i've never excused andrea yates of her crime. but, i'm amazed nothing horrible had happened earlier. she was undiagnosed schizophrenic, was raising and home schooling 5 kids. he husband refused to let her get her tubes tied, or take meds. the doc's begged them not to let her get pregnant, she had just spent 2 years also taking care of her dying father. this poor woman was begging for help, and noone noticed. it took 5 precious babies to die, before anyone noticed.

watching this just breaks my heart, 5 beautiful children gone forever. I agree with most of the post here, she should never have been left alone with the children. As far as the father goes, I'm sure he's hurting, but if he knew his wife was mentaly unstable, why did he leave his children alone with her, and not wait untill help arrived before he left for work? I would have been late for work untill help arrived, before I left the children with her. Children are more important than any job.
This story is so sad. Poor kids. The oldest one would be 16 years old now. It sounds like the mother was mentally ill, but this whole thing could have been prevented. I heard that her doctor said that her and her husband shouldn't have any more children due to her illness, but they did anyway. And I would NEVER leave my kids alone with their mother every day while I worked if she had postpartum depression.
okay.when i was born,my mom was diagnosed with postpartum depression.she often said she wanted to hurt me.she was on the brink of putting me up for adoption.she was 20 when she had me.but she never layed a finger on me.not once.if this lady was diagnosed with postpartum depression,maybe she shouldnt have had that many children.maybe she should have put them up for adoption.but she didnt.she let the depression get the best of here.and she has to live with that guilt hung above her head.everyday

Personally I can't understand how you could hurt a kid, let alone 5 of your own, but then again, I've never suffered a postpartum depression. There are more bad cases known in which women hurt their own children due to that error in hormones and brain. I don't believe she's a monster or that she planned all this to happen, however, I do believe she's severely ill and that she can never live in freedom again. If she really suffered from psychoses for years, she will probably always be dangerous.

I think that people need to be more educated on postpartum depression, and mothers (especially new ones) need to be informed of the outlets available to them by their doctors. I did a psychology research paper on postpartum depression (as i suffered from this too), and was astounded with the info that I found. I too don't think Andrea is a monster. She was suffering, and she will have to live with this for the rest of her life.

In fact they were told by Andrea's shrink that it would not be in their best interest to have more children, but Rusty boy didn't listen. Mary was born on November 30, 2000. And with the miscarriage of the sixth child shortly after Mary's birth Andrea sank into depression again. Then when her father died it got worse. By June of 2001 Andrea was a ghost, she couldn't take care of herself or the children.
The father should have listened, because making her pregnant constantly wasn't going to help anyone. That's just horrible especially if a shrink told him it wouldn't be good to have more kids!!
