, this is why I would only consider lessons from someone with good technique!(I'm a percussion teacher, just my critique! :0
open up your doubles, your not doing buzz rolls! also, a great exercise is to play doubles, then singles, and make them try to sound the same, that's how you know your playing clean!
I don't get why people give "ITELLTHETRUTH123" thumbs down, because he's definitely telling the truth.
Spikey's way of execution the double stroke roll reminds rather of a buzz roll than of a open double stroke roll. The issue is that he doesn't imply his fingers in order to get the second stroke. In addition his right pinky often extends while playing the double stroke roll.
But don't get me wrong! Apart from that Spikey is a really really good drummer having a great rhythmic feel!
Could you do this roll on a non-bounce surface? a proper double stroke roll can be done without bounce. (not being aggressive not being aggressive its a question!!)
before i got my first drumset i got a pair of sticks, and started practicing double stroke rolls on the floor, counter, anything i could hit. after 2 or 3 weeks i could do a drum roll better than most of the drummers i know that have been playing for years.
it definitely helps you build control between both hands, especially your left (assuming you are right handed) where you need it most.
hes playin triplets, R,L,R,L,R,L accent the first right and play the left and second right as ghost notes, then play the second left as an accent ect.. so it would be like this R,l,r,L,r,l. captials are the accents
Hey i need help with my doubles i don't know if im doing them right..... im not getting enough rebound after i get to higher speeds.. someone help me please!!!
Hi i am just starting to try and learn double strokes so this is helping a lot, just one thing do you snap the stick back with your fingers to get the second hit or is that a different type of stroke .

@IAAMDDAFB AGREED Sir. I have been a percussion educator for 13 years now and if I saw any of my students playing this way, I would correct them in a heartbeat. This video is detrimental to a players technique. It promotes bad habits and gives visual of poor examples of how to play double stroke rolls. I'm sure he's fine at the rest of the kit, but as for his double strokes, he needs some serious work.
this is wrong. You start with one stick up force it down til it rebounds up to almost the starting point. then hit with the same hand and use a sticatto note when you hit the head stop it 1" (about) away from the snare. then repeat with your other hand
Dude sorry but its not the right technique of double stroke roll... for a real double stroke u must take the rebond with your fingers to have the same power with your wrist and make an equal double stroke roll
yea, keep your fingers on the back of that stick. don't take them off. we call that sissy playing because it looks like you're holding a tea cup...like a sissy nanny.
Wtf, who are you, Buddy Rich himself? Shut up, nobody is perfect. He's showing the basic's of a double stroke roll and thats more than anough for practising it.
Music is much more important then school. More complexity and your doing something you love. Also, the creation of a dynamicaly sound peice of music is far more interesting and creative, than school.
i notice that that your fingers flair out when doing double strokes. My drum teacher tells me not to do that. it there a reason for it or is he just being stupid
hi. ok ill keep trying. ive a td9 and the display is great for showing you as well as listening as to how even your strokes are.you use the same tech at all speeds tho dont you? ive seen double wrist movements that turn into you wrist/fingers move. seems hard way to do it. its getting the rght energy for the first hit to allow the bounce to be high enough i struggle with. soz for all this/seems stupid when you can do it i suppose. cheers kev
You use the bounce AND your fingers. The initial stroke, you let it bounce back, and the 2nd stroke, you use your fingers. You COULD use the bounce thing for both strokes, but you're going to lose control.
Practicing with rebound and fingers is frustrating as hell, I'll tell you that. I've been drumming for 6 years and I've ignored double stroke rolls because they're so frustrating to learn. I just recently decided I'd start working on them. But yeah. Good luck with it!
cool. i have a prob however. im being told diff ways to do this. is there a better way or just what works? ie. actually flicking wrist twice or as you do or using the fingers for second hit. seems real hard to do the wrist thing. cheers bud
Flicking your wrist twice = 2 single stroke rolls with 1 hand. Not that it's wrong technique or anything. You're just using more energy than you would if you did a DSR. It's hard to let your stick rebound for the first hit and sort of snap your fingers to get that second hit, but practice makes perfect!
I don't know why completely but when you asked what was more important, Music or school, I fell on the floor with laughter. I'm gonna move on to this slide pedal technique because I have trouble with that, see you there...
It's possible to do all the work with the flying fingers:) we miss you videos Josh! I iwas gonna ask for advice but it's too late! :(

Dude sorry but its not the right technique of double stroke roll... for a real double stroke u must take the rebond with your fingers to have the same power with your wrist and make an equal double stroke roll
ToasterCramer 2 years ago
yea, keep your fingers on the back of that stick. don't take them off. we call that sissy playing because it looks like you're holding a tea cup...like a sissy nanny.

he's better than you buddy
Mrevo599 2 years ago
i never said he was bad, did i?
and that's a pretty dull comment, seeing as how you've never seen me play.
and even then we'd most likely be playing two separate styles so you couldn't judge.
and even then, music isn't about competition, it's about music.
ohemgee this comment could be so much longer.
xD

dude. you need to work on your own technique for a long time before you try teaching others. You are very dirty. It almost sounds like a buzz roll.
Seek help.
(also, there is someone that can stroke that fast going R L R L... his name is buddy rich.)
JaredOath 2 years ago
Wtf, who are you, Buddy Rich himself? Shut up, nobody is perfect. He's showing the basic's of a double stroke roll and thats more than anough for practising it.

Erm, I think JaredOath´s comment was removed..what was it that he said?

Music is much more important then school. More complexity and your doing something you love. Also, the creation of a dynamicaly sound peice of music is far more interesting and creative, than school.

i notice that that your fingers flair out when doing double strokes. My drum teacher tells me not to do that. it there a reason for it or is he just being stupid
b111n 2 years ago
No. always keep your fingers on the stick.
He's technically wrong. And the quality of his double stokes suffer from it.
Don't bashing him, but he needs to work on technique.

hi. ok ill keep trying. ive a td9 and the display is great for showing you as well as listening as to how even your strokes are.you use the same tech at all speeds tho dont you? ive seen double wrist movements that turn into you wrist/fingers move. seems hard way to do it. its getting the rght energy for the first hit to allow the bounce to be high enough i struggle with. soz for all this/seems stupid when you can do it i suppose. cheers kev

im confued my music teacher told me to use finger action but its difficult should i continue using the finger action or the bounce thingy
jere0328 2 years ago
You use the bounce AND your fingers. The initial stroke, you let it bounce back, and the 2nd stroke, you use your fingers. You COULD use the bounce thing for both strokes, but you're going to lose control.
Practicing with rebound and fingers is frustrating as hell, I'll tell you that. I've been drumming for 6 years and I've ignored double stroke rolls because they're so frustrating to learn. I just recently decided I'd start working on them. But yeah. Good luck with it!
Munki6 2 years ago
If you also use your fingers, it will sound better. But it's harder ^^
MKiller5 2 years ago
Finger action. Don't rely just on the bounce coz you don't have that much control over it
TheGarandGuy 2 years ago
is there much pressure on your fingers??
(sry for my english, i'm from austria!!! :D)

very good! and cute. xD
darngirl09 2 years ago
cool. i have a prob however. im being told diff ways to do this. is there a better way or just what works? ie. actually flicking wrist twice or as you do or using the fingers for second hit. seems real hard to do the wrist thing. cheers bud
kevinheard 2 years ago
Flicking your wrist twice = 2 single stroke rolls with 1 hand. Not that it's wrong technique or anything. You're just using more energy than you would if you did a DSR. It's hard to let your stick rebound for the first hit and sort of snap your fingers to get that second hit, but practice makes perfect!

I don't know why completely but when you asked what was more important, Music or school, I fell on the floor with laughter. I'm gonna move on to this slide pedal technique because I have trouble with that, see you there...
