I would think one would do it because the coffee itself in the nespresso pods is quite bad. This way you can get better tasting coffee. Then again, I myself just go with drip since it better than anything that will come out of a nespresso machine.
PODS are expensive: 0,3Euro per POD divided by 5 grams coffee content equals 66 Euro / kg - beans are between 7 and 20 Euro / kg.
If in your household you drink more than 4 coffees per day FORGET Nespresso, Dolce Gusto, Lavazza and any form of PODS.
Just buy a auto-espresso machine with grinder costing between 300 and 600 Euro. If you drink 0,5kg coffee per month, you will save (66-10)/2= 28 Euro each month, 336 Euro per year so you pay your machine in 1/2 years - after will be money for you
I love Nespresso coffee - the cost is not important.
However Nespresso UK changed from FEDEX to "YODEL" for deliveries. Just google YODEL and Amazon you'll see why I'm pissed!
I'm trying NE-CAP's now - the French seem to like them. If that doesn't work the old Krups is getting repaired and the Nespresso unit goes in the trash!
To bad...Nespresso does have a good product but chasing deliveries is something I have no time for. I am a busy addict and the dealer has f'd up big!
i just got my nespresso d290 ... i gotta be honest ... the capsules is way too expensive it cost almost 1 dollar each... for that i think i 'll go to starbucks !!!!
WOW. you mean with several minutes fucking about, some pre-bought coffee and a sheet of tinfoil and I can save like 40c??? Id keep this quiet, Nespresso may hunt you down. Twerp!
First and foremost, you can use the coffe you LIKE, not whatever crap they sell prepacked.
Second, premade capsules are much more convinient than having to deal with classical manual espresso machine at 7am in the morning.
Third, *good* automatic espresso makers (the ones that can maintain proper pressure through entire brewing cycle) start from 3000$. Compare that with nespresso machine and draw your conclusions.
The point of a nespresso machine or any other capsule coffee system (e.g. dolce gusto, etc) is to simplify the production of a quality coffee.
Why would someone buy a nespresso machine, and then reuse & refill the capsules? If you really wanted to save money just buy a normal machine and use the crap that you filled your resued capsules with!
@cafenation: at first I thought this was just a joke, but you really did test this I suppose. Of course you should not do this with your brand new nespresso machine, but it sure answer the Cloony question: "What else.." ;o)
@zib3 What's sad about it? I think it's a great idea. Simple, and you can use your own coffee. I see no way how this could possibly harm the machine. The only issue I can think of is the hole where the water is injected will begin to widen after it's used many times...and the water might spill out some on the top.. but anyhow. Bravo to the guy who did and filmed this!! I'm looking forward to re-using my capsules.
3. I don't know. We fixed it quickly. A friend of mine had the same. Someone never had any damage.
4. Good question. Most honestly I never did it again. I'm a professional coffee man and have dozens of machines and hundreds of kilo's of coffee a week.
I just wanted to play around and show people an opportunity to save money.
Can I ask how you fixed the machine? I have a m100 also by magimix (manual) and I used this (with a really nice french roast grind as it was all I had) once to try for fun. My machine is new but no warranty coverage as I bought in a different country. So far after using this once, I'm back on normal nespresso capsules and I wasn't sure if sometimes the water flow is not as big as before. But it's still making really good espresso with the normal nespresso capsules.
thanks caffenation... i can't believe the negative criticism re. this trick.
this allows you to use freshly ground coffee of your own choosing, and if you knew what you were doing - to your own blending preference (i would imagine).
i love the nespresso blends-- but the whole monopoly/patenting crap and consider the wastage... its beyond greed on Nestle's part.
this is waaaaaayyy too much water for an espresso...it's short..like just a sip..not a full cup ;)

surely the point of a nespresso machine is pods that are CONVENIENT, and easy to use? Not tricky, dangerous (for your machine) and a waste of time.

As long as Nespresso don't offer top brews (Puerto Rican, Colombian, Jamaican) we are forced to refill some capsules with "Café Alto Grande".

Nice - and it cuts down on non-recyclable waste, which would otherwise just to the incinerator - or worse still - the landfill

You cannot really 'damage' the machine this way.
Pros:
First and foremost, you can use the coffe you LIKE, not whatever crap they sell prepacked.
Second, premade capsules are much more convinient than having to deal with classical manual espresso machine at 7am in the morning.
Third, *good* automatic espresso makers (the ones that can maintain proper pressure through entire brewing cycle) start from 3000$. Compare that with nespresso machine and draw your conclusions.

willzville1988 2 years ago
there can be different reasons to do that.
for example someone buys that machine and after a year he sees: "oh man, this shit costs me with time more than 2 machines"
and then he starts refilling it, untill he gets the money together to buy another one.
or someone wants only to have on mornings a simple, fast coffee.
so he refills around 10 capsules at evening and makes the coffee at morning at the simple, fast way.
and so on....

I have a Nespresso.. at $0.70 a capsule, I would not bother... BUT... should the capsules one day become unavailable, this becomes a viable option.
dalconhobbies 2 years ago
what is the point in doing that.. all the effort of re-fill and damage to the machine is more expensive than a new capsule...

Couple of questions:
1. How does this damage the machine?
2. What kind of damage are we talking about?
3. How likely is the damage?
4. How can the possibility of damage be minimized?

1. and 2. It jams the machine.

why not using the normal capsules? they're great, easier to use and not very expensive either.

GREAT IDEA!!
1- Why should I buy Always from Nestle, the Giant??
2- More Ecological !! No waist!
3- There are must better Coffes in the WORLD! Timor, Arabia, Brazil etc. You could mix them at the coffe store. MUCH BETTER then Nespresso Crap.
4- Take advantage of the Low Price/Cool Design Nespresso machines.
