It would've disgraceful if Cape Blanco hadn't won the Eclipse Award for 2011 Champion Older Turf Male, IMO. Just figure the mileage alone sometime involved in enduring cross-Atlantic shipping's between Ireland and America for 3 G1 races, and the miles alone should have been enough to zap Cape Blanco. If he'd even run just competitive races would've been remarkable. But to endure the thousands of miles and still win the G1 Man O' War, Arlington Million, and Joe Hirsch, at 10 and 12f, Incredible!!
Heard Cape Blanco is possibly heading south to Australia for the Cox Plate. I hope he would stay in North America, and win the BC Turf, along with American Turf Champion Award, Older Horse Award, and HOTY Not bad for the Irish bred outta the GREAT Sire Galileo, who's outta the Great GREAT Sire Sadler's Wells, whose outta the GREATEST Sire.....Northern Dancer. Thank you Nearco, all the way to Phalaris.
Twice Over just won the Juddmonte International in impressive fashion - another G1 to add to his two Champion Stakes and Coral-Eclipse. Cape Blanco crushed this horse at the Irish Champion Stakes last year. Anyone who has been doubting CB's status as one of the best middle distance runners in the world, shouldn't do so anymore. Great win by Twice Over to beat out the two favorites, Midday and Await The Dawn.
@rcschumann - Well Said. Although So You Think, and Workforce might have something to say about that. Where do you see Twice Over racing ...The Breeder's Cup Turf, or the Arc?. As for Midday I see the Filly And Mare Turf vs Stacelita. Twice over has to decide whether to go to Paris and Face SYT, workforce, and possibly Galikova, or go to Kentucky, and face Cape Blanco, Gio Ponti, Acclamation. With Treasure Beach,Seville, and Zoffany heading to the Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamp.
@TicinoParadise Twice Over ran a decent race at the 09 Classic on synthetic, coming in third behind Zenyatta and Gio Ponti. That was his favored distance, and the surface has a somewhat similar feel to turf. Both the BC Turf and Arc would take him out of his comfort zone distance wise, but on his day he's as tough as they come - I think the faster CD course would suit him better than the Arc, as well as the oval format. Looking forward to the ICS - can Frankie take out SYT again?
@rcschumann, Agree with your comments about Twice Over. Ran a very respectable race in the 09' BC Classic behind Zenyatta and Gio Ponti, and he ran well again on a synthetic surface in Dubai in 2011 when he won the G2 Al Maktoum Challenge Rd. 3. The major prep race at the Carnival for the Dubai World Cup. He hasn't, however, run well at all in 2 DWC attempts. He's never raced beyond 10f, and I couldn't see him handling the Arc, either? That race is tough on horses who regularly run 12f, IMO.
@rcschumann, I also wanted to say and ran out of room that I very much agree with you that on his day, at 10f, Twice Over is as tough as they come. And he's got two G1 Champion Stakes wins, one G1 Coral-Eclipse win, and one G1 Juddmonte International Stakes win to his credit that proves just that. At this late stage in his career, if they've not already decided to retire him, I doubt we'll ever see him race at 12f? But much agreed his chances in the BC Turf would be a lot better than in the Arc.
@rcschumann Just watched General Assemblys Travers stakes win. He was a supurb looking horse. And your right he looks alot like Cape Blanco. Probably had abit more class but very similar in the way they galloped and looked. And i also think Await The Dawn will win the Juddmonte International he will have to much class for the rest of field.
@84danzig Well if what your saying is true how come Cape Blanco was able to defeat Workforce last year.? The 2010 Derby and Arc winner. And also Rip Van Winkle and Twice Over.?
look no offence but cape blanco aint nothing special.....come on, i mean its american turf racing...its a bit like a top nfl team playing some second rate kids team,,,,no contest basically...fact of the matter is cape blancos gone globetrotting advertising coolmore blood... if he was all that good he'd be in ireland/england/ france winning proper races...i mean aiden sent mount nelson to run a close 2nd in this a few years back... you actually couldnt give away stallion nominations to that one
Thanks for adding to my point! "GP doesnt have the legs he use to". Exactly, then have him closer to the lead and hit the gas sooner. He closes everytime like a machine. But hes to far behind to win. Its time to change the way he is ridden. It has been proven in the last three races of his.
I don't get it gio has been held back in all races against cape. Its a joke and its far better than that. Cape has a new investor but gio is a breeders cup winner and cape may not show up for other commitments?
This race was as impressive as Cape Blanco's looked since he ran Rip Van Winkle and Twice Over completely off of their feet at Leopardstown in last year's G1 Irish Champion Stakes, IMO. Cape Blanco gets the automatic "win and your in" slot into this year's B.C. Turf with this win. And unlike last year's Million winner, Debussy, Cape Blanco can actually stay 12f. As he showed when he won the 2010 Irish Derby at the Curragh, and when he finished 2nd at Ascot in the 2010 King George.
@GBeret83 Your Absolutely right both comments! I have to admit though my money was on Gio Ponti. I thought he was gonna win to be fair. I take nothing at all away from Cape Blanco he is just so damn good. I have to question the way Gio Ponti was ridden though? Ok hes not as young as he used to be. But when I saw how well he looked before the race I thought he was gonna win by about 1 lenth but I was wrong, had CB to come 2nd, Wish I had done a reverse forcast now that was so close LMAO
@rcschumann My apologies, SYT would of annihilated this field. No your right it would of been close. Cape Blanco is a supurb middle distance horse. With an immaculate pedigree with the Mighty Secretariat on the Dams side. If you like Cape Blanco's pedigree check out Await The Dawns pedigree. Supurb also.
@SoulSurvivor79 Thanks for your response. I checked out Await The Dawn's pedigree - impressive indeed! I saw one of his races but never looked at his bloodline. His sire is the great 1 1/4 mile titan, Giant's Causeway, which of course means he represents Secretariat, and he's got Northern Dancer on both dam and sire's side. He may well win the Juddmonte on Wednesday, in his first G1 race. I watched Secretariat's son, General Assembly, again at the Travers. Cape Blanco resembles him so much!
Dude, this is the third race in a row where Dominguez has blown the ride of Gio Ponti, he got to far behind in the previous two and hit the gas to late. Now he gets stuck on the inside with no room to run. Time to change riders.
@wwflops55 Dominguez was Gio Ponti's jockey when he was winning multiple G1 races the last couple of years, including the MOW Stakes, Arlington Million, Manhattan Handicap and others - was he giving him a bad ride then? GP goes "far behind" now because he doesn't have the legs he had as a 4 and 5 yr old. He's still a good horse, but certainly below his peak. Did you watch Dominguez aboard Stacelita at the Beverly D., on the same card? This jockey is one of the best.
@rcschumann Concidering the way Geo Ponti was ridden, that was more impressive then it looked. Remember Cape Blanco is damn good horse. If GP was rode a bit closer to the pace up front there he might of finished closer, he used and enormous mount of energy to soon to recover his position he just flattend out at the finnish a little bit as a result.. My money was on Gio Ponti I thought he was gonna win but CB was just to good on the day! Agree with your comments there.
get in the cape blanco! .. iv got to say though .. is it me or does anyone else think the same? iv noticed with gio ponti they dont give him the best of rides? i think if they had the likes of an GB jockey in him he wud do far better .. doesent get pushed enough when asked and gets left too late.. an i know he gets put at the back because of needing to settle but has anyone ever seen him run a race differently? i wouldnt say so .. i think its a far better horse than results show ..
@oiuslag12 He WAS a "better horse" at 4 and 5 when he was winning G1 races all over the place - check out his results. Gio Ponti is 6 now, and most horses don't perform as well past the age of 5. He won the G1 Manhattan the last two years, but could only manage 3rd this year, beaten by Mission Approved...you know, the horse who finished 7th in this race.
Hes such a consistent horse that you wonder why he just throws in the odd bad run.I think the horse will continue in the usa as obrien has loads of other horses for his distance in europe with so you think and the likes.I would imagine he will stand at coolmores american stud and with treasure beach winning also obrien is on a roll before york.Treasure beachs run suggests that seville must be a fast improving horse and he could be along with await the dawn obriens two best end of season horses.
@SoulSurvivor79 I don't think SYT would have "annihilated" this field. It would have been a close race for sure. Cape Blanco is a good strong horse with a stellar pedigree, and he was absolutely devastating at the Irish Champion Stakes. If you're interested, check his great grandsire on his dam's side, General Assembly, at the Travers Stakes '79 (2:00 flat on the slop, still unbeaten) - CB's Champion Stakes is almost a carbon copy of that race, and they look and run so much alike, it's eerie!
Sitting with a handfull of horse in a sweet position. Should of course have went with Cape Blanco when Spencer made his move on the bend. Instead, her inactivity caused her to be boxed in with no clear run until the final 200 yds when Wigmore flew home.
Gio Ponti was well beaten again. Three times hes met Cape Blanco and three times hes seen his arse. Great advert for European racing with Stacelita winning on the card aswell. Hope Cape Blanco goes for the Cox Plate now....
@ASupremeOwl Like I mentioned to the other person, 6 yr old Gio Ponti is on the decline. A prime example is his performance in the G1 Manhanttan H. - the last two years he killed at that race, but this year he came in third, and Cape Blanco was no where to be seen. Most horses usually peak at 4, maintain that form at 5, and begin the decline at 6. Of course some horses don't surpass their 3 yr old form. Where was their third meeting? I don't recall.
@rcschumann Meydan in the Dubai World Cup, The Man O'War Stakes at Belmont and here in the Arlington Million. CB comfortably finishing in front of Gio Ponti everytime...
@ASupremeOwl Ah yes, the Dubai World Cup in March - I forgot about that one. Gio Ponti had turned 6 the month before, and as per my previous comment, this fella had already started his decline. Had they met when GP was 4 or 5 and cleaning up at G1 races, he would have won at least two of these encounters - no doubt about it.
Yeah a 3rd rate group 3 horse lost to your 2nd rate horse, our Group 1 horses are miles apart on the turf! Proves it when the failures from the UK head over and clean up your group races. i.e. Cheetah, couldn't win a listed race here, won G3 RD Dick memorial. Fantasia, who did well over here G3 winner has won a G3 and come close in G1's in US. Prime example Cambina, couldn't win a bog standard irish handicap and won your Hollywood Oaks, British turf racing is miles superior at the present time!
@nickdriver08 The oddsmakers didn't seem to think Wigmore Hall was "3rd rate", giving him ridiculously better odds than Derby's Kitten (LOL!). Also, I'd like to see your "failures", or even your best, get starts in major dirt races here - I would love to see how they fare. Maybe you can contact AO for me and ask if he'll send another top 3 yr old to the G1 $1,000,000 Travers Stakes at the end of this month. That would be great, thanks. No wait, that would probably be a bad idea.
Nice run by Cape Blanco. Poor Gio got the door slammed on him coming out of the far turn. Even though he didn't have the greatest trip, he still mustered second...much respect Gio.
Why didnt Hayley kick on with Spencer! She should have followed him. Could have been a second group 1 for her! he was travelling like a bullet at the end. Shes a way better jockey then that! she defently should have finished at least 2nd!
just shows how bad american turf racing is - a few raiders clean up in all 3 races ( plus winchester in saratoga ) really bad. i had a few laughs about people thinking a virginia derby ( lol is that a real race ) could live with a really good european runner. as usual the euros proved best and i made a tidy profit - thank you uncle sam
@naashead Yes, "best" on the GRASS this season, but one of yours still lost to a 2nd rate, 30-1 long shot (lol!) who doesn't compare to the likes of Animal Kingdom, who's also run well on this surface, and to Coil, who won his first G1 on dirt at the Haskell. And 6 yr old Gio Ponti is over the hill and not the same horse he was at 4 and 5, when he was cleaning up at major G1's - horses normally peak at 4. Last year, he killed at the Manhattan H - this year 3rd, and CB wasn't even in that race.
sorry Hayley your a fantastic rider.... but bad day at the office me thinks....wigmore hall finshed like a train as soon as he was in the clear, could have been a lot closer, especially given the charmed trip on the rail.
Boy is Aidan O'Brien and team Ballydoyle really loaded for bear this season!! Ballydoyle is going to have a really strong hand in this year's Breeders Cup, IMO. This was Cape Blanco's fourth G1 win of his career. He won the G1 Irish Derby and the G1 Irish Champion Stakes in Ireland. Then comes to America and win's 2 of the premier G1 turf stakes for older horses over 10f. Plus, he beat Workforce in the G2 Dante Stakes, and won the G3 Tyros Stakes and G2 Futurity Stakes in Ireland as a 2yr.old.
@GBeret83 Ain't that the truth. Balleydoyle must be fairly pleased with the way the season is tracking so far. If you forgive the blip in the Prince of Wales. On another matter Darley resumed their Slipper winner from last season Sepoy yesterday. He looks something out of the hat and could meet Black Caviar in the Patinack Stakes in the spring. There is some absolutely mouth-watering racing coming up.

So pleased Cape Blanco has won another G1. My favourite flat horse. How badly was Hayley caught napping there by the way?
