It's not very really a premonition since we sent them to Tripoli to fight the Barbary pirates in the beginning of the 19th century. It's from the marine song, which is why it's referencing an event that occured almost a century and a half before this video was made, rather than in its future. Come on, kids, pay attention in your elementary school history classes--we're talking about the Founders here, and everybody loves them! President Jefferson is sad nobody remembers him.
@6funswede . "The line "To the shores of Tripoli" refers to the First Barbary War, and specifically the Battle of Derne in 1805." Wikipedia is hard to use, yo.
@joaormedeiros it's not premonition, they are the words in the Marines' Hymm. We put tripoli in its place during the barbary pirate wars specificaly the battle of Derna which is why we included the line in our Hymm.
@joaormedeiros its not premonition its' a line from the Marines' Hymm. It is a reference for the first time the United States flag was raised in victory over a forgien land. The last time we had to put them in thier place though they were pirates.
@joaormedeiros "the shores of tripoli" is a line from the marines hymn, which in turn is a reference to the first barbary war 1801-05 when the USA planted a flag of victory on foreign soil fo the first time.
shame it wasn't the last.
this information was brought to you by tickle information industries ltd. and was sponsored by wikipedia. :D
@joaormedeiros This is an allusion to the conflict with the Barbary pirates around the year 1800. It is considered one of the most significant early battles for the Marine Corps and is in the first verse of the Marines Hymn; "From the Halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli / We fight our country's battles in the air, on land and sea."
@joaormedeiros It talks about the First Barbary War, the first war that the US fought overseas, where the Marines stormed the fortress of Derna - hence "The shores of Tripoli". So, no premonition, just history.
@joaormedeiros Nope. It's part of the Marines Hymn. "From the Halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli, we will fight for right and freedom, and then to keep out honor clean."

@ruobhad Wow, there is so much ignorance in your comment, that I don't know where to start. First of all, my religion; or lack there of, has no relevance to the way i type, or to your question. @A1l2l2e2n4 Funny, isnt it? How we look back on the 50s and think "hasnt america changed a lot for the worst since then"? This sarcastic song reminds us that an imperial agenda is an imperial agenda. "if you happen to live there..." Thank god I dont. Tho' I did for a while..couldnt wait to scuttle home to Europe.
This brilliant song of Tom Leher's was written in the 1950s or 1960s; remarkable when you look at the recent past and activities of the USA, particularly the war in Iraq in 2003 and Obamas choice to increase troop presence in Afghanistan. Gives me the chills how precient Mr Leher seems to have been with this song.
Well, the Kennedys and LBJ were just as inept in Southeast Asia - at least FDR was smart enough to listen to his SecWar and Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff = George C. Marshall, but he still had some bad habits from his time as SecNav under Woodrow Wilson... Yes, there is a pattern there...
i never understood why people who were against, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, wars blamed the american army or marines or whatever. as they don't decide who they attack their orders come from the president no one else.
do you actually have any idea of what "completely crowded" would be or are you just a high school student who hates being around people so you make up a dumb ideology
I don't like the knee-jerk liberals much, but as a former Marine myself, I know that an Honable Old Marine named Smedley Butler was right about misuse of the "President's Own", to protect Wall Street types whether in the Third World or most shamefully in Hawaii.....
Great statement on U.S. post WWII interventionist sentiment that had repercussions especially in latin america. not that applicable to Bush II's wars in Iraq.
jimjimjimjim1234, cute? Hehe, thanks. Some American patriots have a little trouble with this song. They'll write to the channel. But, yeah, I think it's cute too. Cute and truthful and witty :-)
@Galaktia Tom Lehrer "held great respect for the ..military"? My God, it is true isnt it? Irony does not sit well in the American breast. So I cant let this old untruth about Tom Lehrer sit here on the 'Tube.Tom Lehrer found the military ridiculous. Just give a listen to: "It makes a fellow proud to be a soldier" (oh and Galaktia if youre still listening) the title is ironical That means he doesn really mean it. Geddit?
It's quite clear that what is denounced in this song is the way politicians & their bedmates use the military, not the troops themselves. Some individual soldiers (& Marines & sailors & airmen) may agree with the sentiment "Might makes right......", etc., but they are NOT the ones who decide to go.
the people of Iran dont all hate us, the Radical religious Government of Iran hates us, hell the radical relgious government of Iran hates EVERYBODY that doesnt agree with radical islam. Iran supplies weapons to terrorists who kill innocent civilians and American soldiers....and your gonna stick up for them?! yes we gave weapons to certain groups so they could fend off the soviets during the cold war, and we prevented further spread of communism by doing so. anything else you wanna say?
People get mad when we do "send the Marines" and when we dont they say we dont care.........people want nothing to do with us until there is a crisis, then they call for America to help....and when we do, once the problem is somewhat fixed the world goes back to hating us and calling us fat greedy war mongers...........what a world we live in....full of people who are so unappreciative of all the good that the United States does for the world.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
fuck off! please.....ok lets look at the Middle East.....in Iraq...we toppled a murderous Dictator who killed millions of innocent civilians...and now because of us, they are holding fully functional Democratic elections, and they have a fully functional Democratic Government, now to Afghanistan, we have drastically reduced the Talibans numbers, only recently have they started to make a push back to power..and once we send more troops things will get better, and as for Iran, dont get me started.
Ok, let's look at the Middle East. We couped a democratically elected president in Iran in the 50s and now have a very radical Iran that hates us. We supported Iraq when it suited us, all the way till the 90s. We gave them weapons that were used to kill the many innocent we claimed to go into defend.
We declared war on them (well, we didn't, it was the president that did, not constitutional) for WMDs, none of which have been found.
Our foreign policy has led to us be hated around the world.
US goes to 'help and combat 'terrorism'' and you get the resurgence of the Afgahani production of opium and the US Army is having a helluva time trying to stop it...So the US' 'war' on 'terrorism' obviously isn't supportive of the US' 'war' on 'Drugs'
...You do realize that since the US has 'brought democracy' to Afganistan and Iraq, there has been more issues than when the 'murderous, backwater' regimes (that the US actually helped set up) were in power?
I'll use opium production as an example. The Taliban had actually managed to quash the production of Afgahini opium, limiting the amount of drug heading out of the country and into world drug markets...
the Taliban also forced women to stay inside the house (unless completely carpeted) and forbade them from holding jobs, going to school, and virtually everything else. They even outlawed house windows. Go figure.
As for men, not having a beard was a punishable offense, as was playing music
The Taliban were a much bigger problem then opium production.
I got a new (albeit cheap self built) computer and tried playing back this version. It didn't look too good. Add the code &fmt=18 to the page url and reload, or even better: Watch the NEWER version in the video responses. This song used to be fine in 2007, and I don't know what happened, but thank you!
In regards to the article, I find it short sighted. While not all U.S. aggression in the world has been for the noblest means, e.g. much of the cold war was setting up a buffer against Russia.
but when a dictator in no name country A starts gassing its people, everyone gets upset that no one does anything and then proceed to get upset when we do 'send in the marines' there is usually much more to american aggression...of course self interest also comes in
Im a brit, and i can see that that article is completely wrong. Almost every single aspect is wrong in every way. im not gonna highlight em all here, but it is a complete twisting if the truth in so many aspects.
U seen intelligent, 6funswede. Reconsider the link. think over all america has done, good& bad.
READ ME: On Sunday November 9th people reported that this video "was no longer available". This is a YouTube screw-up, although if you use an old browser, you can also have problems. None of the Lehrer videos have been removed. Try to add "&fmt=18" to the url to change the playback quality of the video. Please report further problems to me via the channel front page. Thanks. 6funswede.
Haha, Tom Lehrer is the best comedy song writer! I love how people are talking about Commies and Barack Hussein and the Communist News Network, I mean CNN. Anyway, Tom Lehrer is the BEST!
I agree we should send the marines (or some other form of armed forces) into countries that pose a threat to us. but random countries like iraq and vietnam? no thank you, bring your pleas for guns to somebody else. and yes. a lot of countries that we "invade" often ask us for help, and I think we should save our troops for real threats. after all, we couldn't help Georgia for two reasons. we had no credibility (we where exactly like the russians), and we had no troops, both because of iraq.
I love this song -laughs- It is so truthful, and that in its own is so sad...As the saying goes...Support the troops...But not neccessarily their cause or actions
He's not actually supporting them you realise. It's a satrical attack on those who try to cover up the fact of America's (and other countries, though Lehrer himself was american hence the marines specifically) interventional violence.
One major problem with pulling the troops out at this very moment(I have family in the marines) is that they don't want to have to call it a defeat. The troops themselves after coming into this war don't want to loose they want a conclusion to it.
Not that we have the money to be in a war right now anyway though............
McCain/Palin's an example of *not* learning through history. Palin probably ditched history class to shop and she's a racist c***. When McCain was in school, there *was* no history class.
You're saying that just because you are running against a black (correction, halfbreed) you are racist? You must be one of those nuts that think that an election should be given to Obama out of affirmative action. What's wrong, you don't think that a darkie (again, halfie) can win an election on his own? Racist bastard.
First off, anyone who says darkie, halfie or halfbreed comments is racist, dcbell. Second, I'm not saying affirmative action. I sure as hell won't vote for a rapper. I'm saying qualification and change. I'd have voted or Hillary had she made it. Stop watching Fox news and you'll realize he raised money WITHOUT corporate help. Why? Because Americans WANT change! Your friend McCain voted with Bush 90% of the time.
Senator Barack Obama IS the obvious choice for anyone who can imagine their own future. And every country I know of, in Europe and elsewhere, also want a change in Amercian foreign policies and attitude. Give us four more "Bush-years" with McCain, and you Americans will loose your position on the international scene. To every Scandinavian, this issue about skin color is impossible to understand. I would wote for Obama, even if his skin was yellow, green, fluorescent, orange or white.
Thankfully, sir (or ma'am). You are Swedish and Europeans can't vote in Presidential elections. However, if I were Swedish (or anyhwere East of the R. Elbe), I would prefer someone who has a record of standing up to Russian aggression. As opposed to equivocalizing or weakness... (Like Obama, Kerry or GWB). Ask the Georgians!
a move over to communism is a change, but do we want that? The german people chanted change when they elected Hitler, the Russians chanted the same slogan when they called for Lenin.
oh my liberal friend, its dangerous to shout change like some popular punch line without knowing why or what.
yeah and mcCain never made a trip out to a military hospital in germany then decided not to visit the troops because there were no cameras allowed in the hospital. Just goes to show what a fucking fake obama is. Only doing good when the camera is rolling. But if no one will see it, fuck the wounded troops right?
Yeah, because McNasty campaigned only in east bum**** America because he thought Germany was still divided. And last I checked, going abroad and EXPANDING HORIZONS was a lot better than referring to people as "****ing Eskimos."
Anyway, retard, Obama won. So suck it. Assuming you're not already.
lol, I am actually looking forward to these next 4 years because now you fucking libs have no one else to blame for the bad shit thats been happening. Now we'll see if your messiah boy can deliver. I am going to enjoy watching you piss and moan as the dems drag this country down in flames. It will be entertaining

I love the fact that some people take offence at this, and yet Tom Lehrer himself was in the military, and held great respect for it.
I think they find it hard to differenciate between satire and agressive denunciation of an organisation.
Galaktia 2 years ago 2
@Galaktia Tom Lehrer "held great respect for the ..military"? My God, it is true isnt it? Irony does not sit well in the American breast. So I cant let this old untruth about Tom Lehrer sit here on the 'Tube.Tom Lehrer found the military ridiculous. Just give a listen to: "It makes a fellow proud to be a soldier" (oh and Galaktia if youre still listening) the title is ironical That means he doesn really mean it. Geddit?
CobinRain 1 year ago

People get mad when we do "send the Marines" and when we dont they say we dont care.........people want nothing to do with us until there is a crisis, then they call for America to help....and when we do, once the problem is somewhat fixed the world goes back to hating us and calling us fat greedy war mongers...........what a world we live in....full of people who are so unappreciative of all the good that the United States does for the world.

fuck off! please.....ok lets look at the Middle East.....in Iraq...we toppled a murderous Dictator who killed millions of innocent civilians...and now because of us, they are holding fully functional Democratic elections, and they have a fully functional Democratic Government, now to Afghanistan, we have drastically reduced the Talibans numbers, only recently have they started to make a push back to power..and once we send more troops things will get better, and as for Iran, dont get me started.
semperfijoe92 2 years ago
Ok, let's look at the Middle East. We couped a democratically elected president in Iran in the 50s and now have a very radical Iran that hates us. We supported Iraq when it suited us, all the way till the 90s. We gave them weapons that were used to kill the many innocent we claimed to go into defend.
We declared war on them (well, we didn't, it was the president that did, not constitutional) for WMDs, none of which have been found.
Our foreign policy has led to us be hated around the world.
theblackout27 2 years ago 4
((Not aimed at you, but @ seperfijoe92))
US goes to 'help and combat 'terrorism'' and you get the resurgence of the Afgahani production of opium and the US Army is having a helluva time trying to stop it...So the US' 'war' on 'terrorism' obviously isn't supportive of the US' 'war' on 'Drugs'
Just think about it.

...You do realize that since the US has 'brought democracy' to Afganistan and Iraq, there has been more issues than when the 'murderous, backwater' regimes (that the US actually helped set up) were in power?
I'll use opium production as an example. The Taliban had actually managed to quash the production of Afgahini opium, limiting the amount of drug heading out of the country and into world drug markets...
DresdenStarwing 2 years ago
the Taliban also forced women to stay inside the house (unless completely carpeted) and forbade them from holding jobs, going to school, and virtually everything else. They even outlawed house windows. Go figure.
As for men, not having a beard was a punishable offense, as was playing music
The Taliban were a much bigger problem then opium production.

I enjoy Tom Leher he's fantastic.

He's not actually supporting them you realise. It's a satrical attack on those who try to cover up the fact of America's (and other countries, though Lehrer himself was american hence the marines specifically) interventional violence.
Malerbron 3 years ago
One major problem with pulling the troops out at this very moment(I have family in the marines) is that they don't want to have to call it a defeat. The troops themselves after coming into this war don't want to loose they want a conclusion to it.
Not that we have the money to be in a war right now anyway though............

Go McCain/Palin '08!
dcbell92 3 years ago
McCain/Palin's an example of *not* learning through history. Palin probably ditched history class to shop and she's a racist c***. When McCain was in school, there *was* no history class.
A lot of people barely even know Black History.
BellaChloe3 3 years ago
You're saying that just because you are running against a black (correction, halfbreed) you are racist? You must be one of those nuts that think that an election should be given to Obama out of affirmative action. What's wrong, you don't think that a darkie (again, halfie) can win an election on his own? Racist bastard.
dcbell92 3 years ago
First off, anyone who says darkie, halfie or halfbreed comments is racist, dcbell. Second, I'm not saying affirmative action. I sure as hell won't vote for a rapper. I'm saying qualification and change. I'd have voted or Hillary had she made it. Stop watching Fox news and you'll realize he raised money WITHOUT corporate help. Why? Because Americans WANT change! Your friend McCain voted with Bush 90% of the time.
BellaChloe3 3 years ago 2

The german people chanted change when they elected Hitler, the Russians chanted the same slogan when they called for Lenin.
oh my liberal friend, its dangerous to shout change like some popular punch line without knowing why or what.
beware what you wish for.

yeah and mcCain never made a trip out to a military hospital in germany then decided not to visit the troops because there were no cameras allowed in the hospital. Just goes to show what a fucking fake obama is. Only doing good when the camera is rolling. But if no one will see it, fuck the wounded troops right?
Alexn1067 3 years ago
Yeah, because McNasty campaigned only in east bum**** America because he thought Germany was still divided. And last I checked, going abroad and EXPANDING HORIZONS was a lot better than referring to people as "****ing Eskimos."
Anyway, retard, Obama won. So suck it. Assuming you're not already.
