Australia was built on immigration, let it continue to be. If you want to persecute people, persecute the Poms, Yanks, Europeans and Chinese who come over here on a visa and overstay their visit.
And for the boat people, these people physically CAN'T come here legally, unlike Western nations and there can be room set aside for these people in Australia. Not uncontrolled open borders, but moderate refugee programs. It's a centralist idea, but people are too extreme, never a sensible middle.

@Turfman631 The recent change to that practice, and I mean RECENT, is for mothers with children. They're placed in a detention centre with lesser security, and allowed day trips once every few months, however they're still as good as prisoners with or without metal bars.
